Sherrill PEORIA, Ariz. - Henry Williams Sherrill, 78, a retired Episcopal minister and innovator on the governance of nonprofit institutions, died on March 21, 2001, near Phoenix, Ariz. He suffered a brief illness. Mr. Sherrill was the eldest son of the late Rt. Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill, presiding bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church from 1946 until 1958, and Barbara Harris Sherrill. He served as the first executive officer of the Diocese of Southern Ohio from 1965-69, was a co-founder of Consultation Search, and co-founder of the Cheswick Center in 1971. He served as chairman of the Cheswick Center until his retirement in 1991. Both as a clergyman and consultant, Mr. Sherrill was committed to the service of others. Among the Cheswick Center projects he was involved with were the innovative Board Mentor Program, in conjunction with the Association of Governing Boards and Universities, and the Program for the Public Service Management of Religious Institutions at the General Theological Seminary, Berkeley, Calif. He also consulted with the Menniger Foundation, Topeka, Kansas, the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Cincinnati Medical School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Clorox Company. He served as president of the Good Samaritan Foundation in Wilmington, Del. and on the boards of the Corporation of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; the Center of Effective Philanthropy, Cambridge, Mass.; the Children’s Home, Cincinnati, Ohio; the Slingerland Institute, Seattle, Wash., and the Arizona branch of the International Dyslexia Society, among many others. Born in Boston, Mass. on Nov. 14, 1922, he graduated from Milton Academy and Yale University, class of 1945. He was a member of the Yale Swimming Team. He served in the Army during World War II. He attended Union Theological Seminary and following graduation from the Virginia Theological Seminary, Mr. Sherrill served as assistant minister at Christ Church, Grosse Pointe, Mich., and as rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Martha Sinclair Weeks; three children, Rebecca S. More of Providence, R.I., Barbara H. of Issaquah, Wash., and Henry Sinclair of Cambridge, Mass.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, the Rt. Rev. Edmund K. of Rio de Janiero, Brazil and the Rev. Franklin Goldthwaite of Center Harbor; and a sister, Barbara Prue Wilson of Asheville, N.C. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on April 20 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, Boston.
