Daigle JEFFERSON — Eugenie M. Daigle, 89, formerly of North Road, died on Wednesday evening October 8, 2003 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, after a long illness. Mrs. Daigle was born in Ste. Henidine, Quebec on December 31, 1913 the daughter of Jules and Zerila (Bedard) Bilodeau. One of 16 children she was raised in Canada and moved to Bristol, Connecticut in 1937. In 1948, she took up residence in Jefferson where she and her husband Antonio Emile Daigle operated a farm. She resided there for 53 years until she moved to the special care unit at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in July of 2000. Over the years Eugenie had raised 93 foster children, five to adulthood. She devoted her life to her family and had a warm spot for children. She was also a Communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Jefferson. In 1993 she was Jefferson’s citizen of the year. Family members include seven sons, Roger J. Daigle and Louis J. Daigle, both of Jefferson, Denis J. Daigle of Littleton, Richard J. Daigle of Burlington, Vt., David G. Fortin of Long Island, N.Y., Stephen Rodger of Barre, Vt., and David A. Chase of Littleton; four daughters, Aurore M. Hood and Connie M. Patnoe, both of Lancaster, Lorraine J. Patnaude of Jefferson, Carlene L. Abbott of Littleton; 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1989 and a daughter, Wendy L. Doyle in 1993. Visiting hours were held on Friday afternoon and evening, October 10, at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, Lancaster. Reverend Raymond Ball officiated. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the Special Care Unit, Coös County Nursing Hospital, PO Box 10, West Stewartstown, NH 03597. Gloria A. Green LANCASTER — Gloria A. Green, 77, died on Friday afternoon, October 10, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, after a long illness. Mrs. Green was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt. on September 9, 1926, the daughter of Sydney and Aurora (Vermette) Collins. She was raised in St. Johnsbury and Groveton. For 50 years she resided in Lancaster, at one time operating Layne’s Supermarket with her first husband Layne Gathercole Sr. For approximately 12 years she was the deli clerk at Shop & Save in Northumberland. She retired in 1980. Family members include her daughter, Nancy Robinson of Franklin; a brother, Francis Collins of Portland, Me.; a sister, Claire Vermette of Whitefield; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Layne Gathercole Sr.; her second husband, Linwood “Joe” Green; two sons, Steven Gathercole, and Layne Gathercole Jr; and a sister, Mary Villeneuve. Visiting hours were held on Sunday, October 12, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service was held on Monday, October 13 at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Bentum, pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. Ralph Albert Hammond MONROE — Ralph Albert Hammond, 94, of Monroe, died on October 10, 2003 at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill. He was born in Colebrook on August 15, 1909, the son of Albert and Rosa (Knapp) Hammond. Raised in Colebrook, he moved to Monroe in 1945 where he was a self-employed dairy farmer until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Hammond received numerous agricultural awards in recognition of his progressive farming practices. He played a strong role in the community as a member of the Monroe Fire Department and the Monroe United Methodist Church and Men’s Club. Mr. Hammond was generous with his time and support of 4-H, school, band and neighbors. One could always count on Ralph to be there. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Althea (Riley) Hammond, whom he married on October 9, 1934; six daughters, Gloria Moore, Edith Craig, Virginia Cinnamond, and Barbara Farr, all of Monroe and Phyllis Keenan of East Ryegate and Mary Hatch of East Berkshire; 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; a sister, Valaria Clark of Corey, Penn.; two nieces and two cousins. There were no calling hours. A funeral service was held on Monday, October 13 at the Monroe United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Hanson officiating. Christine Manning PORTSMOUTH — Christine Manning, 65, died at home in Portsmouth from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, October 11, 2003, while surrounded by her loving family and friends. Christine was born in Oquosoc, Me. on Feb. 5, 1938, the daughter of Fulbert and Alice Caron. On June 8, 1957 she married Francis Manning of Island Pond, Vt. Christine was a quality control supervisor at Ethan Allen Furniture in Orleans, Vt., where she retired in 1995. She was active in various community organizations in Island Pond, Vt. In addition to her husband Francis, Christine is survived by her four children, Gregory G. of Phoenix, Ariz., Tammie G. and Kathryn J. of Portsmouth, and John F. of Marysville, Oh.; and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by Hector Caron of Bloomfield, Vt., Raymond Caron of Centerville, Ia., Roland Caron of Groveton, Marcel Caron of Phoenix, Ariz., Theresa Lavoie of Island Pond, Vt., Jackie Lakin of Orleans, Vt., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Emilian Caron, Lucille Shaw and Jean LaPerle. Calling hours were held on Tuesday at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Island Pond, Vt. Funeral services will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 15 (today) at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. William Morgan celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Donations in Christine’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Tapping Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Gordon E. Penney OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Gordon E. Penney, 69, died unexpectedly on September 8, 2003 in Oklahoma City. He was born in Berlin, N.H. on September 18, 1933, a son of Edward and Effie Wood Penney. A 1951 graduate of Gorham High School, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1955. Mr. Penney’s career was dedicated to highway engineering, including more than 30 years of service to the Federal Highway Administration before starting Penney Engineering in 1989. At the time of his death, Mr. Penney was the chairman of the Oklahoma Highway Users Federation and he served on the board of directors of the organization for the past 13 years. He was also a member of the Oklahoma Historical Society, ASCE, ACI and OTEA. He was an Eagle Scout and an Order of the Arrow member and was an active leader with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 111 and 64. A devoted husband and dedicated to his family, he will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched. Family members include his wife, Barbara (Andrews) Penney; two daughters, Christa P. Sawyer of Oklahoma City, Tamara Haas of Santa Fe, N.M.; two sons, Timothy Penney of Washington, D.C., and Andrews (Andy) Penney of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Penney of Kingston, N.H., and Susan Martel of Center Strafford, N.H.; four brothers, Francis Penney of Atkinson, N.H., James Penney of Randolph, N.H., Peter Penney of Clovis, N.M., and Christopher Penney of Goffstown, N.H.; nieces and nephews. A private memorial Mass was celebrated on September 12 at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. Raymond G. Roche CLARKSVILLE — Raymond G. Roche, 66, of Crawford Road, died on October 6, 2003, at his residence following a long illness. Mr. Roche was born on August 29, 1937, in Berlin, the son of the late Patrick and Rose (DeLorge) Roche. He was graduated from Notre Dame High School in Berlin in 1957. He was a lifelong resident of the Berlin-Gorham area, working as a bartender for the Joliette Snow Shoe Club in Berlin for 29 years. He retired in May 1997, moving to Clarksville. He enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, horseshoes and watching sporting events, particularly the Boston Red Sox. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends and as a gentle kindhearted man. Family members include his loving wife, Judith (Frizzell) Roche of Clarksville; five children, Tia Merrill of Concord, Karen Prehemo of Pittsburg, Elaine Lowe of Berlin, Richard Roche of Berlin and Paul Roche of Nashua; a brother, Louis Roche of Burbank, Calif.; a sister, Jeanette Vallee of Somersworth; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, October 8, at the Indian Stream Cemetery in Pittsburg, with the Rev. Craig Cheney and Captain Ethan Frizzell co-officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Jenkins Funeral Home, Colebrook. Harry B. Wilson CONCORD, Vt. — Harry B. Wilson, 59, of Concord, Vt., died on Friday, October 10, 2003 at the Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lyndon, Vt. He was born on April 7, 1944 in Concord, Vt., the son of James Edward and Marian (Howard) Wilson. Harry served in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict, and he worked as a carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Jolita G. Wilson; three sons, Shilo S. Wilson and his wife Nicole, Shane S. Wilson, and Charles Wilson, and a daughter, Kelly Wilson, all of Concord, Vt.; a brother, James Wilson; three sisters, Sherri Johnson, Ginger Hudson, both of Concord, Vt., and Linda Silsby of Lunenburg, Vt. Family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Sayles Funeral Home, St. Johnsbury, Vt.
