THOMAS BARROWS SR. Thomas B. Barrows Sr., 86, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday morning, September 30, 2003 at Country Village Health Care Center. Mr. Barrows was born in Stratford on December 27, 1916, the son of Otis and Alice (Burnside) Barrows. He and his wife Geraldine resided for many years on Grandview Drive in Lancaster. For most of his life Tom worked in the restaurant business. They owned the former Hick's Restaurant in Lancaster for a time but were best known for their many years of service operating the Lancaster Diner. Family members include a son, Thomas B. Barrows Jr. of Big Lake, Alaska; a daughter, Timonee L. Tippitt, of Northumbeland; a sister, Madelene Steelman, of Linwood, N.J.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Geraldine in July, 2002. Visiting hours were held east Wednesday evening at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A funeral service was held on Thursday, October 2 at the funeral home. The Rev. David Pendleton, pastor of the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ, officiated. Burial followed at the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ELSIE HEALD Mrs. Elsie M. (Currier) Heald, 67, of Colebrook, died on Monday evening, October 6, 2003 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital. Mrs. Heald was born on October 5, 1936 in Exeter, the daughter of the late Eugene and Flora (George) Currier. She spent her childhood in Atkinson, N.H., and attended Sanborne Seminary in Kingston. Much of her working career was spent in the cafeteria at the Colebrook Academy. She loved flowers and will be remembered for her love of family. Mrs. Heald is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, George G. Heald of Colebrook; two sons, George J. Heald of Colebrook, and Charles R. Heald of Newington, Conn.; two sisters, Barbara Wildes of Dunnellon, Fla., and Beatrice McDow of Rochester, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Constance Ellis of Waverley, N.Y.; three grandsons, two step-grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Heald is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Forest Currier, and a sister, Naomie Farstead. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 9 from 7-9 p.m. at the Jenkins Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, October 10 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with The Reverend Granvyl G. Hulse Jr. officiating. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NATHAN MCCLURE, JR. Nathan F. "Nate" McClure Jr., 80, of Rockland, Maine, was found dead after a boating accident near Great Duck Island off Bass Harbor on Tuesday, September 30, 2003. Born in Milton, Mass., August 23, 1923, he was the son of Dr. Nathan F. and Gladys McCumber McClure Sr. He was educated in Milton schools, after his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Navy. His naval career spanned 27 years until his retirement in 1965. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. During his military career, Nate particularly enjoyed serving as captain aboard the Naval Tugboat The Wabansee, out of Boston. He was the first non-commissioned officer appointed to teach seamanship at the Officers' Candidate School in Newport, R.I. During that time he re-wrote the seamanship manual being used at that time, and received commission as a Lieutenant Junior Grade . After moving to Maine, he worked as a guard at the Maine State Prison for 10 years and was primarily responsible for the Work Release program established under then-Warden Robbins' leadership. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a friendly, likable person, who was always ready to lend a helping hand. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Atlantic Challenge. His final challenge was the sea he so loved and respected; she reciprocated and returned him back to his loving family. "May you sail forever more and greet each day with your wonderful optimism and fill your heart with the beauty of each starlit night." He will be missed by all who knew him. "The shadows that I feared so long are all alive with light!" stated his wife, Geraldine. Predeceased by two brothers, Norman P. and Peter D., Mr. McClure is survived by is high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Geraldine Roy McClure of Rockland; two sons, Dennis P. McClure of Rome and Nathan F. "Buster" McClure III of South Portland; three daughters, Mary Anne Mongeau of Clarksville, Carol E. McClure of Windham, Maine, and Patricia J. Booth of Newport, R.I.; a sister, Jean M. Mahoney, of Canton, Mass.; a brother, Roy K. McClure, of Buena Vista, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. Raymond, 70, of Penacook, died on Wednesday at the Hospice House in Concord after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Errol, the daughter of Harry and Celia (Glines) Hurlburt, and lived there for most of her childhood before moving to Warner, where she attended and was graduated from Simmonds High School. After graduation she moved to Concord and got a business degree from the Concord School of Business, and lived in Concord until moving in 1964 to Penacook, where she lived and raised her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Raymond, in 1987 and two brothers, Gerald and Quentin Hurlburt. She is survived by a daughter, LouAnn Darling, of Laconia, two grandsons, Daniel and Eian Darling both of Laconia, and a sister, Daphney Godfrey, of Lyman. RELLA SR. Vito E. Rella Sr., 87, died early on Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown. He was born on June 4, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Mauro and Amanda (Gregoretti) Rella. Mr. Rella attended school in Brooklyn and was married to Grace Pavoni November 2, 1940. Soon after graduation from high school, he was employed by the Braun Corporation as a machinist. He worked for that same company right up to his retirement in 1980. After spending time in Colebrook, the Rellas moved here permanently in the spring of 2003. He enjoyed family life and was an avid baseball fan. Mr. Rella Sr. is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Grace Rella of Colebrook; three sons Vito Rella Jr. of Colebrook, Gerald Rella of Bethpage, N.Y., and Joseph Rella of Seaford, N.Y.; a brother, Alfred Rella of Seaford; two sisters, Finn Fiorintino of Port St. Lucy, Fla., and Grace Rella of New York; eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Mr. Rella was predeceased by two brothers, Mauro and Rudolph Rella. Calling hours were held on Tuesday afternoon and evening at the Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Funeral Home. A funeral service, followed by entombment, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Pinelawn Memorial Park and Mausoleums, Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RAYMOND ROCHE Mr. Raymond G. Roche, 66, of Clarksville, died on Monday morning, October 6, 2003 at his residence following a long illness. Mr. Roche was born on August 29, 1937 in Berlin, the son of the late Patrick and Rose (DeLorge) Roche. He was graduated from Notre Dame High School in Berlin in 1957. He was a lifelong resident of the Berlin-Gorham area, working as a bartender for the Joliette Snow Shoe Club in Berlin for 29 years. He retired in May of 1997, and moved to Clarksville. He enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, horseshoes and watching sporting events, particularly the Boston Red Sox. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends and as a gentle, kind-hearted man. Mr. Roche is survived by his loving wife, Judith (Frizzell) Roche of Clarksville; five children, Tia Merrill of Concord, Karen Prehemo of Pittsburg, Elaine Lowe of Berlin, Richard Roche of Berlin and Paul Roche of Nashua; a brother, Louis Roche, of Burbank, Calif.; a sister, Jeanette Vallee, of Somersworth; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Roche is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rene Roche. Calling hours were held on Tuesday evening, October 7 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 8 at 2 p.m. at the Indian Stream Cemetery in Pittsburg, with the Reverend Craig Cheney and Cpt. Ethan Frizzell co-officiating.
