Sullivan McIntosh, UNH alumna, Ship Yard retiree Ruth Frances Sullivan, 90, of 112 Sixth Street died Sunday April 29, 2001 at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center. Born in Somersworth on May 14, 1910 the daughter of Daniel Francis and Melanie (Wimpfheimer) Sullivan and has resided in this area most of her lifetime. She was a graduate of Somersworth High School and McIntosh College and the University of New Hampshire. She was a secretary for the U.S. Government having worked in Washington D.C. for 8 years and for the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard for 30 years retiring in 1973. Ruth was a member of St. Mary Church and a member of the Friends of the Dover Public Library. She is survived by two sisters Alicia M. Sullivan and Mary Melanie Sullivan both of Dover and several cousins. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a sister Doris M. Sullivan. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Church with The Reverend Fritz Cerullo, OSA, pastor as celebrant. Burial followed in the family lot in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somersworth. Arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. Philip H. Kurbs GM retiree Philip H. Kurbs, 78 of Independence Drive died Wednesday May 2, 2001 at his home following a long period of failing health. He was born July 10, 1922 in Buffalo, New York the son of Karl H. and Emma (Klein) Kurbs. He has lived in Dover for the past year and a half, having moved from Lakes Whales, FL. After 33 years of service, Philip retired from General Motors Corporation, where he had been employed in the Body Shop. Since moving to Dover, he was a member of the Heritage Baptist Church. Philip enjoyed camping. Members of the family include his wife: Aline A. (Vigeant) Kurbs of Dover, His sons: Thomas Kurbs and Karl Kurbs both of Marlborough, MA. A step-daughter; Paulette (Mrs. Clyde) Vlass of Dover, His Sisters: Eunice Gustafson of Marlborough, MA., Patricia Roebuck & Nancy Ball both of FL. Also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter: Phyllis Bergeron of Marlborough, MA. Services were at Heritage Baptist Church with The Reverend Mike Stalmaker, pastor officiating. Burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home 621 Central Avenue. Vivia Eva Hawkins GE retiree Vivia Eva Hawkins, 85, of 154 Old Fields Rd., South Berwick, died suddenly Thursday April 26, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. Born in Craftsbury, Vermont on July 13, 1915 the daughter of Victor and Bessie (Colburn) Gilbert she has lived in this area for many years. Prior to her retirement she was an assembler at the meter department at the General Electric Co., Somersworth. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of Somersworth where she taught primary in the Church School and was a member of the Relief Society of the Church. She is survived by a daughter Leola L. Amadon of Lunenburg, Vt., a son Gene Hawkins of So. Berwick, eight grandchildren, a brother Frederick Gilbert of Perryville, MD and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Frank W. Hawkins, a son Arnold F. Hawkins, a brother Richard Gilbert and a sister Lois Macray. Services were at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop Samuel S. Pendelton officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, So. Berwick, ME. Dorothy Wilson Greenaway Nason Philanthropist Dorothy Wilson Greenaway Nason, of Langdon Place, 60 Middle Road, formerly of Nute Road, Dover and winter resident of North Port, FL and Indian Rocks Beach, FL, died April 26, 2001 at her home with her children. She was 88. Born April 26, 1913, in Dover to Robert W. & Annie (Stearns) Greenaway, she graduated from Dover High School in 1931, attended UNH and graduated from Posse Nissen College in Boston in 1935. She taught two years at Laconia State School before marrying her high school sweetheart, the late Donald B. Nason also of Dover, in 1937. They lived in New Jersey, Cincinnati, OH, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, and Amherst. Dorothy spent her life supporting her husband's career, raising her children and volunteering to help others and making the world a better place than she found it. A physical therapist, she volunteered at the Percy Jones Veterans Rehab facility in Battle Creek, Michigan during WWII. She was active in many environmental concerns, especially water and forest conservation, having made a presentation before the NH State Legislature on behalf of the Amherst Water Conservation District. Her efforts also extended to church, historical, and genealogical research and study. She was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Northam Colonists, Piscataqua Pioneers, League of Women Voters, DAR (Margery Sullivan Chapter), Dover Women's Club, UNH Alumni Association, Strafford Co. & NH Society of Geneologists, US Power Squadrons, Audubon Society, Strafford Three Rivers Conservancy, Society for the Protection of NH Forests, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Auxiliary and the Manning Family Association. In addition to her volunteering, she enjoyed boating, nature, playing bridge, and maintaining active correspondence with family, friends and acquaintances around the world. She had an insatiable curiosity about the people and world around her. She is pre-deceased by her husband of nearly 55 years, Donald Biederman Nason, and sister Marjorie Holmes. Survivors include a son, Robert Greenaway Nason of Green Bay, WI; a daughter Judith Ann Nason Jacobs of North Port, FL; and a sister, Phyllis Waldron of Kennebunk, ME. She also leaves five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She included all the step grandchildren and great-grandchildren as her own. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Dover, or The Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord, NH 03301 Yvonne Nancy Bledsoe Bookbinder Yvonne Nancy Bledsoe, 91, of 12 Cove Court died Friday April 27, 2001at St. Ann Home in Dover. Born in Biddeford, ME on June 5, 1905 the daughter of Louis and Laura (Thievege) Noel. She had formerly lived in Saco, ME and lived in California for 20 years and came to Rochester four years ago. She was a bookbinder by trade and had worked for bookbinding companies. The widow of Floyd "Red" Bledsoe she is survived by three sisters Valeda Brehaut of Rochester with whom she has made her home for many years, Alice Healy of Dover and Chantal Stewart of California, a brother Joseph Noel of Rochester and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the chapel at St. Ann Home with The Reverend Thomas Coover, chaplain, officiating. Burial is in St. Mary New Cemetery. "Pete" Bouchard, 75, of 160 Back River Rd., died Thursday, May 03, 2001 at his home following a period of failing health. Born in Fall River, MA July 4, 1925, he was the son of the late Pierre H. and Blanche A. (Cote) Bouchard. During WWII and the Korean War he served in the United States Navy. A resident of Dover since 1953, "Pete" retired from the City of Dover as Director of Public Works in 1991. He was honored last week when it was announced that the new public works building was being named in his honor and will be known as the Pierre R. Bouchard Public Works Building, recognizing his loyal and exemplary service to this city. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. Mr. Bouchard was a member of the American Legion, Post #8 of Dover, the Squalus Submarine Veterans Association of WWII, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Dover Lodge #184, and the Rochester Pigeon Club. His interests included the raising and racing of pigeons. Family members include his wife, Eleanor C. "Charlie" (Burleigh) Bouchard whom he married June 7, 1947 of Dover; one son Peter Gary Bouchard and his wife Lorraine of Portland, ME; one brother, Ronald Bouchard and his wife Lorraine of Tiverton, RI; one sister, Muriel and her husband Alton Reynolds of Tiverton, RI; one granddaughter, Stacy Bouchard of Brechenridge, CO; one step granddaughter, Gail Bombaro of Saco, ME. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Church with The Reverend Robert F. Cole, pastor, as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Mary New Cemetery, Dover Point. Fred Rene Mayrand Eminent psychologist Dr. Fred Rene Mayrand, Psychologist, 76, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the Emmanuel Campus of Care, after a lengthy period of failing health. He was born May 28, 1924 in Dover, the son of Philip L. and Corinne B. (LeBel) Mayrand. He was a graduate of St. Charles Parochial School in Dover and later attended the Oblate Seminary (Prep School) in Colebrook for two years. He completed his secondary education at Dover High School, class of 1943. He enlisted and served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Casablanca, Morocco from 1943-46. He received his MBA from the University of New Hampshire in 1949 and did post graduate studies at the Institution de Psychologie, Universite' de Montreal, 1949-50. He attended Fordham University from 1953 to 1954 and received his MA at New York University followed by his PHD with high honors in 1958. His thesis: "Human Factors Scientist, System Development Corporation, Santa Monica, CA," 1958-63. Dr. Mayrand was appointed Director of Psychological Services, New York City for 1963-66. In 1966, he became Senior Consultant, James N. Farr Association, New York City, 1966-69. Chief Psychologist, American Management Psychologists, NYC, 1969-72. He was an associate of the Hay Association, San Francisco, CA. That same year, he was appointed Consultant with the Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archdiocese. Member of the Psychological Association , Los Angeles County Psychological Associates, CA, (Distinguished Service Award) He was a member of the Los Angeles Society of Clinical Psychologists. He subsequently went into private practice as a Clinical Psychologist in Santa Monica, CA in 1973 until his retirement in 1983 to Arizona. Dr. Mayrnad's name is listed in "Who's Who in the West –1982-83." In addition to his professional duties, Dr. Mayrand's life was deeply enriched by his love of the classics in art, literature, music and opera, and he traveled when necessary to enjoy those in interests. Dr. Mayrand was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters. Survivors include three sisters: Beatrice Hourihane and Emma Cichonski of Dover and Therese deRochemont of North Hampton; one brother, A. Ferdinand Mayrand of Portsmouth; five nieces and seven nephews. Celebration of Life Mass was held at St. Clemens of Rome in Sun City, AZ.
