Ashby LANCASTER - Alida Marie Ashby, 97, died on May 22, 2001, at Country Village Genesis Elder Care Center, where she had been a resident for the past six years. She was born in Thetford Mines, Que. on Nov. 17, 1903, the daughter of Francois and Leah (Cyr) Plante. She grew up in a log cabin, the oldest of 13 children. Among her fondest memories were playing the harmonica and receiving a porcelain doll at age 10 from the United States. She went to work in the mills of Sanford, Me. to help support her family. There, at age 18, she met Henry Joseph Dubreuil of Berlin. They married and lived in Berlin. She also worked in the mills of Lincoln. After a big layoff of the Berlin mill, they bought a farm on the North Road in Lancaster. She worked the fields, milking cows in the barn, gardening, sewing, and canning. They raised five children. Her husband died in 1952. Later she met and married her second husband, Leo Ashby of Sherbrooke, Que. She lived there until 1979, who they moved to the McKee Inn in Lancaster. Her second husband died in 1983. She remained at the McKee Inn until she lost her eyesight. She then went to Holton Point and on to Country Village. She was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church of Lancaster. Family members include two sons, Robert Dubreuil of Nashua and Rene Dubreuil of Lancaster; a daughter, Cecile Dutremble of Biddeford, Me.; 22 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Amozar Greniere of Magog, Que., and Bernadette Lessard of Thetford Mines; and two brothers, Silvio Plante and Armand Plante, both of Sherbrooke. She was predeceased by a son, Raymond Dubreuil, and a daughter, Theresa Hartlan. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Friday in Christ United Methodist with the Rev. John Mazzei officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
