Welch, 82, of Thurlow Street, died April 27, 2001, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. She was born in Lockhaven, Penn., on Oct. 16, 1918, the daughter of Dowe and Eleanor Lowe. Mrs. Welch was a 1936 graduate of State College High School in Pennsylvania. In 1940, she earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and in 1943 she earned her master's in education, both from Penn State University. She was an All-American athlete, life member of Chi Omega Sorority, and a thespian. She was a member of the choir and an accomplished artist and pianist. Mrs. Welch had started her teaching career in Maryland, and in addition had taught in New Jersey. She had spent her last 19 years of teaching at Plymouth Junior High School. She retired in 1981 after 41 years. She had coached Plymouth High School girls’ basketball to three consecutive undefeated seasons, ending as champions, and had served as the director of the Plymouth Parks and Recreation Committee from 1978 to 1981. Mrs. Welch was an outdoor enthusiast and loved to hunt and fish and feed the wild animals at her summer home in Errol. She was a member of the New Hampshire Retired Teachers Association. Her first husband, Van Allen Hartman, died in 1968. The family includes her husband, Raymond E. Welch of Plymouth; a daughter, Lynda Hartman Jablonski of Bedford; a son, Van Michael Hartman of Dover; two stepsons, Robert Welch of Sanbornton, and Stephen Welch of Wentworth; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; several step-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Frost of State College, Penn.
