St. Cyr Veteran, Bow town manager Albert R. St. Cyr, 68, of Rt. 9, Barrington, died Sunday September 9, 2001 at the Hospice House, Concord, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 4, 1933, in Cape Porpoise, Maine the son of Albert St. Cyr and Aurore (Croteau) St. Cyr. He moved with his family to Portland, ME at the age of seven. He attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1952. Mr. St. Cyr served in the National Guard and the United States Army from 1954 to 1957. He graduated from San Diego State University in California with a degree in Public Administration in 1961. There followed an extensive career in city administration in California. He was Assistant City Manager of Mountain View, California for three years. Subsequently, he was Business Manager of Fremont Union High School District and the Palo Alto School District. For three years he was City Manager of Pacifica, California. He worked for both the school systems in East Palo Alto and Las Alto, CA. In 1987 Mr. St. Cyr returned to New England and served for two years as Town Manager of Barrington. In 1989 he became the first and only Town Manager of Bow, where he served until July of 2001, retiring because of ill health. Colleagues described Mr. St. Cyr as a fiscally conservative and socially progressive man who handled local politics with finesse and conviction. Mr. St. Cyr was highly thought of by officials and townspeople alike and will be greatly missed. He was described as a gentleman of character with a great heart. His association with the Town of Bow and its citizens was perhaps the most rewarding for him. He had a special affection for this place and its people. It was a fruitful and happy culmination of a long career. Survivors include his wife, Alberta (Witham) Calef-St. Cyr and his wife, Ann of Dublin, Ohio; a sister, Sylvia A. O’Connell of Portland, ME; several nieces and nephews of Maine; a step-daughter, Andrea Calef Rowell and her husband, Tim of Barrington; two step-sons, William Calef and his wife, Cathy of LeHigh, FL and Jere Calef and his wife, Jane of Barrington. Al was blessed with the addition of nine step-grandchildren including Dustin and Ryan Lester of Dublin, OH, Nathan Conley of Barrington, Arianne Conley of Portsmouth, Josiah Calef of LeHigh, Fl, Kelsey and Alyssa Calef of Barrington, Kristyl Brum of San Jose, CA and Justin Chadbourne of LeHigh, FL. His NH family is truly grateful for the chance to have known him and for the love and care he bestowed on his “Berta”. Funeral Services were held at the Purdy Memorial Chapel September 14. LaPrise Nature, animal lover Robert J. LaPrise, 61, of 43 Channel Lane in Sanford, ME died September 8, 2001 at his residence. He was born in Wellesley, MA on August 26, 1940 the son of Amede “Jack” LaPrise and Emma (Grenier) LaPrise. Robert served in the United States Air Force. He was the vault manager for the Dunbar Co. where he worked for 15 years before his retirement in 1999. Robert was a member of the Beaunegbeg Grange, a canoeist and traveler. He was an avid nature lover, and enjoyed helping injured animals. Along with his mother, Emma (Grenier) LaPrise of Dover, he is survived by a companion, Daniel Huff of Sanford, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul LaPrise and Russell LaPrise. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services were conducted in Winthrop, MA. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Marlee Animal Shelter and Kennels, Boyd Rd., Wells, ME 04090. Arrangements were under the direction of Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Simon G. Markos Dentist, former mayor Simon G. Markos, DDS, 88, of 8 Renaud Ave., died Monday September 10, 2001 at his home following a long period of failing health. Born in Dover July 18, 1913, he was the son of the late George C. and Regina (Polatos) Markos. Dr. Markos was a well respected dentist and community leader for many years. He graduated from Dover High School, Class of 1931. At Dover High School he was a member of the Dover High School “Midgets” basketball team, the first Dover team to win the state championship under Coach Ollie Adams. Dr. Markos was the last surviving member of the team. Following high school he entered the University of New Hampshire, graduating in the class of 1935. Furthering his education, he attended and graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School, Class of 1937. While there he was a member of PSI Fraternity. Dr. Markos entered private practice in Dover in 1937, continuing his practice until 1972 when he retired. During his years of dedicated service to the Dover community he was a mentor to several area dentists with whom he practiced. In 1942, his practice of dentistry was interrupted by WWII. He entered the United States Army Air Dental Corps, serving in Georgia and Ohio. He attained the rank of Major before returning to private practice in Dover in 1946. Dr. Markos served on the New Hampshire Dental Board from 1947 through 1959 and was its secretary/treasurer. He was a member of the Council of National Dental Examiners from 1965-1971 and the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners from 1970-1972. He was past president of New Hampshire Dental Society from 1963-1964 and in 1971 was the second recipient of the MacRury Award, a prestigious honor awarded for his lifetime service to dentistry. He was a member of the American Dental Association, NH Dental Society, and the American College of Dentistry of which he was a member of Gorgas and the Odontological Society. Dr. Markos was the first mayor of Dover under the council/manager form of government, elected by write-in vote, serving from 1948-1949. He was past trustee of the Wentworth Hospital and the Dover Public Library. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation and AHEPA. From 1965-1989, he served as a director of Strafford National Bank. Family members include one son, Peter G. Markos, DO and his wife Debra Learmonth of Dover; two daughters, Aletheia M. Fischer and her husband Albert W. Fischer of Merrimack and Nikki A. Drake and her husband James E. Drake, MD of Williamsburg, VA; one sister Sophie Markos of Dover; two grandchildren, Laura A. Lukan and her husband Patrick A. Lukan of London, England and Haley B. Markos of Dover. Dr. Markos was predeceased by his wife, Roberta E. (Boothby) Markos who died January 23, 1993 and by a brother Basil G. Markos. Private graveside services will be at Pine Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family with The Reverend Arthur Athans, retired priest of the Greek Orthodox Church officiating. Joan Mary Vallee Loving mother, avid bowler Joan Mary Vallee, 62, of 7A Bartlett Avenue, Somersworth, died Thursday, September 13, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born February 16, 1939 in Fort Kent, Maine, she was the Daughter of Albert D. and Delina (Martin) Caron. She was a Somersworth resident for 42 years and last worked about 20 years ago for local shoe companies. She was a loving and caring mother and an avid bowler. Survivors include her husband, Robert R. Vallee of Nashua; one daughter, Debra Arthur of Rochester; one brother, Edmond Caron of Nebraska; one sister, Mrs. Constance Cook of Rochester; five grandchildren, B.J. Arthur, Tyler Arthur, Michael Arthur, Mathew and Amanda Caron, nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Martin’s Church. Burial followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Lindsay, 70, of 549 Sixth Street, died Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born in South Weymouth, MA on September 17, 1930, he was the son of John R. and Margaret E. (Clarey) Lindsay. He was a former resident of California, Ashland, NH and Berwick, ME, prior to coming to Dover 30 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he was a longtime employee of Harris Graphics where he was a supervisor. He was a member of the Masons. A loving husband, Dad, Gramps and Great Grampa – Loved Always, Cherished Forever – he is survived by his wife of 52 years Olive Elizabeth (Guptil) Lindsay, four sons, Bruce C. Lindsay, Jr., and wife Lai of Jacksonville, FL, Wayne R. Lindsay and wife Susan of Barrington, Timothy D. Lindsay and wife Cheryl and Gary J. Lindsay and wife Pamela all of Dover; two daughters, Sharon L. Lehman of Deerfield and Stacey A. Lindsay of Dover and a dear family friend, Linda Clay of Barrington. He also leaves 11 grandchildren: Kenneth Lehman, Lori Carper, Brett Lindsay, Trisha Liebec, Timothy Lindsay, Jennifer MacNeil and Christopher Lindsay all of Dover; Kelley Lehman of San Francisco, Pamela Lehman of Newmarket, Bruce Lindsay, III of Jacksonville, FL and Lindsay Clay of Barrington. Twelve great-grandchildren: Lindsay, Mandy, Craig and Cassy Carper; Shelby and Brian Lindsay; Cierra, Katielynn and Lilly Liebeck; Gabrielle MacNeil; Jake and Madeline Lindsay all of Dover. Also, a brother John R. Lindsay of Port St. Lucie, FL and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A son, Brian D. Lindsay who died October 31, 1980 and a brother Robert C. Lindsay predeceased him. Hill, 88, of Central Towers died Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born in Rollinsford on April 13, 1913, he was the son of Harry S. and Margaret Agnes (Cunningham) Hill and has lived in this area all of his lifetime. He was a graduate of Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine. Dexter began his working career as a mill worker and later worked for the NH State Highway Department. He was a firefighter at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and also served for many years as a call firefighter with the Dover Fire Department. He was a member of the Strafford County Firemen’s Association, the York County Firemen’s Association, the Eagles and the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Dover. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Redden) Hill of Dover, a sister, Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Lang of Dover and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A baby daughter, Sandra Hill, predeceased him. A memorial mass was celebrated September 20 at St. Mary Church and burial is in New Torn Cemetery in Rollinsford.
