"Daddy" (Jack the Indian) Shatney, 83, of Groveton, died on Friday, May 4, 2001 at Weeks Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born on September 11, 1917 in Clarksville, he was the son of James and Alice (Terrill) Shatney. He has been a resident of Groveton for 15 years, coming from Cape Cod, Mass. Before retiring in September of 1979 he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Perini Corp. and Campella Corp., doing road construction. He was a member of the Groveton United Methodist Church. He was a founder and charter member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association, Chapter H. He was a member of the Seventy Six Lodge #14 in Swanton, Vt. and a life member of the American Motorcycle Association. He was the director of the Groveton Ambulance Corps for many years. He was in the Civil Service, stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii right after Pearl Harbor. Every Sunday after church he went to Country Village-Genesis Elder Care and visited the elderly. He was studying to become a "Local Pastor." Mr. Shatney is survived by one son, John N. Shatney, of Groveton; five daughters, Cassandra White of Groveton, Urbina LeBel of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sydney Boyle, Hallie Johnston and Harriet Sanborn, all of Groveton; two adopted daughters, Kathy Watson of Berlin and Else Dart of Groton, Conn.; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Sherman Shatney and John Shatney, both of Colebrook; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Shatney, on February 3, 2001, and his brother, Floyd Shatney, on February 23, 2000. A calling hour was held on Monday, May 7, with a funeral service immediately following at Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton. The Reverend John Taylor officiated. Burial for Harold and Evelyn followed at Emerson Road Cemetery in Stark. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Groveton Ambulance Corps, c/o E.R.
