Tenney CASCO, Me. - Merle Linwood Tenney, 78, died on March 4, 2001 at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris, Me. He was born in Casco the son of Leroy G. and Myrtie Edes Tenney, and attended local schools. Merle served in the Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart medal. He married Josephine Leavitt on Jan. 11, 1943, in Naples, Me. He worked for the Portland Pipeline for 33 years as a station manager and maintenance superintendent, retiring in 1979. Merle was co-owner of the Sunset Beach Housekeeping Cottages on Long Lake in Naples for many years. For many years he operated a CB radio business from his home in South Casco, Me. and was known by his CB handle as "Uncle Milty" to many friends. Merle was involved in many clubs and organizations in both Maine and New Hampshire. In late 1940s, he served as a selectman for the town of Casco. He was a member and former commander of the Knights of Pythias in Raymond, Me. and a 32nd degree Mason. Merle was a member of the Bektash Temple Shrine in Concord; the Lake Region Shrine Club, the Scottish rites and the North Star Lodge of Lancaster and Littleton. He was a member of the Presumpscot Lodge #127 and Eastern Star Evangeline Chapter, Windham, Me; a chapter member of the Naples-Casco-Raymond American Legion Post #155; a member of the VFW Post 11362 of Naples, Me and the Purple Heart Organization. For many years he was a member of the Swinging Pine Cones Square-Dance Club; the U.S. Horseman’s Association; Crooked River Snowmobile Club and the Pittsburg Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club. Merle enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, golfing, bowling and playing cards. Surviving are his wife of 58 years; his daughter Shelia (Tenney) Gallagher of Lyndonville, Vt.; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Rd., Casco, Me.
