Jackson CANAAN, Vt. - Elmont "Monty" Elgin Jackson, 81, died on May 1, 2001, at the Coös County Nursing Home in West Stewartstown after a long illness. He was the son of Arnold and Melvina (Dawson) Jackson, born on April 28, 1920, in Bishopton, Quebec, Canada. He spent his early childhood years in Bishopton before moving to Stanhope, Quebec, and then to Canaan in the early 1930s. His family lived in the Alice Ward home (the library) before building their own home on Gale Street. He attended grade school at Norton School and high school at Canaan High, where he played basketball and the violin in Lynwood Peck’s orchestra. He joined the Army Corps of Engineers and served as an amphibious vehicle operator in the European theater during World War II. He returned to Canaan from the war to take over his father’s logging operation, finish a home, and start a family. He was a life member of the America Legion Post 47; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10202, Canaan; a charter member of the Border Lions Club, and was awarded their highest award, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, in 1997. He was a member of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Conservation group, the Averill Lakes Association and a founding member of the Lake Wallace Association. He was an avid gardener, hunter, trapper and fisherman. The family includes his wife of 60 years, Audrey (Demmell) Jackson of Canaan; six daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Bonnie) Crawford, Connie Trachtenberg, Mrs. Serge (Donna) Lemay, Mrs. Marc (Francine) Bigney, Mrs. Gerald (Gloria) Devost, and Mrs. Mario (Hylie) Marquis; a sister, Ina Sergeant of Ottawa, Ontario; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral was Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Canaan, with the Rev. Rodney Dobbs officiating. Burial will be in the Alice Hunt Cemetery in Canaan.
