Frederika (Alexander) Burrows WEST HYANNISPORT, Mass. — Frederika (Alexander) Burrows, 94, of West Hyannisport, Mass., died on June 16, 2003 at Cape Regency Nursing Center in Centerville, Mass. Born in Montpelier, Vt., she was educated in Whitefield and received a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College, where she attained honors in psychology. She taught French and Latin at Princeton High School and was a substitute teacher for several years at St. Johnsbury Academy. Mrs. Burrows married Ronald Burrows in 1930. She and her family moved to Scituate, Mass. in 1945, where she was president of the Scituate Garden Club and Green Thumb. In 1968 they moved to West Hyannisport. She was a member of the Professional Writers of Cape Cod, the National League of American Pen Women, and the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills. She was a writer and member of Twelve O’Clock Scholars and is published in their Cape Cod Sampler and Cape Cod Sampler II. She authored several books, including The Yankee Scrimshanders, Cannonballs and Cranberries and Windmills on Cape Cod and the Islands. Mrs. Burrows was a reporter for National Antiques Review from 1972-1976 and had articles published in several magazines, including “Good Housekeeping” and “Yankee.” Survivors include two daughters, Martha Jane Curtis and Roberta A. Gough, both of Centerville, Mass.; two grandchildren; a niece and two nephews. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to Centerville Library, Main Street, Centerville, MA 02632. Randall Dana COLUMBUS, Ohio — Randall Dana, 58, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at the Arthur G. James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio. He was born on August 5, 1945 in San Diego, Calif., the son of Patricia P. and David S. Dana. Mr. Dana began his lifelong career of service to others by becoming an Eagle Scout. His high school education was at the Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Va. and he attended Denison University before receiving a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science from The Ohio State University in 1968. Following graduation, he entered the United States Army and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After serving a tour of duty in Korea, he was discharged in 1971. He served with the 73rd Infantry Brigade in the Ohio National Guard from 1975 to 1981, and served his last five years prior to retirement assigned as a reserve officer in the Selective Service System, retiring with the rank of Major. Mr. Dana graduated from Capital University Law School in 1974 and worked as a city prosecutor in the Columbus City Attorney’s office before entering private practice in 1975. He had a general practice in Columbus until 1979 when he became Vice-president and General Counsel to the American Bank of Central Ohio, which later merged with Society Bank. In September 1981 he was appointed the Ohio Public Defender. He served in that position until 1992. He supervised a staff of 160 attorneys. He was noted for organizing the most effective death penalty defense section in the country and leading his staff to five victories in the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Dana returned to private practice in Columbus as a partner in the law firm of Dana & Pariser. He was also the owner of Dana Aviation Ltd., which is a new and used aircraft dealer. Being active on national and local levels, Mr. Dana was a member of numerous organizations to include the American Bar, Ohio Bar, Columbus Bar Associations, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Presidents Club of The Ohio State University and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was Chairman of the Ohio Bar Association, Special Subcommittee to Advise the Ohio General Assembly on Sentencing Legislations in 1981, and Secretary of the Criminal Justice Committee, Ohio State Bar Association 1978-1980. He became Chairman of the Defense Services Committee, American Bar Association in 1986 and Legislative Issues Committee, National Legal Aid and Defender’s Association. Mr. Dana was a member of the Franklin County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board and had been a member since 1997. In addition he was active at Little Turtle Country Club, the Athletic Club of Columbus, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, Inc., Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association and Seaplane Pilots Association and other various aviation organizations. He is survived by Nancy, his loving wife of 26 years; sons, Christopher McLaren and Kitty and Randall M. and Melanie, and daughter, Allison, and grandson David Randall, all of Columbus; his mother, Patricia P. Dodd of Perrysburg, Ohio; his father, David S. Dana and Elaine of Whitefield; a brother, Charles M. and Jacqueline of Columbus; sisters, Deborah Heuga of Colorado, Stephanie Stranahan and Duane of Montana and Amy Dana and Joe Profaci of Connecticut; many nieces and nephews; and his pal, Gus, the dog. Fontaine WEST STEWARTSTOWN — Simone M. Fontaine, 92, died on August 5, 2003 at Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown. She was born on July 1, 1911 in Three Rivers, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of Maxime and Vitaline (Tremblay) Grenier. Mrs. Fontaine attended school in Canada. She moved to the United States in 1935, traveling to Massachusetts, where she worked many years in clothing manufacturing. She married Emile Fontaine on August 2, 1957. She and her husband retired and moved to West Stewartstown in 1985. Family members include five sisters, Yvette Ricard of West Stewartstown, Pauline Grenier of Shawigane, Quebec, Canada, Janine Grenier, Francis Grenier and Pierette Aubrey, all of Three Rivers; two brothers, Lucien Grenier and Henri Grenier, both of Three Rivers; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband predeceased her in 1995. Calling hours were held on Thursday, August 7 at Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, August 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Brendan Church in Colebrook with the Rev. Albert Bellefeuille officiating. Burial followed in St. Brendan Cemetery in Colebrook. Evelyn M. (Gervais) Garand EAST CONCORD, Vt. — Evelyn M. (Gervais) Garand, 62, of East Concord, Vt., died on Friday morning, August 8, 2003 after a lengthy illness. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt. on February 10, 1941, the daughter of Edward and Marjorie (Smith) Gervais. She married Roland Garand on June 12, 1959. Many will remember Evelyn as a waitress at Archie’s Bakery and coffee server at Dunkin’ Donuts in St. Johnsbury where she worked a total of 16 years. Evelyn was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Theresa’s Church in Gilman. She loved her family and friends and she loved to go camping and fishing. She is survived by her husband, Roland of East Concord, Vt.; three daughters, Theresa Silver and husband Doug of Hill, Patricia Simon and former husband Socrates, both of Manchester, and Pamela Jean Simonds and husband Dan of Lunenburg, Vt.; five grandchildren, Jamie Glum, Kayla Gros-Jean, Stephanie Gros-Jean, Jessica Simonds and Daniel R. Simonds; one great-grandson, Levi; two brothers, Edward Gervais of San Antonio, Tex., and Darell Gervais and wife Gerri of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; three sisters, Yvonne Eastman and husband Reggie of Herman, Me., Irene Smith and husband Francis and Pauline Miles and husband Philip, all of Concord, Vt.; cousins, nieces and nephews; and the Garand family. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Paul and Robert Gervais; and one sister, Shirley Gervais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 13 (today) at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church in Gilman. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There were no visiting hours. Gielar PITTSBURG — Fred S. Gielar, 77, of Route 3 and formerly of Newmarket, died on August 5, 2003 at Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook, after a brief illness. Born on July 29, 1926, in Newmarket, he was the son of John A. and Mary A. (Polchlopck) Gielar. He lived most of his life in Newmarket and had lived in Concord and Hopkinton. Mr. Gielar served in the Army during World War II. He was a 19-year member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post 67 in Newmarket. He enjoyed playing golf. He worked for Public Service of New Hampshire for many years, working his way up to supervisor. He retired in 1986 and moved to Pittsburg. He was also a life endowment member of the National Rifle Association. Family members include a daughter, Nancy Eaton of Madbury; a son, John T. Gielar of Troy; five grandchildren; a brother, Louie Gielar of Newmarket; and one niece. There were no calling hours. A funeral prayer service was held on Friday, August 8, followed by an American Legion Service at the Kent, Pelczar Funeral Home in Newmarket. Burial followed in Cavalry Cemetery, Newmarket. Raymond A. Kozlak MILAN — Raymond A. Kozlak, 71, of 90 Lang Road, passed away in the presence of his wife and daughter, Tuesday evening, August 5, 2003, at the Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster. Mr. Kozlak was born in Torrington, Conn., on November 13, 1931, the son of August and Catherine (Bednarcik) Kozlak. Raised in Torrington, he was a longtime resident there and was employed as an operating engineer in building construction. For many years he worked for O & G Industries. He also had a love for rebuilding cars. He has resided in Milan for the past 10years. For a time he served with the United States Air Force and was a member of the International Union Operating Engineers Local #478 and the National Rifle Association. Family members include his wife Barbara Ann (Richard) Kozlak of Milan; a daughter Debra A. Vellucci and son-in-law Ray of Brownfield, Maine; and his very dear life long friends. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday afternoon at St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton. The Rev. Daniel Deveau, pastor, officiated. His ashes will be interred in the columbarium at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, at a later date. Howard Clayton Potter GROVETON — Howard Clayton Potter, 91, of West Street in Groveton died on August 9, 2003 at Country Village Genesis Health Care in Lancaster, following a lengthy period of declining health. Born in Groveton on September 4, 1911, the son of Clayton J. and Stella (Masure) Potter, he was a lifelong resident of Groveton and a graduate of Groveton High School, Class of 1929. He married Ruth E. Bailey on September 29, 1934; they would have been married 69 years this year. Howard was an active member of Groveton United Methodist Church and Methodist Men. He was an active member of Gilkey Lodge 101 F&AM of Groveton and the Odd Fellows. A member of Cape Horn, Groveton and Stratford Grange, he received his 75th year certificate in 2002. He was a very hard worker, enjoying his garden and he also drove school bus in order to stay busy. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Groveton Papers as a printer. Howard is survived by his wife, Ruth Potter of Groveton; a daughter, Mrs. John (Bethany) Ober of Tewksbury, Mass.; a brother, J. Richard Potter and wife Harriette of Groveton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four nephews and one niece. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Joan Kipp (a long-time teacher of Groveton Elementary School) and two sisters, Dorothy Potter and Donna Young. Calling hours were held on Tuesday at Main-Armstrong Funeral Home with a Masonic service in the evening. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 13 (today) at 2 p.m. at Groveton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peter Parent officiating. Burial will follow at the Northumberland Cemetery. Thurston, 89, of Errol, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2003 at the Country Village Center in Lancaster. Mr. Thurston was born on April 7, 1914, in Errol, the son of the late Dwight and Lena (Olson) Thurston. He worked on the family farm at an early age and supplemented the family income as a bookkeeper for C.R. West, Inc. and also by ice fishing. He was the last official meter reader for Errol Power Company and after 33 years of employment with the New Hampshire Highway Department, he retired as a road patrolman. He was an active member of Evening Star Lodge #37 F. & A. M. and the Bektash Temple. He was a founding member and past-president of the Umbagog Fish and Game Club. He was also a lifetime member of the Aziscoos Grange. He held various offices in the Errol Congregational Church and will be remembered for his skills as a hunter and fisherman. Mr. Thurston is survived by his two sons, Ralph Thurston and wife Jone, of Wells, Me., and Paul E. Thurston and Dianne Ingalls of Lancaster; his daughter, Frances Sytek and husband Dick, of Colebrook; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eunice M. Thurston, on September 27, 2002, a brother Gerald Thurston, and a sister Marion Carey. Calling hours were held on Thursday, August 7 at the Jenkins Funeral Home. Private Masonic Services by Evening Star Lodge #37 F. & A. M. were also held at the funeral home. A funeral service was held on Friday, August 8 at 2 p.m., with Pastor Larry Clough officiating. A private family interment followed at the Errol Village Cemetery.
