Included in the USGenWeb Archives with permission. http://seacoastonline.com Dorothy Mae Greenlaw Active in Emblem Club Dorothy Greenlaw, 91, former longtime resident of Dover, died Saturday, August 11, 2001 in her son’s home surrounded by her family. She was born August 21, 1909 in Everett, MA. The daughter of Josephine (Sweeney) Poehler and Carl Poehler. She attended Everett High School and graduated in 1927. She moved to Melrose, MA in 1938 and to Dover in 1946. She was employed by the Strafford County Commissioners for 16 years in the Welfare Department. She was a member of the Dover Emblem Club No. 4 for many years and acted as President and Supreme District Deputy of the Supreme Emblem Club. She was the widow of Rufus A. Greenlaw who died in 1976 and pre-deceased by three sisters, Marion Ambrose of Medford, MA, Phyllis Cummings and Virginia Poehler of Everett MA. Survivors include one son, Bruce W. Greenlaw and his wife Carolina of Chula Vista, CA; one sister Berneice Brown of Lexington, MA; one brother Carl Poehler Jr. of Melrose, MA; one sister-in-law Dorothy F. Courchesne of Dover; eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Funeral services were held at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home with The Reverend James Pirie of the First Parish Congregational Church of Dover officiating. Burial is in Pine Hill Cemetery. Bahmer, Sr. Vet, good friend, neighbor Ernest Franklin Bahmer, Sr., 74, of 165 Spur Road died Friday, August 17, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born May 30, 1927 in Melrose, MA he was the son of Ernest Everett and Stella (MacCauly) Bahmer. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a gunner’s mate on the USS St. Paul and was present during the unconditional surrender at the end of WW II. He worked as a mechanic on the Woods Hole Research Vessel, Albatross, he also worked on a beam trawler for off-shore commercial fishing. He was employed by Sylvania and then for B.P. Gibbs Oil of Portland, Maine as a mechanic and heavy-equipment operator, retiring in 1996. He was a good friend and neighbor, always ready to give a hand. He was a member of the N.H. Power of the Past and Maine Antique Power Association and was a proud owner of a 1920 Ford Model T. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Margarett Shirley (Graffam) Bahmer of Dover; three sons, Ernest Franklin Bahmer, Jr. of Kittery, ME, Kurt William Bahmer of Dover and Eric Christine Bahmer of Reno, Nevada; two daughters, Cheryl Lyon of Salem, MA and Barbara Ann Sullivan of Lowell, MA.; one sister, Irene Delores Buckley of MA; five grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews. Funeral services were at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, with the The Reverend Abby Lynn Campbell, of First Parish Church, Congregational, officiating. Butterfield, 98, formerly of 412 Cocheco Park, died Saturday, August 11, 2001 at the Sunbridge Nursing Home in Rochester after a period of failing health. Born September 25, 1902 in Glasgow Scotland she was the daughter of James U. Morgan and Florence Ward (Campbell). She came to the United States in 1914. She was employed as office manager for Frank Rossi and Sons in Cape Elizabeth, ME retiring in 1969. She was a former resident of South Berwick, ME and a 15-year resident of Dover. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ralph E. (Joan) Butterfield of Milford, MA; three grand children Mrs. Valerie Ward Murphy of Douglas MA, Christopher Butterfield of Uxbridge, MA, and Ralph E. Butterfield Jr., of Worcester, MA. She was predeceased by her son Ralph E. Butterfield III, a brother John Jack Morgan, and a grand-daughter Lisa Ann Butterfield. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the educational institute or scholarship fund of one’s choice. Leon E. LaFleur Veteran, school employee Leon E. LaFleur, 88, of 32 Courtland St. died Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Univ. of Mass Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Born in Haverhill, MA on April 15, 1913 the son of Alfred and Mary (Marcotte) LaFleur. He lived in Dover for many years prior to moving to Marlborough, Massachusetts. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Prior to his retirement he was maintenance for the City of Dover, School Department. Leon was a communicant of St. Charles Church in Dover. He is survived by his wife Marie Ange (Sevigny) LaFleur, a daughter Rita Arthur of Marlborough, MA, three granddaughters Sharon Roche of Marlborough, MA, Jennifer Libby of Clinton, MA, Pamela Fondas of Clinton, MA, two great-grandchildren Brien Roche of Clinton, MA, Albert James Libby of Clinton, MA, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers Alfred LaFleur, Richard LaFleur, Ambroise LaFleur, two sisters Dorothy Seville, Rose Shippie. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Charles Church with The Reverend Paul Gregoire officiated. Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery in Dover. Funeral arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Paul V. Bernier Vet, library custodian Paul Valmore Bernier, 75, of 74 Glenwood Avenue, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Dover Rehab. and Living Center. He was born February 27, 1926 in Dover, the son of the late Joseph C. Bernier and the late Vezinalda (Brochu) Bernier. He attended Dover Schools and has lived here all of his lifetime. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and is a life member of the Dover Post #8 American Legion. Prior to his retirement he was the custodian for the Dover Public Library. The widower of Norma (Manchester) Bernier who died in 1983 he is survived by a son Paul R. Bernier and his wife Ellen of Portsmouth, a daughter Jill Ann Thorner and her husband Bruce of Dover, two brothers Armand V. “Speck” Bernier of Tennessee and Leo R. Bernier of Somersworth, three sisters Anita Caron of Dover, Beatrice Vezina of Laconia and Colin Thorner, Shannon Thorner and Logan Thorner, two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, two sisters -- Claire Roy and Rita Thornton -- predeceased him. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church with The Reverend Fritz Cerullo, pastor, as celebrant. Burial is in St. Mary New Cemetery. Marshall Member OES, MNB bookkeeper Dorothy A. Marshall, 65, died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at Langdon Place of Dover. Born in Wilmont on October 7, 1915, the daughter of Leon and Mabel (Walker) Stetson and had lived in Concord prior to moving to Dover her freshman year in high school and was a graduate of Dover High School. She was a longtime employee of the former Merchants National Bank where she was head bookkeeper. She retired from her full time position in 1980 and continued to work at the bank part time for several more years. Dorothy was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her family was her life. The widow of Harley L. Marshall who died in 1967, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands – Joanne and Michael Allaire of Sanford, ME, Lee and Alan Babel of Somersworth and a step-grandson, Shawn Allaire of Portland, ME. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, John Stetson and James Stetson. Services were at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with The Reverend Robert S. Ervin, rector, officiating. Burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home.
