He was the son of Winthrop P. and Lucy (Akerman) Hoyt and was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Portsmouth, as the Portsmouth Memorial Bridge was being christened. He spent his childhood on the Hoyt farm in Greenland and attended the Greenland School. He went to Portsmouth High, graduating in the class of 1941, and played several sports including football and baseball. He enlisted for active service immediately after graduation. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II, serving in the European theater. He built air strips in Bishop Storford, England, and also had duty in Nancy, France. Following his return to New Hampshire from World War II, he worked for several building contractors as a carpenter and for Simplex. He coached the Lions baseball team in the early '50s and played hockey in the Rye Outdoor Hockey League. He used his last paycheck from the service to buy the baseball glove and hockey skates he used throughout his life with pride. He married Dorothy Vallincour on Sept. 26, 1954, and built the family home on Spinney Road. He worked for Fred J. Brown Construction Company of Greenland for many years and finished his work career with 15 years' service at the University of New Hampshire in the carpenters shop, retiring in 1990. He spent many happy hours at the university's sports events, especially at the hockey arena, where he held season tickets, from the creation of the original Snively Arena and later at the Whittemore Center. He enjoyed helping his daughters' many friends and was a devoted father and grandfather. He served as chaplain of the Greenland Veterans Club, helping to start their scholarship program, and to prepare food baskets. He was an avid ice fisherman on Great Bay. He was an avid and prolific gardener, who helped with community gardening projects throughout the Seacoast. He enjoyed many retirement trips to Florida for baseball spring training in the springtime. He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy, of 46 years; two daughters, Rae Ann Hoyt Chrane and her husband, Scott, of Rochester, and Lianne Hoyt Deal and her husband, Charles, of Medford, Mass.; two granddaughters, Sarah Chrane and Rachel Deal; a brother, Kenard Palfrey of Rye; a sister, Priscilla McLane of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Palfrey of Portsmouth; as well as many nieces, nephews, and warm friends. HOYT - Winthrop Pickering Hoyt Jr., of Portsmouth, died Feb. 12, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Chapel, with Greenland veterans services at 4:45 p.m. on Friday.
