RUTH WASHBURN Ruth E. Washburn, 96, holder of Lyme's Boston Post Cane, died on August 1, 2004 at Brookside Nursing Home in Wilder, Vt. She was born in Bath on February 25, 1908, the daughter of David S. and Julia (Allbee) Reed, and was a 1925 graduate of the former Bath High School. She later earned an associate¹s degree from Plymouth Normal School in 1928. She taught in the rural schools of Colebrook prior to her marriage to Carroll H. Washburn in 1932; her husband predeceased her in 1997. For 40 years, the couple owned and operated a dairy farm in Lyme including, in the 1940s and 1950s, a local milk route. In the early years, they also operated the Onawa Tourist Cabins bed and breakfast business. A homemaker, Mrs. Washburn was a longtime member of the Lyme Congregational Church, a former Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and was formerly active in the LCC Women's Fellowship. An 80-year Granger, she was also active in the former Morning Star Grange 62. In 2002, she was presented with Lyme's Boston Post gold cane as the town¹s oldest citizen. Family members include a son, David B. Washburn of Lyme, and several cousins. There are no calling hours. The funeral is Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lyme, Lyme Center, with the Rev. Ed Condict officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Lyme. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lyme FAST Squad, PO Box 202, Lyme, NH 03768.
