Briggs Strafford School employee Georgeanne R. Briggs of 25 Beaver Road, Center Strafford, died at her residence Sunday, September 16, 2001 after a period of failing health. Born October 2, 1944 in Cambridge, MA she was the daughter of Manual and Virginia (Gianetta) Rose. She moved to Ctr. Strafford from Somerville, MA in 1986 and was an employee of Strafford School food service. She was loved dearly by surrounding workers and students at Strafford School. She will be sadly missed by her dear friends, neighbors and relatives after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband David R. Briggs of Center Strafford; two sons, David A. Maloney of Medford, MA and Michael J. Maloney of Marston Mills, MA; one sister, Jean A. McLaughlin of Arizona; one step-son Robert A. Briggs of Fremont; one step-daughter, Dawn E. Nickerson of Somersworth; three grandchildren, Shana and Sophia Maloney and Johnathan Nickerson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, Rochester, with Th Reverend Robert Guilmette as celebrant. Burial followed in Caverly Cemetery, Strafford. Llewellyn Reid Shaw Veteran, shipyard retiree Llewellyn Reid Shaw, 85, 906 Tri City Rd., Somesworth, died Thursday September 20, 2001 at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Born in Boston, MA on April 16, 1916 the son of Earl Brandon and Mary Louise (White) Shaw. He attended schools in Boston and then moved to Newton, NH and resided in Newmarket prior to moving here in 1992. He trained as a toolmaker at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his Naval service he returned to the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard and worked there for a total of 28 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the American Legion Post #51 of Epping and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by a son James Shaw of Byfield, MA, two daughters Mirth Williams of Newton Junction, Susan Flynn of Salisbury, MA, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A brother Eugene Flynn and two sisters Bernice Gaughan and Althea Corrao predeceased him. Funeral Services were from the Tasker Funeral Home with The Reverend James Vreeland, pastor of the Faith Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at the Union Cemetery in Newton. Stanley Sinclair Veteran, volunteer Stanley Sinclair, 70, of 619 Silver Street, Rollinsford, died peacefully at home Tuesday, September 18, 2001 after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Born June 15, 1931 in Dover he was the son of James A. and Eloise (Lord) Sinclair. He was a Dover resident for 35 years and a Rollinsford resident the last three years. He was a graduate of Dover High School, Class of 1949 and received an Associate’s Degree from New Hampshire Tech College, Class of 1958. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy for four years in the early 1950s. He then worked as a quality assurance specialist for the NavSea Command, retiring in 1988 after 33 years. Stanley was a member of Moses Paul Lodge #96 and was a longtime volunteer at My Friend’s Place of Dover. He was an avid walker, enjoyed outdoor sports and cross country traveling with his wife. He was a longtime member of First Parish Church, Congregational of Dover. Survivors include his wife of forty-three years, Eunice (Hilton) Sinclair of Rollinsford; two sons, James Sinclair and his wife, Marcia, of Dover and Nathan Sinclair and his wife, Donna, of Tallahassee, FL; Three daughters, April Sinclair of Somerville, MA, Jennifer Sinclair of Devens, MA and Julia Sinclair of Newmarket; one brother, John B. Sinclair of Lynchburg, VA; a sister, Diane Sinclair of Brighton, MA; two grandchildren, Madeline and James Sinclair; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Marie Miller. Lucille B. Hughes Shoeworker, Moose Lucille B. Hughes, 92, of 149 Portland Ave., died Wednesday September 19, 2001 at Dover Rehab and Living Center. Born in Pittsfield March 30, 1909, she was the daughter of the late William V. and Albertina (Carrier) Riel and moved here 70 years ago. She was a shoeworker employed by Weiss Lawrence Shoe Company for many years. She was a member of St. Mary Church. Mrs. Hughes was a former member of the Women of the Moose and Dover Senior Citizens. Family members include two sons, James E. and Donald R. Hughes of Dover; four brothers, Norman Riel of Riverside, CA, Richard Riel of Salt Lake City, UT, Albert and Paul Riel, both of Pittsfield; two sisters, Jeanette Ankney of Merrimack and Corrine Beaudette of Hemet, CA; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick J. “Pete” Hughes who died in 1958 and by two sisters, Edna Gray and Pauline Bishop. Morse, 77, of 21 Arrowbrook Road, died Saturday, September 15 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born September 5, 1924, he was the son of Frederick and Grace (Johnson) Morse. Mr. Morse was a veteran in the U.S. Army during WW II, a member of the American Legion Post # 8 of Dover and Director of the Residence Association of Anglers retirement community in Paradise, Florida. He was known as “The Good Neighbor,” always willing to help out the residences in both the Paradise, FL community and at the Jenson’s Park in Dover. He was employed by the JD Cahill Company of Hampton, where he was general manager and production manager, retiring in 1988 after 40 years of loyal employment. Survivors include his wife Margaret (Locke) Morse of Dover; one son Malcolm Morse, Jr. of West Yarmouth, MA; two daughters Mrs. Carolyn Morse-Finn of Nottingham ad Mrs. Jacquelyn Greene of Cheyenne, Wyoming; three step-sons Dwight Purington of Epping, Gregory Purington of Nottingham and Bob Stanwood of Knoxville, TN; one step-daughter Mrs. Robin Costello of Biddeford, ME; one brother Frank Morse of Ipswich, MA; three sisters Mrs. Erma Parent of Georgetown, MA, Mrs. Marion Harding of Plaistow nd Mrs. Janice Sabatino of Haverhill, MA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. DeVore, 69 years of East Concord Street died Sunday September 16, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover following a period of failing health. Rita was born in Rochester, November 24, 1931 the daughter of the late Claude and Evelyn (Johnson) Towle. Rita had worked as a waitress at Honeybee Lunch in Dover for many years. She has also been employed at Davidson Rubber in Dover. She is survied by her loving husband John H. DeVore, of Dover. Graveside services were held at Pine Hill Cemetery. Nancy Neal Scroggins DHS graduate, longtime resident Nancy Neal Scroggins, 77, of 8 Valley View Drive, Greenfield, MA, died Wednesday September 19, 2001 at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. Born in Mansfield, Ohio the daughter of Haldiman W. and Helen (McKone) Neal. She was a former longtime resident of Dover where she was a graduate of the Dover Schools and the University of New Hampshire. She later received her Masters Degree in Guidance from Boston University. She taught at the Riverside School in Springfield VT, moved to Northfield, MA in 1961, and then moved to Greenfield in 1969 where she was a school councilor for the Greenfield School Department. She had been active with the Girl Scouts and their Drum and Bugle Corps. Nancy was a former longtime member of the First Parish Church, Congregational of Dover where she was a member of the Glee Club. She is survived by her husband Joel E. Scroggins of Greenfield, a sister-in-law Betty McGrevey of Manchester and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside funeral services were held at Pine Hill Cemetery, Ave T, with The Reverend David L. Slater, minister of the First Parish Church officiating. Olive Guptill Lindsay Loved by many Olive Elizabeth Guptill Lindsay, 68, of 549 Sixth St. died Thursday September 20, 2001 at her home. She will be deeply missed and always remembered by her daughters, Sharon Lehman of Deerfield and Stacey A. Lindsay of Dover; four sons, Bruce C. Lindsay Jr., and wife Lai of Jacksonville, FL, Wayne R. Lindsay, and wife Susan of Barrington; Timothy D. Lindsay, and wife Cheryl and Gary J. Lindsay, and wife Pamela, both of Dover and dear family friend, Linda Clay of Barrington. Also, 11 Grandchildren: Kenneth Lehman, Lori Carper, Brett Lindsay, Trisha Liebeck, Timothy Lindsay, Jennifer MacNeil, and Christopher Lindsay all of Dover; Kelley Lehman of San Francisco, CA; Pamela Lehman of Newmarket; Bruce Lindsay, III of Jacksonville, FL and Lindsay Clay of Barrington. And, 12 Great Grandchildren: Lindsay, Mandy, Craig and Cassy Carper; Shelby and Brian Lindsay; Cierra, Katielynn, and Lilly Liebeck; Gabrielle MacNeil; and Jake and Madeline Lindsay all of Dover. She leaves behind two brothers and two sisters: Donald A. Guptill and Stanley E. Guptill of Berwick, ME; Geneva Bracket of Springvale, ME and Eleanor Hayes of Tucson, AZ and by many nieces and nephews. She now joins in peace her late husband Bruce C. Lindsay who died September 15, and her Son Brian D. Lindsay (1980) and a sister Evelyn Guptill Blair of Plymouth. Services were held at Pine Hill Cemetery. Melanie Sullivan Operator, St. Mary communicant Mary Melanie Sullivan, 87, of 112 Sixth St., died Thursday September 20, 2001 at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center. She was born March 9, 1914 in Somersworth, the daughter of Daniel Francis and Melanie (Wimpheimer) Sullivan and has resided in this area all of her life. She was a graduate of Somersworth High School. For 40 years, she was a telephone operator for New England Telephone and Telegraph where she retired from in 1978. Melanie was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Members of her family include her sister, Alicia Madeline Sullivan of Dover and several cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Doris M. Sullivan and Ruth Frances Sullivan. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, with The reverend Fritz Cerullo, OSA, pastor as Celebrant. Burial followed in the family lot in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somersworth. Vernon Voige Cool Decorated Vet, bowler Vernon Voige Cool, 79, of 16 Eliot Park, died September 15, 2001 at Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center. Born November 22, 1921 in Ilion, NY he was the son of Voige J. and Mable (Reed) Cool. He was a graduate of Ilion High School and attended Syracuse University. A decorated Air Force Veteran of 25 years, he retired at Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, in 1967 as Chief Master Sergeant. During World War II he served with the 8th Air Force in England and during the Korean War with the famed 4th Fighter Group. He married Margaret Drumm of Ilion in 1954. She predeceased him in 1991. Subsequent to his Air Force service, he was employed by the NH Department of Employment Security as an interviewer and veterans’ employment counselor retiring in August 1983. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Second Air Division Association and a life member of Disabled American Veterans. A bowler since his youth, he was a member of the Seacoast Military Retired Bowling League for 14 years. Survivors include his son, Dale Cushman Shepard and his wife, Nancy of Wellington, FL; a beloved companion of nine years, Charlotte Walter of Hampton; an uncle and several cousins. Marion Prosser Thayer Active in school activities Marion Prosser Thayer, 61, of 327 Quarry Rd., Wells, Maine, died Thursday September 20, 2001 at her home after a long battle with cancer. Born in Myersdale, PA on April 10, 1940 the daughter of Addington H. and Pearl M. (Ropickey) Prosser. She was a graduate of the Old Orchard High School and the Portland Business School. After moving to Kittery, ME in 1972, she became involved in school activities. She was also the manager of a retail store for many years. Surviving are her husband of 33 years David A. Thayer of Wells, two sons Rick G. Thayer of Wells, Russell A. Thayer of Kennebunk, a stepdaughter Lori A. Collins of Arundel, a stepson David J. Thayer of Waterboro, a sister Barbara Mileski of Portland, a brother Russell Prosser of Old Orchard Beach, several grandchildren, one great-grandchild, an uncle Stephen “Skeets” Ropickey of PA, a niece and five nephews.
