Anderson AMESBURY, Mass. - Walter Leslie Anderson, 85, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Harborside Healthcare Center. He was born May 14, 1917, in Amesbury, the son of the late Christian A. and Ethel M. (Burrill) Anderson and attended Amesbury schools. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Panama, CZ, Oklahoma, Fort Monmouth, N.J., and in the European Theater. He was a staff sergeant with the 9th Division of Company C, 60th Infantry. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the World War II Victory medal, the American Defense medal, the Good Conduct medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the American Theater Campaign ribbon, and the Combat Infantry medal. He was a radar crewman, an expert field marksman, and an expert TSM gunner. Following his discharge, he served with the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Anderson retired from the Raytheon Corp. in 1978 and was previously employed by Henschel Corp. and the Bailey Corp. He was an active member of the American Legion; was the post commander of the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 13 of Exeter; and served as quartermaster of the Amesbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2016. He organized and participated in many Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day services and parades. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gloria Bogannam of Kingston, Leslie and Steven Chunn of New Boston and Denise and John Recupero of Amesbury; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Eleanor Anderson of Hampstead, Bertha Wolfsen of North Hampton, Lois Giufridda of Exeter, Beatrice Brown of Seabrook and Barbara Comeau of Haverhill; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Robert, Norman, Frank, Francis and Allan; and four sisters, Annie, Marjory, Ethel and Christine "Hazel" Sharkey. Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Amesbury. Burial was in Mount Prospect Cemetery, Amesbury. Memorial donations may be made to the DAV, Post 13, Exeter, NH 03833. John F. Corcoran HAMPTON - John Francis "Jack" Corcoran, 64, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at his home. He was born Sept. 7, 1938, in Arlington, Mass., the son of the late Francis and Margaret (Magee) Corcoran. He was raised in Cambridge, Mass. He attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School where he excelled as a scholar and track athlete. He was a 1961 graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, where he received his bachelor of science degree in business administration. He served with the U.S. Army Reserves in 1961 stationed at Fort Benjamin in Harrison, Ind. Mr. Corcoran was a sales representative for Schering-Plough, retiring in 1995 with 30 years of service. He was an avid recreational athlete, running road races and playing tennis and golf. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriots, attending many of their games. He was a fan of the Boston College Eagles football team, holding season tickets and following the Eagles on the road. He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading and history and was known for his skill in trivia contests. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Charlotte (Coughlin) Corcoran; four daughters and their husbands, Helen and Christopher Dugan of Hooksett, Jacqueline and Alistair Sawers of London, England, Kathleen and David Gaudet of Georgetown, Mass., and Kristin and Brian Sirois of Newton; one son and his wife, Charles and Deborah Corcoran of Hampton; nine grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Maninos of Malden, Mass.; and three nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial was in High Street Cemetery. Dow, 86, formerly of Whittier Drive, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Exeter Healthcare. He was born June 8, 1916, in Seabrook, the son of the late Harry and Bertha (Caswell) Dow. He attended Seabrook schools and Amesbury (Mass.) High School. Mr. Dow began his career with the Hampton Fire Department as a call man in 1964, becoming a permanent firefighter in 1965. He became a lieutenant in 1970, retiring in 1978. He had previously been a bedlaster in area shoe shops for many years. Following his retirement, he continued work as a commercial lobster fisherman and a manufacturer of lobster traps. Even after giving up his lobster boat he continued to build traps until the age of 80. The widower of Evelyn (Dobson) Dow, his wife of 51 years who died in 1987, he is survived by one son and his wife, Alfred N. Jr. and Barbara Dow of Hampstead; one daughter and her husband, Willie and Ed Chouinard of Seabrook, with whom he made his home for 12 years; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Lola Cronin and Caroline Dow. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. Miller, 79, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center in Haverhill, Mass., following a brief illness. He was born May 13, 1923, in Haverhill, the son of the late Emile and Nathalie (Girard) Miller. He attended St. Joseph Grammar School and was a 1941 graduate of Haverhill High School, where he was a member of the baseball team and was the recipient of the James E. Mansfield Trophy as the most valuable player. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 505th MP Battalion in the European Theatre and was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Miller was employed by AT &T Technologies, North Andover, Mass., in plant security, retiring in 1990 after 35 years of service. He was a member of All Saints Parish of Haverhill and of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He played on several semi-professional baseball teams in Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley; was an avid golfer and bowler and was a member of area leagues. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie (Mosher) Miller; one daughter, Jeanne Boyle of Derry; one son, James E. Miller of Longmeadow, Mass.; two grandchildren; one sister, Therese Goodwin of Haverhill; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Armand Miller. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in All Saints Church, Haverhill. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements were by Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, Plaistow. Gerald J. Newnan KINGSTON - Gerald J. Newnan, 85, of Main Street, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at SunBridge Nursing Home, Exeter. He was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Chelsea, Mass., the son of the late Sam and Catherine (McQuillan) Noonan(this s correct). He resided in Connecticut for many years moving to Kingston eight years ago. He was a 1938 graduate of Chelsea High School. Mr. Newnan owned and operated an art studio in Connecticut. The widower of Pearl Newnan, he is survived by two daughters, Judy May Sheehan of Revere, Mass., and Geraldeen Ryan of Saugus, Mass.; four grandchildren; one nephew, Dan Linehan of Danville; and a close friend, Florence Sawyer of Atkinson. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. She was born March 19, 1923, in Salem, Mass., the daughter of the late Frank L. and Margaret (Martin) Peters. She resided in Beverly, Mass., for many years moving to Raymond eight years ago. Mrs. Richards was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Epping, and was a member of the Ray-Fre Senior Citizens in Raymond. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ernest A. Richards Sr. of Raymond; one daughter, Kathleen M. Phipps of Wilbraham, Mass.; one son, Ernest A. "Bud" Richards Jr. of Raymond; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarke F. Peters of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, Frank Peters, Edmund Peters, Roy Peters and Joseph O’Brien. (Hannigan) Savage, 92, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Epoch Nursing Home in Melrose, Mass. She was born Oct. 30, 1910, in Exeter, the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Hughes) Hannigan and was a lifelong resident of Exeter. She was a 1928 graduate of Robinson Female Seminary and a 1932 graduate of the University of New Hampshire. Mrs. Savage taught at the Newton Junction Village School from 1969 until her retirement in 1976. She began her teaching career in 1959 teaching first grade at St. Michael’s School in Exeter. She was previously employed by the Exeter Handkerchief Factory and worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II. The widow of James H. Savage, she is survived by one son, Thomas P. Savage of Melrose; one daughter-in-law, Jacqueline D. Savage of Melrose; one granddaughter; and one sister, Margaret O’Connor of Virginia. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary McNulty and Catherine Cavanaugh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 21, at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. Taylor HAVERHILL, Mass. - Reba Cogswell Taylor, 94, of Penacook Place, died Saturday, April 12, 2003. She was born in Richmond, Va., and was raised in Haverhill. She was a graduate of Haverhill High School and attended Burdett School of Business, Boston. Mrs. Taylor was employed by the Atherton Furniture Store and Western Electric. She was active with the Blind Guild of Haverhill for many years; was a member of the Haverhill Garden Club; and was the former president of the Client’s Council at Penacook Place. She served as a volunteer ambulance driver during World War II and taught rug braiding and crafts. The widow of E. Fernald Taylor, she is survived by two sons and their wives, David and Bonnie Taylor of Kingston and Norman and Linda Taylor of Haverhill; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by one daughter-in-law, Charlene Taylor. Memorial services will be held at Penacook Place at a later date.
