Evans CARROLL - Raymond Willard Evans, 91, of Evans Road, Twin Mountain, died at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield on April 4, 2001, after a short illness. He was born in Hart’s Location, a son of Loring and Hattie (Smith) Evans. He had been a resident of Twin Mountain for the past 68 years. He served with the Army during World War II as a sniper instructor in the 10th Mountain Division. He worked as a bellman at the former Crawford House at the top of Crawford Notch. He received a life membership in the Appalachian Mountain Club, in recognition for his many years of dedication to the care and maintenance of hiking trails in the Crawford Notch area. He was employed at the Twin Mountain Fish Hatchery for 38 years prior to his retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Marie (Conroy) Evans, in 1995. The family includes three sons, Vernon P. Evans of Chester, Gene L. Evans of Whitefish, Mont., and Brian W. Evans of Old Orchard, Maine; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Calling hours at the Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, were Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lyn McIntosh officiating. Burial will be in the St. Margaret Cemetery, Twin Mountain, on May 19. Memorial donations may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club, Crawford Notch Trails, 5 Joy St., Boston, MA 02180.
