Benedict JEFFERSON — William E. Benedict, 70, of Turnpike Road, died on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Country Village Genesis Eldercare, Jefferson, after a long illness. Mr. Benedict was born in Port Jervis, N.Y. on August 22, 1933, the son of Sylvester and Mary (Fiese) Benedict. He devoted forty years to the Air Force as a flight instructor. Twenty-two years were active duty. He retired from the military as a Major in 1993. He was also employed for over 25 years at the Groveton Paper Mill. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping and farming. Family members include two sons, William L. Benedict of Jefferson, and Steven L. Benedict and his wife Dorie of Chardon, Ohio; three daughters, Terri Ploss and husband Mark of New, Boston, Debbie Dudley of Somersworth, and Toni Robbins and husband Bert of Derry; a sister, Madeline Hubbard of Pulaski, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, Naomi, Whitni,Taylor, Tucker, Jake and Angie. His wife, Carolyn J. (Kirchner) Benedict died in 1998. and a brother. B. Case Benedict of Syracuse, N.Y., also died previously. A visitation time will be held on Saturday morning, Dec. 6, from 11 to 11:30 at the Lancaster Assembly of God. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 following the visitation. Officiating will be Kevin Horion of the Bethel Assembly of God. Military honors will follow the funeral service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. Edward W. “Frenchy” Benoit GROVETON — Edward W. “Frenchy” Benoit, 75, of Brooklyn Street, died surrounded by his family on Nov. 24, 2003 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon after a brief illness. He was born on August 27, 1928 in Stewartstown, a son of Hector and Florence (Thibeault) Benoit. Frenchy had been a resident of Groveton since 1962, coming from Stewartstown. Before retiring in 1991, he worked for 25 years for James River Paper Company in Groveton. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. He loved to “travel around” from Groveton to Lancaster and sometimes as far as Colebrook. Frenchy loved visiting with friends and family and having his coffee breaks. The family includes his wife of 49 years, Simone A. (Dube) Benoit of Groveton; four daughters, Pauline Gibbs of North Stratford, Noella Begin of Lancaster, Diane Brooks of Clarksville, and Lucille Cunningham of Canaan, Vt.; four sons, Raymond Benoit and Dennis Benoit, both of Groveton, Andre Benoit of Lunenburg, Vt., and Daniel Benoit of Lancaster; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Rose Breault of Maine, Irene Jeffers of Colebrook, Palmyra Dube of Milan, Aleda Maurais and Agnes Brooks, both of Canaan, Vt. A grandson, Jeremy Begin, a brother, Leon Benoit, and a sister, Germaine Caron, died previously. Calling hours were held on Nov. 30 at the Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, Dec. 1 at St. Francis Xavier Church, with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster. Memorial donations may be made in Frenchy’s name to St. Francis Xavier Church, 10 State Street, Groveton, NH 03582. Carlos M. Calderon Jr. LANCASTER — Carlos M. Calderon Jr., 56, of Robin Lane, died on Thursday evening Nov. 27, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. Carlos was born in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 24, 1947, the son of Carlos M. and Kathleen (Cerra) Calderon Sr. He was raised for a time in Puerto Rico later moving with his family to Connecticut where he was a graduate of Cheshire Academy. He attended college in Ohio until volunteering for the Army and serving in the Vietnam War. He had several occupations during his life including sales representative, shipping manager, and U.S. Postal clerk. For the past seven years he had been residing in Guildhall, Vt., remodeling a home he had purchased there. He had lived with his parents in Lancaster during his illness. Carlos had traveled around the world. He was an avid reader and enjoyed music, especially jazz. Family members include his parents of Lancaster; a sister, Elsa Calderon and her husband Paul Thomas of New Haven, Conn.; and a niece Katie. There were no visiting hours. A memorial service was held on Saturday morning Nov. 29, at 11 at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. David Pendleton officiated. Kingsley MANCHESTER — Wallace B. Kingsley, 80, of 290 Merrimack Street, died on Nov. 23, 2003 at Catholic Medical Center. He was born on April 26, 1923 in Lancaster, the son of Alpha and Anna (Dwyer) Kingsley. Mr. Kingsley lived most of his life in Lancaster. He had been a resident of Manchester for the past year. He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He owned and operated a gas station in Lancaster and also worked for Township until his retirement. The family includes a son, Gary Kingsley of Manchester; a daughter, Caradawn Mipolski of Cambridge Springs, Penn.; five grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Helen Alberta Smith Nadeau LANCASTER — Helen Alberta Smith Nadeau, 91, died on Monday evening, Nov. 24, 2003, at Country Village Health Care Center. Mrs. Nadeau was born on Sept. 21, 1912 “out east” on the Brook Road, Lancaster, the youngest of three girls born to Maude S. Greenwood Smith and Harley A. Smith. Helen was graduated from Lancaster Academy and went on to school at Fletcher Allen Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington, Vt., receiving her RN. When WWII broke out she enlisted in Army Nurses Corp. Five years were spent in England, Scotland and France, as a Second Lt. In France, Helen was a front line evacuation hospital nurse and was awarded the Bronze Star for the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning home she married the love of her life, Francis X. Nadeau, also of Lancaster. They had planned to wed before the war but were forced to postpone their wedding for five years while both served their country. Helen continued her career in nursing at the B.D. Weeks hospital until 1972 when she and Francis retired. She loved being outdoors and the two of them fished many of the remote ponds in northern New Hampshire and Vermont with their faithful Airedales. Quebec and New Brunswick were also favorite fishing destinations with friends. She completely enjoyed the family camp on Maidstone Lake, often getting up while everyone slept to catch lake trout for the breakfast meal. She had extensive knowledge of nature and loved sharing it with friends. Her favorite flower was the Pink Lady Slipper. Helen had lived at Country Village Eldercare Center since 1987. Her husband, Francis, grandson Benjamin Nadeau, and sisters Eva Gadwah and Cecilia Bitzell died previously. Family members include her two daughters, Irene B. Nadeau of Guildhall, Vt. and Zelda F. Gonyer of Lancaster; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren. There are no visiting hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. (Champagne) Poulin ISLAND POND, Vt. — Eugenie L. (Champagne) Poulin, 99, of Island Pond, Vt., formerly of North Stratford, died on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 at the North Country Hospital in Newport, Vt. Mrs. Poulin was born on Nov. 15, 1904 in St. George, P.Q., Canada, a daughter of Gedeon and Marie Champagne. She was a homemaker and worked as a cook in the logging camps with her husband, Willie Poulin. She was also employed at the plywood factory in North Stratford for a number of years. She loved to cook and also enjoyed playing bingo and cards. She will be remembered fondly for her famous homemade beans and for her love of family and family gatherings. The family includes five children, Lawrence Poulin and his wife Saba of Florida, Rose Morris of Goffstown, Anita King and her husband Jim of Island Pond, Vt., Frances Tetreault and her husband Richard of North Stratford, and Joseph “Tippy” Poulin of Glastonbury, Conn.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Her loving husband, Willie Poulin, two daughters, Rita Platt and Denise Curtis, an infant son, five brothers and four sisters died previously. Calling hours were held on Nov. 28 at the Jenkins Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in North Stratford, with the Rev. Daniel Deveau as celebrant. An interment service followed at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in North Stratford. Rainault, 54, of Fellows Road, lost her life in the line of duty on Nov. 24, 2003 in Lunenburg. Ruby was born in Elkhart, Indiana, on July 14, 1949, a daughter of Walter and Dorothy (Conaway) Daum. Raised in Indiana, she resided there until 1980 moving to Randolph, N.H. In 1989 she moved to Guildhall, Vt., where she had been an Essex County Deputy Sheriff for the past five years. Ruby had also taught aerobics and was a line-dancing instructor. Her favorite activities were motorcycling and snowmobiling. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Lancaster. Family members include her husband Gilbert Rainault of Guildhall; three sons, Jason Rainault of Colebrook, N.H., Benjamin Rainault of Laconia, N.H., and Travis Rainault of St. Johnsbury; three daughters, Angel Rainault of Newport, Amanda Kelly Rainault of Groveton, N.H., and Amanda Ariel Rainault of Guildhall; and two sisters, Marilyn Glassburn and Deborah Snell both of Indiana. Calling hours were held on Friday afternoon and evening, Nov. 28, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster, N.H. A funeral service was held on Saturday at the Lancaster School auditorium. Officiating the service were Tom Jackson and David Coombs. A reception was held at the Guild Hall in Guildhall. Kathryn Star Simonson LOUNDRES, Costa Rica — Kathryn Star Simonson, 58, of Loundres, Costa Rica, died on November 24, 2003. She was born in Roslyn, N.Y., on November 24, 1945, a daughter to Stanley and Ellen Mittleman. Kathryn was graduated from Hofstra College on Long Island, N.Y. earning a B.A. with honors. Later she became an L.P.N. after attending the N.H. Technical College in Berlin. She was employed, for a time, as a nurse at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. In the last several years she had worked in Costa Rica on environmental projects. She also escorted groups through the rain forest areas near Quepos, C.R. on horseback. Kathryn was an exceptionally fine horsewoman, winning many Blue Ribbons in Green Hunter Jumping and Dressage events. She was very active in stimulating forest conservation activities and in transmitting the knowledge and beauty of flora and fauna of Costa Rica to tourist groups. Family members include her parents, Stanley and Ellen Mittleman of Dalton, N.H.; children Frank and John Meisse and Shoshana Simonson of California and Oregon; a brother, Dr. John Mittleman of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Nancy Ann Stiffler of Newport Ore.; and one grandson Elijah Meisse. A memorial service was held at a beautiful waterfall near Loundres where her ashes were scattered. Her ashes were carried to the service on a white horse with a white saddle. Her service was attended by her children, her sister, and the townspeople. Dorothy (Nute) Whitcomb LANCASTER — Dorothy (Nute) Whitcomb, 84, formerly of Mann’s Hill Road, Littleton, died at the Country Village Center on Nov. 29, 2003, after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Littleton, she was born on May 11, 1919, the daughter of John and Nellie (Heald) Nute. She was a loving and dedicated homemaker for her family. She was employed at Cannon Mountain Ski Area while her children were growing up and later worked at the Littleton Coin Company until retirement. She was a lover of cats. The family includes two sons, Bryan P. Whitcomb of Breckenridge, Colo., and Robert J. Whitcomb of Littleton; a daughter, Susan Sliwoski of Rochester; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Daniel P. Nute of Littleton; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Henry F. Whitcomb Jr. and a son, Gary O. Whitcomb died previously. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.
