Damon GILMAN, Vt. — Vivian G. Damon, 94, died on Monday evening Dec. 29, 2003 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital, West Stewartstown, N.H. Mrs. Damon was born in West Stewartstown on Nov. 12, 1909, the daughter of Arthur A. and Grace M. (Brainard) Fissette. She was raised in West Stewartstown and later married James W. Damon and moved to Gilman. For a time she was employed at the Gilman Paper Company and for many years was the school cook at Lunenburg Elementary School. She also raised approximately 50 foster children and was an outdoor person who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and animals, especially horses. Family members include three sons, Loren Damon of S. Lunenburg, Gary Damon of Greensboro Bend, William H. Brown of Gilman; a daughter, Mary Brown of Gilman; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her husband James died on December 28, 1978. Her son Glenn Aldrich; two daughters, Leone Goulet, Norma Burt; and a brother Wilfred Fissette also died previously. Visiting hours were held on Friday afternoon and evening Jan. 2, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Gilman Methodist Church. Rev. Gerry Piper, pastor, officiated. Burial will be held in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, S. Lunenburg. Jorge A. deVillafane M.D. WHITEFIELD — Jorge A. deVillafane, M.D., 79, of Partridge Lane, died on Sunday morning, Jan. 4, 2004, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, after a long illness. Dr. deVillafane was born in Cordoba, Argentina on April 26, 1924, the son of Carlos deVillafane and Euriquetta deVillafane Lastra. Raised in Argentina he was a 1942 graduate from the Colegro Nacional de Monserrat in Cordoba. He served for a time in the Argentenian Army and returned to college to acquire a Degree of Doctor of Medicine at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba. In 1951 he came to the United States. He was in the Fall River and New Bedford, Mass. area for a brief period and in 1952 went to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, Hanover and the VA Hospital, White River Jct., Vt., where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine. In 1956 he was licensed by the State of New Hampshire to practice medicine and he came to Whitefield with his family to establish his medical practice in his home and at Morrison Hospital. On April 29, 1959 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. In 1971 he joined with Dr. Elwin Falkenham and Dr. Carl Yunghans to form the Regional Medical Professional Association. It was the first primary care physicians group in Northern New Hampshire and was affiliated with B.D. Weeks Memorial Hospital. In 1976 he was involved with the conversion of Morrison Hospital to Morrison Nursing Home of which he became the immediate Medical Director and then served intermittently as director. He served as chief of staff at Weeks Hospital in the early 80s. He was also a member of the B. D. Weeks Hospital Staff for 34 years. Dr. deVillafane retired from his medical practice on December 31, 1994. He was a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians from September 1972 through 1994. He was active in the Coös County Medical Society throughout its existence. He was a member of the New Hampshire Medical Society and the American Medical Association. In his early years of practice he assumed many leadership roles in the New Hampshire Heart Association and served as Whitefield’s Town Health Officer. Throughout his career he provided free diagnostic and therapeutic service for many organizational sponsored clinics. On June 24, 1984 he was appointed Medical Advisor, Local Board No. 4, New Hampshire, by the Director of Selective Service on behalf of the President of the United States. He was a 46-year member of the North Star Lodge #8 of Lancaster and the Valley of Lancaster Scottish Rite. He taught his children and everyone else’s to waterski, which he enjoyed thoroughly. Other pleasures of his were snowskiing, snowmobiling, swimming, and fishing and he loved his quiet time for himself and with his family. He was an avid reader and lifelong student. He was a very dedicated physician who truly cared very much about all of his patients. Family members include his wife of 49 years, Joan Colburn deVillafane; three children, Charles Scott deVillafane of Gardner, Mass., Brenda Marie Harwood of West Brattleboro, Vt., and Theresa Ann Moll of Bellows Falls, Vt.; five grandsons; one granddaughter; a brother, David deVillafane Lastra of Buenos Aires, Argentina, two sisters, Flora deVillafane Ruci of Cordoba, Argentina, and Marta deVillafane Lastra of V. Gral Belgrano, Argentina; and many nieces and nephews. His son Jorge A deVillafane Jr. died in 1979 and one sister also died previously. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A Masonic service was held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning (today) at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lancaster. The Rev. David Rose, pastor, will officiate. Pallbearers will be grandsons Zachariah Harwood, Benjamin Harwood, Nicholas Moll, Gabriel deVillafane, and Kyle deVillafane. A time for fellowship will follow the service in the Parish House at St. Paul’s. Burial will in the spring in Park Street Cemetery, Whitefield. Stephen J. Enos BEVERLY, Mass. — Stephen J. Enos, 47, of Beverly, died in his sleep on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at his residence. Born in Brighton to Warren and Kathleen Hillery Enos, he was raised in Belmont and Beverly. He attended the Industrial School for Crippled Children in Boston and was a graduate of Beverly High School. He continued his education and attended North Shore Community College. As a child, Mr. Enos was a “poster child” for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. He enjoyed movies and playing cards. Family members include his brothers and sisters, Claire Sallese and her husband Joseph of Beverly, Gerard Enos of Rockport, Margy Hobbs and her husband Jeffrey of Wilmington, N.C., and Leo J. Enos of Lancaster, N.H.; his nieces and nephews, Danielle, Jonpaul and Joshua Sallese, all of Beverly, Sara Enos of Tennessee, Nathan Enos of Minnesota, Timothy, Bryan and Katelyn Hobbs of Wilmington, N.C., Leo Enos Jr. of Groton, N.H., and Heather and Noah Enos of Lancaster, N.H.; a great-niece, Gabrielle Sallese of Beverly; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Marion LaDuke WHITEFIELD — Marion LaDuke, 96, of 48 Prospect Street, passed away at the Morrison Nursing Home, on January 3, 2003 following a short illness. She was born in Wentworth, daughter of Edward and Nettie (Pike) Wright. She attended the Littleton Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in the class of 1930. Following some further nursing education in Boston, she moved to Whitefield in 1932, and worked as a Registered Nurse at the former Morrison Hospital. During her tenure there she served as Superintendent of Nurses, and also as acting administrator of the institution. She retired from nursing in 1976, following 47 years of nursing service. She was a member of the Whitefield RSVP, Whitefield Historical Society, and the United Methodist Women’s Club. She was also an avid gardener, and loved spending time at her camp on Forest Lake. Family members include devoted daughter-in-law, Elaine LaDuke of Littleton; two grandchildren, Kim, and Todd; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband Harold died in 1989, her son David died in 1994, and three sisters also died previously. A celebration of her life will take place at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Whitefield, on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. Burial will take place in the Spring in the Park Street Cemetery. Woodrow Wilson Stillings WHITEFIELD — Woodrow Wilson Stillings, 91, of Whitefield, died on Dec. 25, 2003 at the Morrison Nursing Home. Woodrow was born in Bartlett on July 2, 1912, the son of Samuel and Cora (Hatch) Stillings. He was a decorated war veteran, having served in the Army for a period of five years during World War II. Woodrow worked in the local shoe industry for more than 40 years. Prior to that, he helped operate the family farm. Woodrow was well known for his daily walks around town, even into his 90s. He loved to greet everyone he met with a smile and a wave. His hobbies were woodworking and tinkering with just about everything. He loved to hunt, fish, and take long rides with his wife. The family includes his wife of 50 years, Frances Nelson Stillings of Littleton; three stepchildren, Nancy Gibeau of Gilmanton, Loxley Ness of Monroe and Elaine Koczur of Littleton; as well as many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. Four sisters, six brothers and one stepdaughter died previously. At the request of the family, there were no calling hours. A graveside service is planned at a later date in the spring, which will be announced. Ursin AVON, Conn. — Lola Belle (Hodgdon) Ursin, 75, died of cancer following a six-month illness at an area convalescent home, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003. Lola was born on May 10, 1928 in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the youngest of 13 children born to Albert and Cecile (Depoutee) Hodgdon of Granby, Vt. She attended Granby’s school and was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. She was a resident of Bolton, Conn. for many years and was employed as a waitress at Willie’s Steak House for over 30 years and at Sears Roebuck for five years prior to retirement. For several recent years, she enjoyed vacations in the North Country, visiting her remaining sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. She was an avid reader, though her sight had deteriorated over the past two years. Lola loved animals and flowers, and she was especially fond of the Christmas season. Family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, Vincent and Valerie Ursin of Storrs and Christopher and Teresa Ursin of Bolton; a daughter and son-in-law, Candis and Preston Harper of Avon; four grandchildren, Elise, Michael, Alex and Ryan Ursin. Also, a brother-in-law, Howard Colby of Lunenburg, Vt.; sisters-in-law, Elaine Hodgdon of Lancaster, N.H., Everdene Hodgdon of Guildhall, Vt. and Lorraine Hodgdon of Lebanon, N.H., and many nieces and nephews. Lola lost a son, PFC William Ursin during his service in Vietnam. Her husband, William Ursin died previously, as did her companion of 27 years, Richard Messier; her parents; brothers, Fox, Harper, John, Charles, Albert Jr. (Peter) and William Hodgdon; and sisters, Marion Leighton, Grace Carleton, Rebecca Hodgdon, Alberta Stone, Iona Colby, and Louise Martin. There were no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at the Granby, Vt. church cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in Lola’s name to the charity of one’s choice. Coventry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Debra Wallace TUSCON, Ariz. — Debra Wallace, 31, died on Dec. 26, 2003 at the University Medical Center after a lifetime of illness. She was born on May 10, 1972 in Keene, N. H. She attended school in Keene and continued on to Plymouth State College. She had many hobbies that she enjoyed, but her favorite was her love of cats. Family members include her mother, Mable Tindle of North Stratford, N.H.; father, David Wallace of Guilford, Vt.; a sister Laura Wallace of Jaffrey, N.H.; several cousins, aunts, uncles, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She also leaves her longtime friend, partner, and caregiver, Lee Passmore of Tuscon. There will be no services. Donations in her memory may be made to the University Medical Center in Tuscon.
