Dick was born on December 17, 1913 in Colebrook, the son of the late Thomas and Marion Hughes. He was the youngest son in an Irish family of 13. He was graduated from Colebrook Academy and was on the local basketball team, the Colebrook Mohawks. He enjoyed years of skiing, golfing and snowmobiling. He was the proprietor of the Royal IGA grocery store and after retiring, worked for the State of New Hampshire at the local rest area. Dick truly enjoyed his friends and family, and operating a local business. He told many stories, and had many good years. He was a 50-year member of the Masons. Every summer Dick grew a huge vegetable garden at his home on Colby Street, which he shared with friends and family, probably growing the best corn in town. Basketball, and all sports, were an integral part of Dick's life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Alls Hughes; a son, Dr. Philip Hughes of Springfield, Vt.; eight brothers and one sister. Calling hours were held on Sunday evening at the Jenkins Funeral Home. A funeral service was conducted on Monday at the Monadnock Congregational Church, with The Rev. Oliver Northcott officiating.
