Applegarth Baptist, Eastern Star Eunice R. Applegarth, 91, of 13 Vine Street, South Berwick, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center. Born in Rollinsford on August 9, 1910, she was the daughter of George R. and Delia (Marshall) Roberts and has lived in the Rollinsford and South Berwick area all of her lifetime. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of South Berwick and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Roy M. Applegarth who died October 28, 2000. She is survived by three grandchildren – Julie Applegarth of Limington, ME, Joyce Applegarth of Florida and Jill Kaleel of South Carolina – and nine great-grandchildren. Her son, Lee Applegarth, predeceased her in 1976. Services were September 5 from the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Wagner of the First Baptist Church officiating. Irons Teacher, volunteer Evie May Irons, 75, of 8 Hampshire Circle died Saturday September 1, 2001 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Bath, ME on October 10, 1925 the daughter of Frank C. and Ruth M. (Chatman) Given, and was a former resident of Bath, ME and Boston, MA prior to moving here in 1949. Evie was a former employee of the Dover Drug Store, and later for the Clarostat Manufacturing Co., and Dunkin Donuts. She was a member of the Hope Community Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and participated in it’s choir and served as chairman of the foreign missions committee. She volunteered at the Dover Food Pantry and was employed by and also did volunteer work for the Strafford County Community Action. The widow of Joseph A. Irons who died in 1984 she is survived by three daughters Jean I. Knox of Rochester, Janice L. Ham and her husband John of East Wakefield, Judith R. Lizotte and her husband William of Allenstown, three sons Jams H. Irons and his wife Alyce of Nashua, Joseph A. Irons, Jr., and his wife Martha of Dillsburg, PA, and Jeffery F. Irons of Dover, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters Lena G. Flemming of Belchertown, MA, Phyllis E. Koehling of Freeport, ME, a sister-in-law Virginia Given of Woolrich, ME, cousins, nieces, nephew, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her husband, a brother Clifton H. Leatham Vet, teamster, fisherman Phillip W. Leatham, 51, of 4 James St., died Thursday August 30, 2001 at his home. Born in Ware, MA on July 8, 1950 the son of Frederick and Mildred (Brousseau) Leatham. He was a graduate of the North Brookfield, MA High School and was a former resident of the Stetson Boys Home. He was a US Marine Veteran of the Viet Nam War and a member of the Steven Matthew Kearns Post American Legion. For more than 28 years he has been a truck driver for Automatic Rolls of New England, North East Foods and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local #170 and #493. Phil loved hunting with his two dogs and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 10 years Nikki (Mourgenos) Leatham, a son Christian Leatham and his wife Crystle of Natick, MA; a daughter Alyssa Leatham of Webster, MA; his beloved dogs Fanny Bubmalina and Oliver Twist Tail; two grandsons Zachary Phillip Leatham of Natick, MA and Andrew Leatham Webster, MA; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Priscilla and George Mourgenos of Dover; a sister-in-law Palma Smith; a niece Kimberly Alty and great-niece Shannon Alty; his mother Mildred Leatham of No. Brookfield, MA; 11 brothers and sisters -- Frederick L. Margaret R. Lawrence Longtime Dover resident Margaret R. Lawrence, 55, of 2988 Regency Cove, Sarasota, died suddenly Monday, August 27, 2001 at her home. She was born January 3, 1946 in Dover, the daughter of John J. and the late Kathleen (Goggin) Durkin. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Dover, and received her Bachelors and Masters from the University of New Hampshire. She was a longtime resident of Dover prior to moving to Sarasota a couple of years ago. Margie was Eastern Regional Territory Manager for Wave Wireless, a division of Speedcom in Sarasota. She was a communicant of the Incarnation Church of Sarasota. Albert Belanger Navy veteran Albert Belanger, 83, of Dover Point Rd. died Tuesday August 28, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital following a brief illness. Albert was born in Dover, November 3, 1917 the son of the late Charles and Rose (Gingras) Belanger. Albert dedicated his life to serving his Country in the United States Navy. He retired from the Navy after 25 years active duty and 10 years Reserve duty. Albert attended St. Charles Church, Dover. Following his retirement from the Navy, he had worked at UNH in the Stockroom and at Watts Fluid and Power in Kittery, ME. Members of his family include his brother, William Belanger of Dover; his four sisters -- Eva E. Pomeroy and Madeliene Poitras of Dover, Jeannette Couture of Somersworth, Rose Hutchings of Holdenville, OK; and many nieces and nephews. Dover, NH 03820. Robert McIntire Navy veteran, Knight Robert C. McIntire, 58, of 2 Old Fields Rd., South Berwick, died unexpectedly, Sunday, August 26, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover. Born in Dover, June 18, 1943, he was the son of Paul R. and Ella E. (Clough) McIntire. He was a graduate of South Berwick High School, class of 1962 and served in the United States Navy for four years, from 1962-1966. He was previously employed by Booth Fisheries. Mr. McIntire was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Family members include his wife Madeleine C. (Poirier) McIntire whom he married June 8, 1968; one son, Michael C. McIntire of Barrington; a daughter, Meredith C. McIntire, a student at the University of Maine, Orono; nieces, nephews, and cousin. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Raymond E. McIntire. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael’s Church with The Reverend Phillip Tracy, retired pastor and The Reverend H.J. Cameron, pastor as co-celebrants. Keenan, 73, of Hillcrest Drive, died peacefully at home on Friday, August 31, 2001, of Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He was born in Dover on June 20, 1928, the son of Thomas and Mary (Winslow) Keenan. A lifelong lover of nature, Mr. Keenan drew on his many years of botanical field work to write “Wild Orchids Across North America: A Botanical Tavelogue,” which was published by Timber Press of Portland, Oregon, in 1998. His second book, “Birding Across North America” will be published by Timber Press in January 2002. Mr. Keenan’s writing and photography appeared in numerous magazines and journals. He published 25 articles and more than 100 photographs in the American Orchid Society Magazine. A variety of other popular and scientific magazines published more than 50 of his articles and 200 of his photographs, including 20 magazine covers. After graduating from Dover High School in 1946, he earned a B.S. degree in biology in 1950 from the University of New Hampshire. He was a Korean War Army veteran. Following his military service, he managed the oil heating company his father co-founded, Lord & Keenan. From 1973 to 1983, Mr. Keenan was Dover’s first Conservation Commission chairperson, during which he wrote the pamphlet “Open Space in Dover.” He was a member of the Dover Chamber of Commerce board of directors in the 1970s. A founding member and director of the Strafford Rivers Conservancy, Mr. Keenan also helped to found the North American Native Orchid Alliance, of Ocala, FL. He was a life member of the Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, Save the Redwoods League, and the New Hampshire Audubon Society. Mr. Keenan served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Parish. He gave many nature-related slide presentations for the Friends of the Dover Public Library and garden clubs throughout the region. Mr. Keenan is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan Keenan; a son, Philip, and his wife, Mary Jo, of Rochester, MI.; his daughter, Barbara, of Somerville, MA.; his son, Robert, of San Francisco, CA; his son, Gregory, of Boston, MA.; and two grandchildren, Kaitlin and Michael, of Rochester, MI. Other survivors include his brother, Francis Joyce, and his wife, Joan, of Washington, D.C.; his brother, The Reverend Thomas E. Keenan of Lamoine, ME; his aunt Marguerite Watkins, of Texas, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church. Theresa M. Gregoire St. Mary’s communicant Theresa M. Gregoire, 91, of 611 Sherwood Glen, Somersworth, died early Sunday August 26, 2001 at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a long illness and fight with cancer. Born in Burlington, Vermont on November 2, 1909 the daughter of Louis and Mathilda (Auburn) Brissette. She was a longtime resident of Dover prior to moving to Somersworth. Prior to her retirement she was a longtime employee of the Weiss-Lawrence Shoe Co. Theresa was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Dover. The widow of Louis “Gig” Gregoire who died in 1948, she is survived by three sons who she raised as a single mother Roger Gregoire of Somersworth, Ronald Gregoire of Lewiston, ME and Richard “Rick” Gregoire of Hampton, also 12 grandchildren two of who she raised, and five great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Church, with The Reverend Fritz Cerullo, OSA, pastor as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery.
