"Doc" Hinkley GROVETON - Dr. Robert I. "Doc" Hinkley, 81, died Friday, April 13, 2001 at the Morrison Nursing Home after a brief illness. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Irving A. and Mariette (Drew) Hinkley. He moved to Groveton in 1947 after returning from the military. He grew up in Lancaster and graduated from Lancaster Academy, class of 1937. He received his BS Cum Laude Degree from Bowdoin College in 1941 and played on the Cum Laude football team. He received his MD from Yale Medical School in 1944 and interned at Worcester, Mass. City Hospital from 1944 to 1945. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1947, attaining rank of Captain, Post Surgeon at the Ogden, (Utah) Ordnance Depot. He had a general practice of medicine in Groveton from 1947 to 1982 and retired from medicine in 1984. He was a member of the Week’s Hospital Medical Staff from 1947 to 1984, serving as president of staff for two years. He had served on the Board of Trustees since 1985. He was a member of the N.H. Medical Society and the Coös County Medical Society where he served as president for two years. He was a member of the Judicial Council of NH Medical Society. He was appointed to the NH Milk Sanitation Board by Gov. John King. He served on the rural Health Committee of the NH Medical Society. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was elected charter fellow of A.A.F.P. in 1975. He developed the first Cardiac Care Unit at Weeks Memorial Hospital. He served as the Groveton and Stark health officer for many years. He was a member of the Groveton School Board for nine years and served as Chairman for three years. He was on the building committee for the new high school. He was trustee of the York Educational Foundation from its inception to present. He was the director and past president of the Groveton Foundation for many years. He belonged to the American Legion, Post #17, Groveton since 1947. He was a director of the Peoples National Bank, Groveton for many years, serving as president from 1976-1981. He was the Advisory Board Chairman for the Berlin City Bank, Groveton Branch from 1981 to the present. His hobbies included playing duplicate bridge, attaining status of Senior Master, golfing with his many golf companions, and he was proud to have shot scores in the 70s in each of seven decades. He enjoyed candlepin bowling and bowled in local leagues for many years. He belonged to the American Numismatic Association and Granite State Post Card Collectors Club. Doc especially enjoyed keeping up with his grandchildren and their activities. He is survived by one son, Dr. William Hinkley of St. Louis, MO.; one daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Carolyn "Dani") Lunn of Whitefield; one granddaughter, Katherine Hinkley of Wentzville, MO; two grandsons, Jeffrey Lunn of Waltham, Mass., and William Lunn of Mystic, Conn.; one sister-in-law, Grace Hinkley of Lancaster; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Katherine Hinkley, on January 18, 2001; and one brother, Walter "Bud" Hinkley. There will be no calling hours at Doc’s request. Private graveside services for him and Katherine will be held in the Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to either the Weeks Medical Center Cardiac Unit or the Oncology Unit, c/o Marion McCaig, 173 Middle Street, Lancaster, NH 03584.
