(Locke) Hartshorn LUNENBURG — Rheba C. (Locke) Hartshorn, 88, of Lunenburg, died on Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a resident for two years. She was born at the Lunenburg family farm, the youngest of the “Colby fourteen,” on June 5, 1915, the daughter of Luke and Nellie (Smith) Colby. She attended the Pierce District School, was a graduate of Lancaster Academy, and Lyndon (Vt.) Normal School. While a working as a teacher in Canaan, Vt., she met and married Edward Locke. They had one child, John. They lived many years in New Boston, as Ed was employed in the Manchester area for N.H. Public Service. Rhebas’s interests were to be always involved in the community, and she served in many organizations of that town. Following her husband’s death, she returned to her hometown of Lunenburg to live, and care for her oldest sister, Olive Ball. She also worked as a substitute teacher. She served as Justice of the Peace for many years. Her door was always open to welcome any child or person who needed someone to listen and talk with, and she greeted all newcomers to town. She married Chester Hartshorn in 1977, and they enjoyed being at their cottage at Neals Pond. She and her sister Shirley fished, hunted and scavenger-hunted old dumps. She assisted Shirley and her husband Ern, when their berries and peas were ready for harvest. Living adjacent to the Methodist Church, she committed herself as church caretaker, making sure the heat was on when necessary, providing fresh water at the altar each Sunday for the minister, and preparing for communion on Sundays. Surviving family members include two grandchildren, Aaron Locke and wife Lindsey of Merrimack, and Lisa Locke of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a brother, Howard Colby of Lunenburg; a sister, Rachel Gould of Kingston, Mass.; a cousin, Erma Simonds of the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two husbands and son, John; and in the past six months, sisters, Shirley Peavey and Ruby Beecher; and brother, Ellis Colby. Memorial Services were held at the Lunenburg Methodist Church on July 5, with the Rev. Gerri Piper officiating. Morgan, 81, resident of Silver Lake Road, Hollis died on July 7, 2003 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack. She was born in Stuart, Fla. on January 2, 1922, the daughter of Charles N. and Elizabeth (Newton) Phillips. Mrs. Morgan graduated from the University of New Hampshire and attended the University of Massachusetts. She was a resident of Hollis and Amherst for 60 years. Mrs. Morgan had been employed by Tom Moran Land Survey Company. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Milford, UCC. She served on many committees, including the Church Council, Board of Christian Education and the Diaconate. In addition, she was a member and past president of Laura G. Heald Club, a member of the Souhegan Club, NH Association of American Mothers, Inc., Farm Bureau Associated Women, Abby Sargent Scholarship Committee, NH Circle of Home & Family (Extension Homemakers) where she served as state president and attended several national annual meetings throughout the country. She was also a member of the N.H. Audubon Society and Puritan-Charity Chapter #29, Order of Eastern Star. Later in life, she took up golf and joined Buckmeadow Golf Association and was a member of Hampshire Hills. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, bird watching, being outdoors and traveling to Alaska, Hawaii and the Canadian Rockies. She was a multi-gallon blood donor. Family members include her daughter, Anne Morgan of Lancaster; a brother, John Phillips of Swanzey; two nephews, David Phillips of Glenville, N.Y., and Bruce Phillips of Thornwood, N.Y. Mrs. Morgan was pre-deceased by her husband Charles F. Morgan who died in 1991. There are no visiting hours. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, July 19th at 10 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Milford, Union Street, Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Heifer Project International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203; or to the charity of one’s choice. Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford is in charge of arrangements. Virginia D. E. Turner JEFFERSON – Virginia D. E. Turner of Jefferson, passed away on Saturday July 12, 2003 at the Coos County Nursing Hospital, West Stewartstown. She would have been 91 on July 21st. “Ginny” was born in Liberty, Maine, the daughter of Leonard and Ora (Newhall) Clark. Mrs. Turner worked at Spalding Inn for 22 summers in many capacities and tended the Spalding family in the winters. She worked at the Mountain View for 10 years before becoming a homemaker. She enjoyed trying new recipes. She and Arnold had large gardens each year and enjoyed canning the fruits oftheir labor. Mrs. Turner was a devout Christian lady who loved to help others. She was also a great animal lover. Family members include her husband of 50 years, Arnold K. Turner of Jefferson; a daughter JoAnn Garland Dobson Pearce of Lancaster; three grandsons, Kenneth Dobson Sr. of Jefferson, Vernon Dobson of Alna, Me., Frederick Dobson of Wiscasset, Me.; a granddaughter, Dareleen Dobson of East Boothbay, ME; 10 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and infant son Larry Garland in 1931; two sisters, Arlene Harriman of Brunswick, Me. and Beatrice Freeman of Whitefield. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon July 16, at 1 p.m., at the Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster. Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Bentum, pastor, will officiate.
