Messina Veteran Alfred C. "Freddy" Messina, 82, of 4 High Knoll Drive, died Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, North Berwick, ME, following a long illness. Born in Lawrence, MA January 3, 1919, he was the son of Salvatore and Maria Giacona Messina. He was raised in Lawrence and attended schools there. During WW II he served in the United States Army Air Corps where he served with the 482nd Bomb Squadron 505th Group in the twentieth Air Force in the Marianas Islands. He flew on 22 combat missions over Japan. Mr. Messina was cofounder of Columbia Auto Seat Covering in Lawrence. After that he owned and operated Columbia Upholstery of Kittery for 30 years. Mr. Messina was a resident of South Berwick since 1986, previously residing in Kittery. He was a member of the Sons of Italy, The American Legion, and the Loyal Order of Elks. Family members include his wife, M. Juanita Boyle Messina of South Berwick; three daughters, Marie O'Hagan and her husband Barry of North Andover, MA, Michele Messina of Sherbrooke, PQ, Canada, and Simone Woodyard and her husband Brad of Carmel Valley, CA; his wife's children, Patricia Thayer of South Berwick, Eileen Boyle of Dover, Mickey Boyle of Centerville, VA, Frank Boyle of Melrose, MA, Dennis Boyle of Strafford, Kevin Boyle of Keene, and Brian Boyle of Kittery; two brothers, Ned Messina and his wife Regina of Lawrence, MA, and Joseph Messina and his wife Marilyn of Andover, MA; one sister, Santina Giacona DiStefano of Catania, Sicily; 10 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Somersworth. Burial was at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence, MA. Funeral arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, 47 Elm St. North Berwick, ME 03906. Eleanor C. Bouchard Lifelong resident, homemaker Eleanor C. "Charlie" Bouchard, of 160 Back River Rd., died Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born in Dover February 17, 1926, she was the daughter of Katherine Brennen Hall. "Charlie" was a graduate of Dover High School and McIntosh Secretarial School. She had been employed at Eastern Air Devices for five years and was a homemaker. She was a lifelong resident of this city. Mrs. Bouchard was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. Her husband, the late Pierre R. "Pete" Bouchard, former public works director for the city of Dover, died Thursday May 3, 2001. Family members include one son and his wife, Peter Gary and Lorraine Bouchard of Portland, ME; one granddaughter, Stacey Bouchard of Breckenridge, CO; one step granddaughter, Gail Bombaro of Saco, ME; sister-in-law, Muriel Reynolds of Tiverton, RI; one brother-in-law, Ronald Bouchard of Tiverton, RI. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Church. Burial followed in St. Mary New Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A. Larry Hall Scout leader Alfred Larry Hall, 82, of 160 Henry Law Ave., died Friday May 11, 2001 at Langdon Place of Dover. Born in Exeter on November 19, 1918 the son of Charles Alfred and Ethel Mae (Clarke) Hall. He has lived in Dover since he was seven years old and was a graduate of Dover High School. Larry worked as an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and then worked as a truck driver for the C. H. Sprague Co. for 28 years until his retirement in 1978, and was a member of the Teamsters Truckers Union Local #633. He later worked for the Robbins Auto Parts Warehouse. He was active with the Boy Scouts Troop #170 at St. Joseph's for many years and was also an Explorer Leader. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. A member of St. Joseph's Church, he served as an usher for many years and was a member of the former Holy Name Society of the church. He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years Eleanor L. "Ellie" (Fogarty) Hall, five sons Norman L. Hall of Ventura, CA, Robert M. Hall of Berwick, ME, Denis A. Hall of Manchester, Charles A. Hall of Fort Worth, TX and Vincent J. Hall of Dover, three daughter Valerie L. Gillen of Barrington, Marcia M. Arthur of Seattle, WA, Kathleen A. Hall of Lee, 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother Leon L. Hall of New Durham and Florida and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Sharon Arthur in 1970, a brother Charles M. Hall and a sister Helen Virginia Begley. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. Burial is in St. Mary New Cemetery. Mattes Veteran, Master Plumber James T. Mattes, 57 of Park Street died peacefully Thursday May 10, 2001 with his family at his side, at Hanover Hill Health Care Center in Manchester. He was born in Quincy, MA February 25, 1944 the son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Keefe) Mattes. A Veteran of the US Army, he served his Country during the Viet Nam War. He was a self employed Master Plumber having worked in the NH area for many years. A loving father, he was an avid Outdoorsman, with a passion for hunting and fishing. He was looked up to as a great father, grandfather, brother and mentor. Members of the family include: his sons: Michael J. Mattes of Bedford, NH, Thomas E. Mattes of Northfield, Robert C. Mattes of Rumney, NH and James F.H. Mattes of Northfield. He was predeceased by a son Jon F. Mattes in 1981 he is also survived by his daughters: Michelle C. Moxley of Norfolk, VA and Lia M. Darling of Dumfries, VA 2 sisters: Maureen R. Gravina and his twin sister, Judith A. Ryan both of Uxbridge, MA. He was predeceased by a sister: Janet Rusconi. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Heath A. Moxley and Garrett M. Darling. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Charles Church, Central Ave. Burial with full military honors followed in St. Charles Cemetery. Langlois, 83, of 6 Monroe St., died Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Rochester Manor following a period of failing health. Born in South Berwick, ME November 1, 1917, she was the daughter of John and Rose Anna (Brisard) Bureau. She was a fancy stitcher, last working at Miller Shoe Co. of Dover. She had previously worked at various shoe shops in this area. Mrs. Langlois was a communicant of St. Charles Church. Family members include her husband of 60 years, Leo J. Langlois of Dover; one son Raynor W. Palmer of Dover; one daughter, Ruby Ann Kimball of West Lebanon, ME; two stepsons, Richard L. Langlois of Dover and Robert W. Langlois of Turnersville, NJ; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Charles Church. Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery. Glidden, 93, of 5 Glencrest Ave., died Thursday May 10, 2001 at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center after a period of failing health. Born in Dover on November 17, 1907 the daughter of Eteinne and Anna LaBrecque, she attended Dover schools and has lived here all of her lifetime. She worked as an assembler at the Davidson Rubber Company and retired nearly 30 years ago. Mrs. Glidden was a communicant of St. Joseph Church and a member of the Purity Rebekah Lodge. She was predeceased by her husband John A. Glidden who died in 1960, a daughter Irene A. Grenier who died in 2000, two brothers Joseph LaBrecque and Frank LaBrecque, and two sisters Rose Carkins and Min McGlone. She is survived by a daughter Irma Webb and her husband Richard of Winter Haven Florida, a son-in-law Arthur Grenier of Dover, 7 grandchildren John Grenier of Boston, MA, Patricia Buffing of Oxford, CT, John Phipps of Bergenfield, NJ, Arthur Grenier, II of Milford, Del., Cynthia Wallace of Upper Marlboro, MD, Helen Sheehan of Milford, CT, and Michelle Phipps of York, ME, 6 great-grandchildren and a niece Eva Cliché of Dover. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Church. Burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Avenue. Dolph, 69, of 108 Grove Street died Thursday, May 10, 2001 at his residence after a brief illness. Born April 26, 1932 he was the son of James and Anna Katherine (Rickert) Dolph. Robert graduated from Dover High School, class of 1950. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Vulcan (AR5) during the Korean War. He was employed as a Dover Police Officer for ten years and recently retired from the Department of Defense Police as a Lieutenant at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Robert was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Moses Paul Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. His hobbies were his family and his home. Survivors include his wife of forty-nine years, Doris (Brooks) Dolph of Dover; a son James E. Dolph and his wife, Bonnie of South Berwick, Maine; four grandchildren, Miranda, Mallory, Adam and Abigail. A private family service is at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements were with the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue. Carroll, RN WDH retiree Mary P. Carroll, 95, widow of Joseph P. Carroll, of Riverview Drive died Tuesday May 8, 2001 at the Kirkwood Corners in Lee, NH. Born in Dover, NH November 2, 1905, she was the daughter of Frank W. and Martha (Haley) Prescott. She was a graduate of Dover High School and Wentworth Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed for many years at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital where she was a supervisor, retiring in 1972. After her marriage, she and her husband were the first to settle on Riverview Drive in Eliot where they encouraged and participated in warm neighborhood gatherings. She was a member of Wentworth Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and was active in Eliot Senior Citizens for many years. Mrs. Carroll was affiliated with St. John's United Methodist Church of Dover. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph P. Carroll who died February 25, 1999. Family members include one son, Patrick J. Carroll of Louisville, KY; two grandchildren, Patrick Carroll, Jr. of Eliot and Catherine Maynard of Portland, ME; four great grandchildren, Neva M. Carroll, Patrick Carroll and Mathieu Carroll, all of Eliot and Nicholas Maynard of Portland, ME. Funeral services were held at Tasker Funeral Home with The Reverend Anne Robertson, pastor, of St. John's United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.
