Simonds WHITEFIELD - Kenneth R. Simonds, 81, of the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, died there on Monday evening, April 16, 2001. Mr. Simonds was born in Waltham, Mass., on May 10, 1919, the son of Raymond H. and Hazel (Spencer) Simonds. Raised in Belmont, Mass., he was a graduate of Williston Academy. In 1942 he entered the Air Force, where he trained to become a pilot. In 1943 he received his wings, and before going off to war married Hope Wheeler on Christmas Eve. At 24 years of age he was commissioned a B-52 bomber, and during World War II was responsible for delivering supplies to allied ground forces and bombing military installations in Germany, including Messerschmitt Aircraft plants in Regensburg, Germany. For his accomplishments he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, and his entire division received a president’s citation. For many years he was the plant manager of Precision Coating Company in Dedham, Mass. He retired to Venice, Fla., and in June of 1999 moved near his family in New Hampshire due to failing health. He was predeceased by his wife, Hope. Family members include his daughter, Deborah A. Dineen of Jefferson; a son, Christopher G. Simonds of Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Barbara LaPlace of Ponce Inlet, Fla.; and three grandchildren. There are no calling hours. Services will have held at the convenience of the family. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, 919 North Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.
