Sabins Sportsman William T. Sabins, 88, of 86 Broadway died Friday, May 11, 2001 at Riverside Rest Home after a period of failing health. Born April 17, 1913, he was the son of Martin and Saddie (Burke) Sabins. He was employed as a millwright for thirty-one years at National Gypsum of Portsmouth retiring in 1978. An avid outdoors sportsman, he especially enjoyed fishing. The widower of Grace (Bond) Sabins who died in 1983, he is survived by a son William T. Sabins, Jr. of Dover; two step-sons Joseph Vigneault of Lebanon, Maine and Bruce Morris of Portsmouth; A daughter, Ms. Linda Patrick of Dover; one brother, Fred C. Sabins of San Diego, CA; nieces, nephews; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Virginia Booth and by two brothers, Martin and Kenneth Sabins. Funeral services were held at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home with the Reverend Kenneth Monahan of the Dover Baptist Church, officiating. Larry Hall Teamster, Scout leader Alfred Larry Hall, 82, of 160 Henry Law Ave., died Friday May 11, 2001 at Langdon Place of Dover. Born in Exeter on November 19, 1918 the son of Charles Alfred and Ethel Mae (Clarke) Hall. He has lived in Dover since he was seven years old and was a graduate of Dover High School. Larry worked as an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and then worked as a truck driver for the C.H. Sprague Co. for 28 years until his retirement in 1978, and was a member of the Teamsters Truckers Union Local #633. He later worked for the Robbins Auto Parts Warehouse. He was active with the Boy Scouts Troop #170 at St. Joseph's for many years and was also an Explorer Leader. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. A member of St. Joseph Church, he served as an usher for many years and was a member of the former Holy Name Society of the church. He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years Eleanor L. "Ellie" (Fogarty) Hall, five sons Norman L. Hall and his wife Barbara Hall of Ventura, CA, Robert M. Hall and his wife Patricia of Berwick, ME, Denis A. Gagne-Hall and his wife Rita Gagne-Hall of Manchester, Charles A. Hall of Fort Worth, TX, and Vincent J. Hall of Dover, three daughters Valerie L. Gillen of Barrington, Marcia M. Arthur of Seattle WA, Kathleen A. Hall and her husband Kiyoshi Imai of Lee, 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother Leon L. Hall of New Durham and Florida and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Sharon Arthur in 1970, a son-in-law Ronald Gillen in 1990, a brother Charles M. Hall and a sister Helen Virginia Begley. Funeral arrangements were handled by Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. burial will be in St. Mary New Cemetery. Those who wish are invited to make memorials in his name to St. Mary Academy, 222 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820. Margaret M. Hughes Loved sports, children Margaret M. (Hudson) Hughes, 67, died peacefully on May 11, 2001 at her Naples, FL home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on August 10, 1933, the daughter of the late Bernard and Margaret (McConville) McInerney. She was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 1955, she moved to NH and raised her family in Rochester. For many years she worked in the Rochester School lunch program, where she loved cooking for and being with children. She later worked at the Holy Rosary Credit Union. For the last several years, she and her husband made their home in Boston, MA and wintered in their Naples, FL home, which she loved. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Naples, FL. She is survived and will be missed by her loving husband Thomas Hughes; daughters Peggy Chouinard and husband Richard, and Patricia Riordan and husband Marty of Dover; sons Edward Hudson of Lebanon, ME and William Hudson and fiancé Stephanie O'Der of Rochester; stepchildren Laurie Lorenz and husband Doug of Greenland, NH and Craig Hughes of New Castle; brother Bernard Michael McInerney of Pahrump, NV; grandchildren Michael Driscoll, Alex Chouinard and Kendra Riordan of Dover, Craig McKuhen of East Rochester, and Evan and Thomas Hudson of Lebanon, ME; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Margaret loved sports and especially enjoyed watching when her children and grandchildren played. She was a kind and loving person who will be remembered for her generous heart and her love of people. Her loss will be felt by many. Marieta Woodhead Nurse, longtime resident Marieta C. Woodhead, 78, of 175 Spur Rd., died Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born in Middlebury, VT April 28, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Walter R. and Edna M. (Dwyer) Brown. Mrs. Woodhead was a longtime resident of this area, having lived in Dover, Lee and Durham. She had previously lived in Keene. She was a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1941 and Elliot Hospital School of Nursing of Keene, class of 1944. She served in the United States Army Nurse Corps and had also worked at Keene and Middlebury hospitals. Her last employment was at the student infirmary at the University of New Hampshire. Her husband, Roger W. Woodhead predeceased her on July 21, 1980. Family members include one brother, Kenneth E. Brown and his wife Barbara of Windsor, VT; a nephew, Kenneth T. Brown Sr. of Windsor, VT and great nephew and niece, Kenneth T. Brown, Jr. and Katherine E. Brown, both of Windsor, VT. Graveside services were held at Lee Hill Cemetery, with The Reverend James G. Pirie, associate pastor of First Parish Congregational Church officiating. Mary Jo Tear Long time resident Mary Josephine Tear, 98, formerly of Central Towers, Dover died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family Saturday May 12, 2001 at the SunBridge Rehabilitation & Living Center in Rochester. Born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on March 3, 1903 the daughter of Robert and Martha (Dykeman) McNulty. She was a former longtime resident of Dover prior to moving to Rochester 6 years ago. Mary was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Dover and she prayed and was very devoted to the Rosary. She was blessed with a good mind to the very end and won Spelling Bee's at SunBridge. She is survived by a daughter Nancy L. Duyon Kavanagh and her husband John H. Kavanagh of Barrington, a brother Robert McNulty and his wife Catherine of Ontario, Canada, four grandchildren Mrs. William (Debra) Gitschier of Dover, Mrs. James (Mary-Jayne) Rollins of Barrington, Jack Duyon of Dover, and Mrs. Andrew (Kathleen) Tryon of York, ME, six great-grandchildren Jeff Gitschier, Michael Gerard, Stephen Gerard, Timothy Martin, Christian Martin, and Shane Martin and five nephews and three nieces. In addition to her husband Henry G. Tear who died April 3, 1977 a baby sister Marguerite and six brothers Harold , William, John, Gerald, Frank and Gordon predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary's Church, with the Reverend Fritz Cerullo, OSA, Pastor as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary Cemetery. Boothby Special police officer, veteran, Mason Leon H. Boothby, 88 of 8 Brookmoor Road, died Saturday, May 19 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health. He was born December 22, 1912 the son of John and Susan (Hazelton) Boothby. Schooled here in Dover, Leon joined the US Navy and served during WWII. Later he became a machinist for the Kidder Press Company (Moore Business Forms). He has been a resident of Dover for more than 80 years. Leon was a member of the Strafford Lodge of Masons, Moore Old Timers Club and a Special Police Officer for the Dover Police Department. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy (Clarry) Boothby, one daughter Susan Brown and her husband Terry of Rollinsford, a step-son Sterling Boardman and his wife Jean of Portsmouth, two grandchildren Stephanie and Craig Brown of Rollinsford and two step-grandchildren Dianna Erbach and her husband Scott of Rochester and Vernon Boardman of Portsmouth. Funeral Services were at St. John's United Methodist Church with The Reverend Anne Robertson officiating. Burial followed at New Town Cemetery in Rollinsford. Vreeland Longtime resident Mildred Isabella Vreeland, 87, formerly of Portland St., died Thursday May 17, 2001 at the Newton Center in Sanford. Born in Lewiston on September 9, 1913 the daughter of Harry E. and Hazel I. (Dawes) Snow. She was a longtime resident of South Berwick prior to moving to Sanford 9 years ago. The widow of Eldred R. Vreeland who died September 29, 1994 she is survived by a daughter and her husband Ethel and Lloyd Pelletier of York, ME, 4 grandchildren Bruce Pelletier, Belinda Esterbrook, Brenda Boyle and Bryan Pelletier, and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a sister Marion Quaglietta and a brother Edward Snow. Private graveside funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, NH with Rev. Donna Lee Muise, pastor of the First Parish Federated church, South Berwick officiating. Arrangements are by the McIntire McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, ME.
