Barrows Sr. LANCASTER — Thomas B. Barrows Sr., 86, died on Tuesday morning, September 30, 2003, at Country Village Health Care Center. Mr. Barrows was born in North Stratford, on December 27, 1916, the son of Otis and Alice (Burnside) Barrows. He and his wife Geraldine resided for many years on Grandview Drive in Lancaster. For most of his life Tom worked in the restaurant business. The couple owned the former Hick’s Restaurant in Lancaster for a time but were best known for their many years of service operating the Lancaster Diner. Family members include a son, Thomas B. Barrows Jr. of Big Lake, Alaska; a daughter, Timonee L. Tippitt of Northumberland; a sister, Madelene Steelman of Linwood, NJ; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Geraldine in July of 2002. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday evening, October 1, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service was held on Thursday afternoon, October 2, at 1 at the funeral home. The Reverend David Pendleton, pastor of the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ, officiated. Burial followed in the Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. Joyce S. Cushman GILMAN, Vt. — Joyce S. Cushman, 65 of Gilman, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at her home. She was born in Brownington, Vt., on July 19, 1938, the daughter of Francis and Lavinia (Lafond) Leonard. She worked as a CNC operator at FCI Burndy’s in Littleton, N.H. for 27 years. She also worked as a nurses’ aid in Franconia for seven years and she worked closely with her brother Benny Leonard and his wife Muriel at his auction barn in Lyndonville for many years. Her husband, James A. Cushman, predeceased her. She is survived by her mother, Lavinia Tatrault of Dabury, Fla.; her four children Randy Leonard of Thomaston, Me., Kim Carpenter of Gilman, Jeanne Page of East Ryegate, Sandra Tobyne of Lunenburg; her sister, Becky Bjorstad of Cedarville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Muriel Leonard and family of Island Pond; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services were held at Lyndonville United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 4, with the Rev. Barbara Dwyer officiating. Burial was in St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Pearsons Funeral Service, 70 Church Street, Lyndonville. Margaret “Peggy” Kauppinen DURHAM — Margaret “Peggy” Kauppinen, 90, formerly of 67 Madbury Road, died on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at the Pines of Newmarket. Peggy was born in Jefferson on January 9, 1913, the daughter of Alexander J. and Annie J. (McLaughlin) Rhome. She was graduated from Jefferson High School in 1931 and from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) in 1935. She taught at Jefferson High School for two years and earned her master’s degree in history from UNH in 1940. Later, she was Graduate Assistant for the UNH History Department and served as secretary to the Dean of Men and Women from 1940 to 1944. Peggy was a member of the 100-Club of UNH, the American Association of Retired Persons, the American Red Cross, and of the Church of St. Thomas More. She was the widow of Tenho S. Kauppinen who died in 1976 and is survived by a sister, Isabel R. Roy of Dover and several nieces, nephews and cousins here in the USA and Ireland. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 9 at St. Mary New Cemetery, Dover Point Road, Dover, with the Rev. Daniel St. Laurent, pastor of the Church of St. Thomas More, officiating. Friends are invited. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St. Thomas More at a later date and time to be announced. Seminatore, 68, died on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Mr. Seminatore was born on August 10, 1935 in Medford, Mass., a son of Christina Surrett Seminatore and Gerald F. Seminatore. He attended Boston University and was graduated from St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. He received a Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. A retired Navy Lieutenant, he taught school in Groveton, N. H. and in later in Hampton, S.C. In the 1960s Mr. Seminatore bought an ice cream stand on Route 2 in Lancaster, N.H., and built it into the Prospect View truck stop and restaurant, which he owned until the late 1980s. Survivors include his wife, Dianne Nelson Seminatore of Beaufort; a son, Gerald Seminatore of California; two daughters, Catherine Seminatore of Brattleboro, Vt., Linda Seminatore-LaFerriere of Hudson, N.H.; five sisters, Marie Seminatore, Marjorie Seminatore, Helen Seminatore, Barbara Seminatore, all of Burlington, Mass. and Loretta Levasseur of Laconia, N.H.; and one grandchild. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, September 30 at Copeland Funeral Home in Beaufort. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, October 1, at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. Clarence T. “Coo” Vashaw LANCASTER — Clarence T. “Coo” Vashaw, 91, of Williams Street Apartments, died at his home on Tuesday, September 30, 2003. Mr. Vashaw was born in Berlin, on February 7, 1912, the son of Theodore and Zella (Morin) Vashaw. He was a longtime resident of Lancaster. At one time worked for the local A & P and for many years he delivered milk for the Marshall Farm Dairy in Northumberland. He was also a former caretaker of All Saints Church and Calvary Cemetery. He was active in church functions often calling bingo. He enjoyed card playing and was an avid bowler. He will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor. He was a Communicant of All Saints Church and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Family members include two daughters, Barbara Jane Lapete of Whitefield, and Marie Anne Barber of Orange Park, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Leola Sheptor of Lancaster; and a half brother, Richard Tripps of Largo, Florida. He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite “Peggy” Cusson on March 23, 1994, and a brother, Randall Vashaw. Visiting hours were held on Thursday afternoon and evening, October 2, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday morning at 10 at All Saints Church, Lancaster. The Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster.
