Bernier EXETER - Jean Althea Bernier, 83, of RiverWoods Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at the Lodge at RiverWoods. She was born March 1, 1920, in Norwell, Mass., the daughter of the late Leon and Florence (Merritt) Hatch. She was a longtime resident of Pembroke, Mass., and had resided in Scituate, Mass., before coming to Exeter three years ago. She was a graduate of a Norwell high school. The widow of Oscar J. Bernier, who died in 1968, she is survived by one son, Robert Carleton of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Norma Jean Carleton of Weymouth, Mass., and Susan Derrickson of East Hampstead; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Olive Martin of Brockton, Mass. Memorial services were held Monday in the Great Room at RiverWoods, Exeter. Burial was in Centre Cemetery, Pembroke. Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter. Eda E. Carvotta LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Eda E. Carvotta, 81, of Olympus Avenue, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in Mountain View Hospital in Nevada. She was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Everett, Mass., the daughter of the late John and Barbara (Ferrandi) Ricci and had resided in Danvers, Mass., and Atkinson, before moving to Nevada five years ago. She was a graduate of Salem High School. Mrs. Carvotta and her husband owned and operated the Carpet Warehouse in Salem. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Pascal F. Carvotta Sr. of Las Vegas; two sons, Joseph A. Carvotta and Pascal F. Carvotta Jr., both of Las Vegas; one daughter and her husband, Donna and Howard Moulton of Newfields; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Elsie Mirabito of Malden, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one daughter, Marianne Carvotta. Calling hours will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at noon in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. Burial will be in Plaistow Cemetery, Plaistow. (Smith) Duffy, 74, of 231 Oak Ridge Road, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Lynn, Mass., and had resided in Newton before moving to Plaistow 15 years ago. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Lynn. Mrs. Duffy was a bookkeeper at the former Custeau’s Supermarkets in Plaistow and East Hampstead and retired from Shaw’s Supermarket in Plaistow in 1998. She was a member of Holy Angels Parish of Plaistow and served as the treasurer of the Sanborn Youth Hockey League for many years. She is survived by two sons, Timothy J. Duffy of Atkinson and James J. Duffy and his wife Karen of Sandown; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Peggy Andreas of Boston, Eileen Haynes of Manchester, Catherine and Mark Flyzik and Nancy and Dennis Doucette, all of Plaistow; 15 grandchildren; one brother, James Smith of Castro Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Jenny Curran of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Patricia Schimoler of Stratham; one aunt, one uncle and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son, Daniel J. Duffy, who died in 1993. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. Lawrence O’Brien, 80, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at Mariner Healthcare, Methuen, Mass. He was born March 11, 1923, in Townsend, Mass., the son of the late Alfred L. and Helena K. (Moore) O’Brien and had resided in Derry since 1992, formerly living in Medford, Mass. He was a graduate of Gordon College of Theology and continued his studies at Eastern Nazarene College. He received his advanced theology degree from Boston University School of Theology. As a United Methodist minister, Rev. O’Brien was appointed to churches in Charlton City, West Fitchburg, Maynard, Whitinsville, Needham Heights, Hamilton, Wilmington and Medford, Mass., and East Hartford, Conn. He is survived by his wife, Marion (Miners) O’Brien of Derry; four daughters, Linda Bennett of Whitinsville, Carol Boudreau of Atkinson, Jacqueline O’Brien of Allenstown and Dawn O’Brien of Maine; five grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Frazier of West Brookfield, Mass.; and one nephew. Funeral services were held Wednesday in St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Derry. Burial was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody, Mass. Welch RAYMOND - Neal F. Welch, 66, of Main Street, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born July 14, 1937, in Exeter, the son of the late Ai S. and Josephine (Fernald) Welch and was a lifelong resident of Raymond. He was a 1956 graduate of Raymond High School and served with the U.S. Air Force from 1956 until 1960. Mr. Welch began working at Ai S. Welch and Sons Oil Co. in 1960 and eventually became the owner of the business. He also owned and operated the bus service for the Raymond school system and enjoyed driving the buses for more than 30 years. He was a truck driver for Coastal Materials in Raymond for nine years. He was a member of the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years before retiring as captain. He served two terms as a selectman and was a member of the Recreation Board and the Cemetery Committee. He was a charter member of the Raymond Area Rotary and was involved with the local Youth Athletic Association for many years as a baseball coach and umpire. He enjoyed spending time with his family vacationing at Wells Beach or Monheagan Island, Maine, Myrtle Beach, S.C. and taking day trips to the beach; square dancing, bowling and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Inez (Smith) Welch of Raymond; one daughter and her husband, Alison and Randy LaCasse of Raymond; a daughter-in-law, Melynie Welch of Concord; two grandchildren; two brothers, John "Jack" Welch of Newburyport, Mass., and Joseph Welch of Nottingham; three sisters, Ardell Welch and Betsy Peterson, both of Raymond, and Robin Proulx of Nottingham; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, David N. Welch, who died in 2002; and one brother, Frederick S. "Ted" Welch. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, On the Common, Raymond. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Raymond Congregational Church, Church St., Raymond, with the Rev. Neil Iverson officiating.
