Included in the USGenWeb Archives with permission. http://seacoastonline.com Arthur Peter Scott, Sr. Engineer, former police officer Arthur “Pete” Scott, Sr., 63, died Tuesday September 4, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglas Hospital after a period of failing heath. He was born October 21, 1937 in Mt. Pleasant, Valhalla, N.Y. the son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Dries) Scott. He has been a resident of the Dover and Somersworth Area since he was 17 years old. He was employed as an engineer for the Bruno-Stillman Boat Builders of Newington, and was a former Police Officer for the town of Somersworth. His hobbies were woodworking and inventing small projects. He is survived by his wife Marcia (Meehan) Scott of Somersworth; two sons, Arthur Peter Scott, Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Edwin Dwight Scott of Londonderry; one daughter, Mrs. Tammy Houde and her husband Michael of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Goodwin of Alton and Mrs. Sally Souza of Berwick, ME; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews and his little sweet heart (great-niece) Krystal. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Cole Veteran, shipyard retiree Donald H. Cole, 83, of Tri City Road died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at the Riverside Rest Home. Born in Gouldsboro, Maine on February 11, 1918, he was the son of Stephen C. and Inez (Newman) Cole. He has resided in the Dover and Somersworth area for 35 years. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Tech Sergeant after 35 years of service and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He later worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the prison office for 13 years prior to his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Charlotte (Peters) Cole of Somersworth, seven step-children, Leo Gadbois of Rochester, Richard Gadbois of Center Ossipee, Fran Lloyd of Barrington, Anita Martin of Melbourne, FL, Walter Gadbois of Rochester, Pamela Drew of Farmington, and Teri Gadbois of Durham; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Carol Cassell. Services were held at St. Mary’s Church with The Reverend Fritz Cerullo, O.S.A. pastor, as celebrant. Burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery. (Smith) Upton, was stillborn September 4, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglas Hospital. Members of her family include her parents, Thomas S. and Michelle E. Upton of Dover; her brother, Daniel Thomas Upton of Dover, maternal grandmother, Pauline Smith of Somersworth; paternal grandparents, Linda Upton of Rochester and Larry and Kathy Upton of Dover; paternal great grandparents, Franklin B. and Ginny Hayes of Florida and Pearl Upton of Dover; and several aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, and cousins. Doris St Cyr Clark Clarostat retiree Doris Clark, 75, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at the Riverside Rest Home after a long period of failing health. She was the widow of the late John R. Lark, who died in April of 1993, and a former resident of 130 Colonial Village. She was a long time employee of Clarostat Manufacturing of Dover. She retired in 1986. Services were held at St. Mary’s church, Chestnut St., Dover with The Reverend Fritz J. Cerullo, officiating. Burial followed in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dover Point. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, New England Region, 249 Canal St., Manchester, N.H. 03101 Peter Safchuk Veteran, avid sports fan Peter Safchuk, 82, of Morin St., died Monday September 3, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital. Born in Boston, MA on August 27, 1919, he was the son of Alek and Rose (Boskrupp) Safchuk. He grew up in Peabody, MA where he graduated from high school. He was a former resident of Long Island, NY and Portsmouth, prior to moving here 30 years ago. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed Notre Dame Football. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He then worked as a rigger for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for eight years. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve. He is survived by his wife Mary (Flynn) Safchuk of Dover, a son Peter M. Safchuk of Long Island, NY, a brother William Safchuk of Peabody, MA and a sister Ann Ciman of Peabody, MA and several nieces and nephews. Rubin Jefferson Meeks Jr. Air Force retiree, Mason Rubin Jefferson Meeks Jr., 61, of 544 Sixth St., died Wednesday, September 05, 2001, at his residence after a period of failing health. Born in Dublin, Georgia, May 14, 1940, he was the son of Rubin J. and Emma Lee (Barton) Meeks. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1958 and worked as a materials manager at Textron in Farmington for more than 20 years. He was a Past Master and Secretary of the Strafford Masonic Lodge #29 from 1986-1989 and a member of the Grand Lodge of NH. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force in 1979. Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Lavigne) Meeks of Dover, whom he married August 15, 1964; two sons, Rodney J. Meeks, of Londonderry and Marc J. Meeks, of Fort Collins, CO; two sisters, Margaret Hudson of Port Washington, GA and Etta Higgins of Savannah, GA; two nieces, one nephew; three grandchildren. Nathan Martin Logger Nathan J. “Nate” Martin, 25, of West Gate Apartments, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 in Dover. Born in Dover February 23, 1976, he was the son of the late Roger L. Martin and Mary Ann (Blanchette) Martin. He was a logger and most recently employed by William Hersey of Barrington. He attended schools in Strafford and Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood. Family members include his mother, Mary Ann Martin of Strafford, three sisters, Rebecca A. Martin, Ramona T. Smith of Penacook, and Samantha B. Martin of Strafford; his maternal grandmother, Blanche Blanchette of Manchester, aunts, uncles, four nieces, a nephew, and his girlfriend Abby Monroe of Dover. He was predeceased by his father, Roger L. Martin. A “Time of Remembrance” was held at Tasker Funeral Home with friends and relatives participating. Brittell Veteran, sportsman Elmer R. “Joe” Brittell, 75, of 1 Oxbow Lane, died Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Born in Bristol, VT September 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph Brittell and Hattie (Badore) Brittell Garrapy. Mr. Brittell has been a resident of Dover for the past 45 years, moving here from Portsmouth and, previously, Bath, ME. He was employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a planner and estimator, retiring in 1981 after 34 years of service. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #184 of Dover, the Farmington Rod and Gun Club and was previously a member of Major Waldron’s Sportsmen’s’ Club. Joe was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and boating. He had a great ability at do-it-yourself projects. Family members include one daughter, Cindy A. Pimpis and her husband Robert of Dover; one son, Terrence R. Brittell of Dover; one brother, Dean Garrapy of Reading, VT; a sister, Marguerite Allen of Springfield, VT; two grandchildren, Karen M. Pimpis of Cleveland, OH and Kathleen A. Pimpis of Dover; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Thelma K. Brittell who died August 17, 1987, predeceased him. Services are Friday, September 14 at 1:30 .m. at the Tasker Funeral Home with The Reverend Deacon Ginny Slawnwhite, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Chaplain officiating.
