ALBERT BERRY Mr. Albert O. Berry, 87, of Pittsburg, died on Tuesday evening, May 25, 2004 at the Golden View Healthcare Center in Meredith. Mr. Berry was born on July 6, 1916, in Wolfeboro, N.H., son of the late Albert O. Berry Sr. and Edith (Whitehouse) Berry. A grandson of the founder of O.P. Berry Excelsior Company of Wolfeboro Falls, N.H., Mr. Berry was a graduate of Austin-Cate Academy, Class of 1933. He served in the Navy during World War II, in the 134th Naval Construction Battalion Sea-Bees in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945. After leaving the service, he worked for the Town of Meredith, and harvested ice from the lakes. His other forms of employment included logging, landscaping and owning a small trucking firm during the 1950s and '60s. He also owned and operated Berryıs Fuel Company in Meredith until his retirement in 1982. A year before his retirement he moved to Pittsburg, and had been a resident of that town since 1981. Mr. Berry was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and also loved to fish; he particularly enjoyed deep-sea fishing, which he did for over 73 years. As a young man he was a member of Demolay and during the 1950s was a member of Red Men. He was a member and Past Noble Grand of Belknap Lodge #14 I.O.O.F.; member of the VFW Post of Ashland, and of the George L. O'Neil American Legion Post #47 of Colebrook. He was a member of the National Cribbage Club and the Cribbage Cohorts of Colebrook, and a lifetime member of the Sea-Bee Veterans of American Island X-4 of Laconia. Mr. Berry is survived by his son, Gregory F. Berry and his wife, Jackie, of Meredith; a brother, Francis Berry of Northfield, N.H.; a sister, Clara Louise Philbrick of Concord; and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Terry D. Berry. There will be no calling hours. Private family services will be held at a later date. EASTMAN GRAVESIDE SERVICE A graveside committal service for Miss Julia E. Eastman, 85, who died on March 10, 2004, will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 5, at 1 p.m. at the Colebrook Village Cemetery. ROBERT HUGHESE Robert T. ³Bob² Hughes, 88, of Berlin, died on Saturday evening, May 29, 2004 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. Mr. Hughes was born in West Warwick, R.I. on December 15, 1915, the son of John and Clara (Morris) Hughes. He was graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1939 and moved to Berlin, where he began a 43-year teaching career in the Berlin Public Schools. In acknowledgment of his enormous impact on the high school art department, Mr. Hughes was officially recognized by the State of New Hampshire as "Teacher of the Year" in 1975. In the 1960s, he worked as a graphic designer and found himself the recipient of numerous awards and commissions, from then until the present. These include being a John Hays Fellow, Rhode Island School of Design's Alumni of the Year in 1989, and the Governor's award as New Hampshire's Living Treasure in 1991, as well as being featured on the New Hampshire Crossroads and in the video, "The City that Trees Built," a documentary about Berlin. Throughout his career, Mr. Hughes has been an active participant in many local art celebrations including the White Mountain Art and Music Festival which he helped found, and the North Country Chamber Players Summer Festival and Music in the Schools programs. Although primarily a sculptor, Mr. Hughes has worked in all mediums, including woodcuts and design. His works are also on display in the Concord State Library, the Living Treasure's Gallery and private galleries and homes. He has commissioned works in the New Hampshire State Prison and the Coös County Court House, as well as other public spaces in New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He had a one-man show at Urban Architecture in New York City in June and July of 2000, and his most recent show was during May, 2001 at Artspace in Birmingham, Mich. In 2002, Bob was chosen as one of the artists from New Hampshire to design an ornament for the White House Christmas tree. He and his wife attended a reception at the White House in December honoring the artists. Bob has just finished a large bird mobile for the new Veterans' Home in Tilton, and it was installed in the autumn of 2003. His design was chosen as part of the Percent for Art program. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member Good Shepherd Parish. Members of the family include his wife Marie (Malvaso) Hughes of Berlin, a teacher at Stratford Public School; a daughter, Sharon Kruger and her husband Jurgen of Cossayuna, N.Y.; a son, Kevin Hughes and his wife Margy of Fairhaven, N.J.; a granddaughter, Patricia Whittemore and her husband Andy of New Jersey; a grandson and a nephew. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann (Duggan) Hughes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning, June 3 at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends called at the Bryant Funeral Home, in Berlin on Wednesday evening. KING JR. William T. King Jr., 71, of Guildhall, died on Friday afternoon, May 28, 2004 at Concord Hospital in Concord. Mr. King was born in North Stratford, one of fifteen children, on November 2, 1932, the son of William T. and Carmen (Dupuis) King. Raised in North Stratford, he worked for a time for the Canadian Central Railroad. He went on to serve in the Army in the Korean War and was decorated with several medals, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. At one time he worked for several years for the New Hampshire Highway Department, and for seventeen years he was employed with F.B. Spaulding in Lancaster, where he delivered grain. More recently he drove the Head Start bus in Groveton for six years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved cooking and gardening. Family members include his wife, Charlotte (Eastman) King of Guildhall; five sons, Daniel King of Groveton, Warren King of N. Chelmsford, Mass., Lindsay King of Guildhall, Brian King and David King, both of Lancaster; a brother, Armand King of Lancaster; six sisters, Rita Emerson of Lancaster, Orleans Jeffers of Westbrook, Maine, Gloria Brooks of Lancaster, Joyce Holden of Lebanon, Darlene Henry of North Stratford, and Carol Sibulkin of Hooksett; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John King. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday evening, June 1 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday morning at All Saints Church in Lancaster, with The Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Ridgwell Cemetery, Guildhall. BETTINA LABAR A memorial service for Mrs. Bettina A. (Teichmueller) Preston, 91, of Canaan and a former longtime Salem, N.H., resident, died on May 28, 2004 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown. Mrs. Preston was born in Chelsea, Mass., and had resided in Belmont, Mass. She was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Salem for many years, where she was a member of the Philathea Class and active with several church activities. She attended schools in Pasadena, Calif. She was the widow of Paul Preston, who died in 1979. Survivors include her son, Roger Preston, and is wife Susan of Canaan; a brother, Charles Miller of Florida; and two grandchildren. Private funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29 at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem, followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem. (Covell) Rainville, 78, of Colebrook, died on Friday afternoon, May 28, 2004 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook. Mrs. Rainville was born on June 17, 1925 in Colebrook, daughter of the late Wilfred and Marion (Reed) Covell. Mrs. Rainville was a homemaker. She was an avid reader and folk artist, and loved to garden. She enjoyed spending summers at her camp on Lake Wallace, and for a number of winters she traveled south to Florida with her late husband of over 56 years, Robert W. Rainville. Mrs. Rainville is survived by two sons, Kent Rainville and his wife Roslyn of Mossy Head, Fla., and Robert Rainville and his wife Mary of Colebrook; four sisters, Geri Covell of Hornell, N.Y., Pat Kenny of Lunenburg, Vt., Faye Harris of Northamp-ton, Mass., and Carol Berry of Andover, N.H.; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Rainville is preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert W. Rainville, on April 2, 1999. There will be no calling hours. Saunders, 96, of South Hero, Vt., died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Pittsburg on September 20, 1907, the fourth child of Andrew J. and Ida (Woodward) Holmes. On September 14, 1931, she was married to Albert Marvin Saunders in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Mrs. Saunders was employed by the Department of Agriculture in the soil conservation department. She is survived by a son, Rodney Saunders, and his wife Joan of Plattsburgh; daughter Beverly James and husband David of Humble, Texas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert M. Saunders, on September 14, 1999, and siblings Doris Reynolds, Shirley Holmes and Russell Holmes. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Colchester, with burial following at Mountainview Cemetery in Essex Center.
