Kalway Veteran, PD retiree Maurice E. Kalway, 74, of 42 Fifth St., died Monday, December 10, 2001 at his home after a long period of failing health. Born in Skowhegan, ME on March 2, 1927 the son of Alphonso and Amelia (King) Kalway, he was raised and attended schools in Belfast, ME. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. Maurice had been a resident of Dover for the past 52 years and was formerly employed in the local woolen mills and shoe shops. He also worked for Simplex Wire & Cable Company of Newington and Ross Furniture of Dover for more than 25 years. He was a retired member of the Dover Police Department, having served the City from 1960 to 1974. He was a member of the New Hampshire Police Association and the Dover Lodge of Elks, He had a keen interest in automobiles and a special fondness for animals. He was a communicant of St. Charles Church. Members of his family include his loving wife of 56 years Doris (LaBranche) Kalway of Dover; four sons and their wives Ronal and Susan Kalway of Strafford, Eugene and Jean Kalway of Stratham, David and Ann Kalway of Dover, and Richard and Jacqueline Kalway of Barrington; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister Alberina Hartford of Belfast, ME and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, a sister Amelia Grover and a brother Albert Newcomb predeceased him. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, December 12, at St. Charles Church with The Reverend Paul Gregoire as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery. Francis M. Ellis Veteran, Mason Francis M. Ellis, 92, formerly a longtime resident of 4 Prebble Street and lately a resident of 6 Riverwood Circle, Effingham, died Saturday, December 15, 2001 at his home. Born in Dover February 15, 1909, he was the son of Henry and Florence B. (Colomy) Ellis. He moved to Effingham one year ago, having lived in Dover many years and attended Dover Schools. During WWII he served in the United States Army. Mr. Ellis retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Moses Paul Lodge F & AM #96 of Dover, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Nashua and the James Farrington Chapter #7 Order of Eastern Star. Family members include his stepdaughter, Ruth C. Petechik of Effingham; a son, Francis Ellis and his wife Bonnie of Salisbury, MA; grandchildren including Andrea C. Huff of Effingham, Linda E. Levitt of Milton Mills, and Victoria A. Gray of Rochester; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mr. Ellis was predeceased by his wife, Georgia E. (Milne) Ellis who died July 17, 1976 and by a granddaughter Karen L. Fortier and grandson John C. Petechik. Graveside services were December 18 in Pine Hill Cemetery with The Reverend Robert S. Ervin, rector, St. Thomas Church officiating. Interment followed. Arrangements were with Tasker Funeral Home.
