RUTH BAGLEY Ruth (Currier) Bagley, 81, of Lebanon, died on Saturday morning, December 27, 2003 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon following a brief illness. Mrs. Bagley was born Ruth Martha Currier in Pittsburg on April 14, 1922. She was raised and graduated from high school in Pittsburg, then went on to complete nurse's training at Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, Mass. She joined the Army Nursing Corps in 1944 but was forced to leave the service by a serious illness in 1945. She returned to Pittsburg, where she was married to Guy A. Bagley of Waterboro, Maine in 1948. The Bagleys lived in Petersham, Mass., and Acton, Mass., before retiring to Orange, N.H., in 1976. Mrs. Bagley moved to Lebanon after her husband¹s death in 1989. Ruth and Guy Bagley began to study drawing and painting together shortly after their marriage, and both worked as graphic artists throughout their lives. Mrs. Bagley is survived by her son, Mark Bagley of Grafton; her daughter, Kristin Rose of Lebanon; and five grand- children. Private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. The Ricker Funeral Homes & Crematory of Lebanon assisted with arrangements. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PORTER COVELL Porter F Covell, 95, of New Durham, died on Sunday, December 28, 2003 at his niece¹s home after three years of failing health. Born on September 30, 1908 in Colebrook, he was the son of the late Osgood and Elma (Ferrol) Covell. Mr. Covell had lived in New Durham for three years after having moved from Derry, where he lived for 22 years, and Boston for 43 years. He was employed as an accountant for H.P. Hood for 41 years until his retirement in 1965. He attended Northeastern University, where he took accounting classes part-time. He enjoyed playing bridge for many years. Members of his family include his daughter, Margaret Evans and her husband William of Rockland Mass.; his sons, John F. Covell of Alton and Paul A. Covell of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Grace (O¹Leary) Covell, and two sisters. There were no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the family's convenience. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home in Rochester. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEORGE KLINEFELTER George R. Klinefelter, 69, a Vermont native and a resident of Swanton since 1970, died on Thursday, January 1, 2004 following a brief illness. Born in Brattleboro on March 1, 1934, he was the son of John R. and Albina (Bergeron) Klinefelter. George was a graduate of Canaan Memorial High School and received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Vermont in 1959. George's long career in law enforcement began in 1960, when he became an inspector for the Customs Service; his first assignments were in Montreal, Quebec, St. Albans and Newport. During this period he took a post in Vietnam as the Public Administration Advisor to the Vietnam Customs Service, first from 1967-68 and again in 1971. In 1970, George transferred to Rouses Point, N.Y., where he became a Special Agent for the Customs Service. George also worked with the Drug Enforcement Agency and the then Customs Patrol on the northern border. In 1986, he moved to Ottawa, Ontario, where he became the Customs Representative in the attaché¹s office at the U.S. Embassy. During his career, George also developed and instructed courses at both the U.S. Customs Academy and the Canadian College of Law Enforcement. Upon his retirement in 1990, George returned to UVM and in 1992 received his master's degree in public administration. He went on to serve as interim chief of police for the Town of Milton and as a partner in K&R Associates, Private Investigation Consultants. For the past eight years, George has remain-ed very active as an independent contractor to the U.S. government, conducting training seminars in foreign countries. During his many years of service, George was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Presidential Letter and the Commissioner's Citation from the U.S. Customs. In addition to his professional life, George was very involved in civic and community activities, volunteering for Samaritan House and the Court Diversion Program in St. Albans, serving on the Swanton Planning commission, the Swanton Town/Village Merger Committee, and as a Justice of the Peace in Franklin County. He was a member of Masonic groups in the Northeast Kingdom and of the American Legion Post in Canaan, and belonged to many government organizations. An avid sailor and skier, George was a 25-year member of the U.S. Ski Patrol, serving at Jay Peak. He faithfully served his country in the Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956. George is survived by his children, John Klinefelter and his wife Carrie of Bakersfield, Karen L. Klinefelter and her partner Sam Norris of Burlington and California, and Alan Klinefelter and his wife Kim of Highgate Springs; two grandchildren; his loving companion, Pauline Chatelle of Montreal and Swanton and her children and grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John O. and Marion Klinefelter of Guildhall and Les and Patricia Klinefelter of St. Simons Island, Ga.; his former wife, Phyllis Klinefelter of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. George also leaves his constant companion, Bill the dog, now residing in Highgate Springs. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 7 at 2 p.m. at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in Alice Hunt Cemetery in Canaan. Friends called at the Kidder Memorial Home on Tuesday evening, January 6. ST. HILAIRE Maurice O. St. Hilaire, 82, of Berlin, died on January 1, 2004 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, where he had been residing. He was born in Plessisville, Quebec, on December 26, 1921, the son of Emile and Marie Anna Nadeau St. Hilaire. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. He was employed with the James River Corporation as a foreman, retiring in 1985. Prior to working with James River, Mr. St. Hilaire was part owner of the Berlin Chrysler/Plymouth dealership, where he was president of the service manager's association department. Mr. St. Hilaire was a past president of Kiwanis, a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2520, assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205, and had served on the St. Regis School Board and the Diocese of Manchester School Board. The family includes his wife of 57 years, Eva Jutras St. Hilaire of Berlin; two sons, Richard St. Hilaire of Franklin and Mark St. Hilaire of Shelburne; daughter, Susan Pember of Norfolk, Mass.; two brothers, Jean-Paul St. Hilaire of Lebanon and Robert St. Hilaire of Nashua; a sister, Yvette Ouelette of Florida; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours were held on Sunday at Fleury-Patry Funeral Home in Berlin. A Mass of Christian burial with military honors was celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish.
