Boyce Jr. LANCASTER — Russell N. Boyce Jr., 60, died on August 12, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster following a battle with cancer. He was born on August 27, 1942 in Norwood, Mass., the son of Russell and Ethel (Wagner) Boyce Sr. He resided in Newport, Vt., for more than 20 years and then moved to New Hampshire where he spent seven years in North Stratford and his last year in Lancaster. He was a meat distributor in Massachusetts and Newport, Vt. for many years and for the past several years he owned and operated R.N. Boyce Computers in North Stratford. He was president of the Northwoods Future Millionaires, a micro credit group. He was a member of the Androscoggin Valley Railroad Association. He was a train buff and loved the railroad, including model trains. Family members include two brothers, Richard Boyce of Whitman, Mass. and Robert Boyce of Brockton, Mass.; a companion, Drusilla “Dru” Ayers of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews. Henry, 76, of Ridgeview Terrace, died on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon. Mrs. Henry was born in Freeport, N.Y. on August 27, 1926, a daughter of George and Hazel (Smith) Wright. She was a longtime resident of Freeport working for a time as a bookkeeper for a local radiology firm. In 1980 she moved to Whitefield after her husband’s retirement. There she was employed for a time at the Highland House providing homemaker service. Family members include her husband, Raymond A. Henry Sr. of Dalton; a daughter, Linda Reinhart of Londonderry; two sons, Raymond A. Henry Jr. of Whitefield, and Gary Henry of Spokane, Wash.; a brother, Emory Wright of Wilmington, N.C.; three sisters, Edna Millang of Florida, Ruth Sodaitis of Las Vegas, and Joan Holmes of Florida; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held Thursday morning, August 21, from 10 to 11, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Park Street Cemetery, Whitefield. Robert L. Humiston MILAN — Robert L. Humiston, 84, of 16 Slippery Hill Road, died on August 13, 2003 at his home. He was born on June 20, 1919 in Watertown, Conn., the son of Warren Glenwood and Jessie (Booth) Humiston. Mr. Humiston resided in Connecticut until 1977 when he moved to Milan after his retirement from Southern New England Telephone Company, where he was employed for 31 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was active in many different capacities with the Boy Scouts, was a member of the Milan United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Milan Volunteer Ambulance Service. Family members include his wife, Elsa (Holm) Humiston of Milan; two sons, Carl Warren Humiston of Omaha, Neb., and Robert George Humiston of North Ogden, Utah.; three daughters, Else Maria Smith of Algood, Tenn., Betsy Booth Foster of Thomaston, Conn., and Karen Agnes Mizell of Ladson, S.C.; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours were held on Monday at the Bryant Funeral Home in Berlin. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at the Milan United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Milan. Memorial donations may be made to the Milan Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to the Milan Village School Library Fund. Rosalie S. Hurlbutt DEERFIELD — Rosalie S. Hurlbutt, 64, died at her home on August 15, 2003. She was born in Rumford, Me. on Sept. 2, 1938, the daughter of Lester and Selma (Shaw) Jamison and lived in Groveton before moving to Deerfield in 1960. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Hurlbutt was self-employed as a certified nursing assistant for 17 years. She enjoyed reading and crocheting and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family members include her husband of 42 years, Gardner Hurlbutt; three sons, Donald Hurlbutt of Deerfield, Leslie Hurlbutt of Florida and Michael Hurlbutt of Manchester; a daughter, Selma Bartlett of Littleton; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Buddy Merchant and Charlie Jamison, both of Manchester; several nephews, nieces and a cousin. Geraldine Judson WEST MILAN — Mrs. Geraldine Judson, 76, of Milan, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. She was born on July 13, 1927 in Berlin, the daughter of Samuel F. and Marjorie (Harriman) Hodgdon and lived most of her life in West Milan. For many years, she was involved in West Milan community activities including the West Milan Fireflies. She was associated with the West Milan Fire Department, the Milan Voter Checklist, was a Sexton for the Riverside Cemetery and was also an auxiliary Milan Police Officer. Members of the family include her husband, William H. Judson of West Milan; two sons, Henry Judson and wife Debra of Stark, and William “Woody” Judson of Albion, Me.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Judson of Stark, and L/CP Joshua Judson, USMC, stationed in Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Samuel F. Hodgdon Jr. of Moultonboro; one sister, Patricia Hodgdon of Montana; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a son, Gerald Judson. Marion E. “Pug” Mooney CONCORD, Vt. — Marion E. “Pug” Mooney, 67, died at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital on Wednesday, August 13, 2003. She was born in St. Johnsbury on May 16, 1936, the daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Broughton) Mooney. Survivors include a brother, Melville and wife Arda Mooney of Lunenburg, Vt.; a sister, Marie Mason of Concord, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Theodore Mooney, a sister, Laura Carpenter, and her very special friend of many years, Ralph “Red” Burt. Graveside services were held on Sunday, August 17 at Grove Cemetery in East St. Johnsbury, with the Rev. Lynn Burgess officiating. Shurbert Sr. LACONIA — Frederick “Fred” M. Shurbert Sr., 80, of 34 Taylor Home Drive, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Wednesday, August 13, 2003. Mr. Shurbert was born April 7, 1923 in Boston, Mass., the son of Henry and Minnie (Routch) Shurbert. He was raised in North Falmouth and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1940. He spent over three years in the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant and an instrument specialist in England during World War II. He owned Lakes Region Disposal, Lakes Region Transit School Buses for 35 years in the Lakes Region and Baker’s Dozen Coffee Shop. Mr. Shurbert lived in Gilford for most of his adult life and was involved in the community, serving as a selectman, fire engineer, and a member of the Gilford Police Department. He proudly transported the children of Gilford for 32 years on his school buses. He was a member of the National School Bus Association and served on the Board of Directors. He received the Gold Medal Merit Award twice and was the fifth member to be elected to NSTA Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of the New Hampshire School Transportation Association, first president and treasurer for many years. Mr. Shurbert served on the Laconia Salvation Army Advisory Board for many years, was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce and director and president of the Lakes Region Management Club. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion, the Masons and the Scottish Rite, past district-governor of Rotary and a 36-year member of the Laconia Rotary Club and respectfully known as “Mr. Rotary” where he served as president and secretary for many years. Recently, Mr. Shurbert served as president of the Ledges Association of Taylor Community. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Coutermarsh) Shurbert of Laconia; four children, Susan and her husband Ed Tenney of Colebrook, Cynthia and her husband Dr. Robert Lobel of East Greenbush, N.Y., Frederick Jr. and his wife Katrina of Gilford, and William and his wife, Joanne of Pittsfield; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a brother Richard Shurbert and a grandson Carter Hans Lobel, both in 1985. A memorial service was held at the first United Methodist Church in Gilford on Monday, with the Rev. Victoria Wood Parrish, pastor, officiating. He was born in Littleton on April 13, 1933, the son of Davila and Florence (Sharman) Tardiff. Mr. Tardiff attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Littleton. He served as a rifleman in the U.S. Army. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Lisbon and was employed by the Plymwood Furniture Company, Connors Shoe Company and, most recently, by the Grove Hill Cemetery. He married his wife, Bette, on April 28, 1956. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Family members include his wife of 47 years, Bette (Wells) Tardiff of Lisbon; three sons, Lawrence David Tardiff, Harold Keith Tardiff and Rodney Joseph Tardiff, all of Lisbon; one daughter, Deborah Jean Hill of Pike; two brothers, Albert Tardiff and David Tardiff, both of Lisbon; one sister, Patricia Benoit of Greenfield; and four grandchildren. A graveside committal service will be held on Saturday, August 23 at 10 a.m. in Grove Hill Cemetery in Lisbon, with the Rev. Fr. Daniel Sinibaldi officiating.
