Balkus NEWBURYPORT, Mass. -- Albert P. Balkus, 82, of Merrimac St., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home, Manchester, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 7, 1920, in Lowell, Mass., the son of the late Ipolitas and Veronica (Balcius) Balkus. He was raised in South Boston and lived in Newburyport for many years. Mr. Balkus was a member of the Carpenters Local No. 33 and worked at Filene's in Boston. He was a life member of the North End Boat Club in Newburyport. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy E. (Felch) Balkus of Raymond; two daughters, Carol M. Rogers of Raymond and Dorothy A. Bailey of Epping; five sons, Paul A. Balkus of Haverhill, Mass., David J. Balkus of Newbury, Mass., Michael A. Balkus of Wolfeboro, John J. Balkus of Ashland and William Sturgyn of Amesbury, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Burial was in Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport. John J. Doyle EXETER -- John Jacob Doyle, 46, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002. He was born Jan. 15, 1956, in Lexington, Mass., the son of the late Dr. John and Mrs. Darlene B. (Lackender) Doyle, and was a graduate of Lexington High School. Mr. Doyle was employed by the Exeter Highway Department for 15 years. He was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion and served as District 3 commander of the Exeter Sons of the American Legion. He was recently awarded an honorary lifetime membership in recognition of his many contributions to the organizations. He was an avid golfer. He is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Volk of Franktown, Colo., and Nancy Taylor of Manchester; two brothers, Brian Doyle of Northbridge, Mass., and David Doyle of Manchester; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sons of the American Legion, Lincoln St., Exeter, NH 03833. Roy G. Ferreira Sr. EPPING -- Roy G. Ferreira Sr., 72, of Pleasant Street, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness. He was born Feb. 16, 1930, in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Alfred G. and Jennie (Santos) Ferreira and was a longtime resident of Beverly, Mass., and had resided in Epping since 1964, summering in Beverly. He was a 1948 graduate of Beverly High School. Mr. Ferreira and his father began Ferreira Livestock in the early 1950s in Topsfield, Mass. He moved his farming operation to Epping in 1964 and he continued to run the farm until the mid-1980s. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Natalie E. (Churchill) Ferreira of Epping; three daughters and their husbands, Gloria and John J. Brewitt of Raymond, and Lynne F. and Gary Barrett and Deborah and Jeffrey Liacos, all of Beverly; two sons, Roy G. Jr. and his wife Beth Ferreira of Beverly and Wayne A. Ferreira of Epping; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Idalia Gomes of Beverly; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in St. Joseph Church, Epping. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Epping Ambulance Fund, Main Street, Epping, NH 03042. Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping. David Rankin FREMONT -- David Rankin, 72, of Beede Hill Road, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Exeter Hospital, Exeter, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 1, 1930, in Malden, Mass., the son of the late Albert and Mary (Cunningham) Rankin. Mr. Rankin owned Dave's Gunsmith in Malden, Mass., for many years and was a technician for General Electric Co. in Lynn, Mass. He enjoyed spending time with his family, cars, photography and gunsmithing. He is survived by his wife, Emma Rankin of Fremont; one son, Jonathan Rankin of Fremont; and two daughters, Kathleen Rankin and Maria Rankin, both of Fremont. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Joseph Church, Epping. Burial was in Leavitt Cemetery, Fremont. Arrangements were by Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.
