Russell Emerson HAVERHILL, Mass. -- Russell Emerson, 72, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Holy Family Hospital, Methuen, Mass., after a lengthy illness. He was born in Haverhill on the former family farmstead on North Broadway and was a direct descendant of Haverhill's co-founding Emerson family. Mr. Emerson developed the farm into a full-scale dairy operation and became one of the last remaining dairy farmers in Haverhill. He relocated to Fort Plain, N.Y., in 1973 and later to Middletown, N.Y., to continue farming. He retired to North Carolina in 1991 where he lived until recently. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Mebane, N.C., and was a former member of West Congregational Church, Haverhill. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Robinson of Plaistow and Lorene A. Comeau and her husband Peter of Andover, Mass.; four sons and their wives, Russell S. and Barbara Emerson of Franklinville, N.C., Bradley M. and Suzanne Emerson of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Glenn A. and Laura Emerson of Brockport, N.Y., and Dale M. and Robin Emerson of Liberty, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Muriel Davis and Natalie Gagnon, both of Haverhill and Barbara Emerson of West Newbury, Mass.; two brothers, Frederick G. Emerson Jr. of Sandown and Alvan S. Emerson of Haverhill; one sister-in-law, Maralyn Emerson of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday in West Congregational Church, Haverhill. Spring burial will be Hillside Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements were by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, Haverhill. Doris T. Smith KINGSTON -- Doris T. (Tucker) Smith, 96, of Main Street, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Exeter Hospital. She was born in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of the late Arthur and Mildred Tucker. She had resided in Kingston for 39 years and had formerly resided in Newton, Mass. She summered at Kingston Lake since childhood. She was a 1924 graduate of Haverhill High School and of Posse Nisson School of Physical Education in Boston. Mrs. Smith was an assistant orthopedic therapist in the Boston area for many years. She was a dressmaker from her home in Kingston and taught swimming lessons at Kingston Lake for many years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Kingston and was president of the Ladies Friendship Circle. She was a 40-year member of Corinthian Chapter 23, Order of Eastern Star and the organist for the organization for 32 years; a member of the Kingston Planning Board; the Kingston Home Extension; the Kingston Garden Club and president of the Kingston Improvement and Historical Society; and a former member of the Newton Players and was active with the Methodist Church in Newton. Mrs. Smith was instrumental in the formation of the "Golden Girls" and with her late husband was co-founder of the Kingston Community Theater. The widow of Lawrence Smith, she is survived by one son and his wife, Lawrence and Judy Smith Jr. of Kingston; three grandchildren; and six great-granddaughters. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, Kingston. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter. Betty F. Stevens KINGSTON -- Betty Field Stevens, 67, of Main Street, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2000, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 7, 1933, in Canaan, the daughter of the late Raymond and Violet A. (Neil) Field and had resided in Windsor, Vt., moving to Kingston 40 years ago. Mrs. Stevens taught elementary school in Claremont for six years and in Hampton for one year. She was a charter member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Brentwood. She enjoyed fishing the Exeter River, doing puzzles and playing cribbage. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Richard S. Stevens of Kingston; two sons, Richard S. Stevens II of Kingston and Raymond J. Stevens of Shrewsbury, Mass.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Lorden of Boscawen and Judith Dubreuil of North Springfield, Vt.; one brother, Raymond Field of Largo, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at 1 p.m. in Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Brentwood.
