Earle Lewis Campbell Was state purchasing agent WHITEFIELD -- Earle L. Campbell, 98, died on Jan. 24, 2004, at the Morrison Nursing Home. Earle was born in Lunenburg, Vt. on June 3, 1905 to Malcolm and Harriet (Carpenter) Campbell. He attended school in the Lunenburg, Vt. area. Earle was employed by the State of New Hampshire as a Purchasing Agent in the tourism division. Family members include his wife, Shirley (Johnson) Campbell of Whitefield, and a son, Malcolm Campbell of Jefferson. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Francis "Fran" A. Coffin Businessman, family man ERROL -- Francis "Fran" A. Coffin, 54, died on Jan. 30, 2004, following a motor vehicle accident on Route 6 in Errol. He was born on March 14, 1949 in Portland, Me., the son of Philip and Marion (Stanhope) Coffin. Mr. Coffin was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Vietnam War era. He was employed in construction as a boilermaker for 20 years and then owned and operated Errol Enterprises for 20 years, until its sale this past summer. He and his wife maintained ownership of Errol Oil. He was a volunteer and member of various committees and town organizations. He was a two-term selectman for the town of Errol, founder of Umbagog Chamber of Commerce, volunteer fireman for Errol Volunteer Fire Department, and member of Umbagog Wildlife Refuge Committee. Mr. Coffin was an avid outdoorsman who loved to take his grandson Austin hunting. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed. The family includes his wife of 14 years, Gloria (Lamphere) Coffin; two daughters, Michele Bartlett of Loudon and Leeann Wright of South Burlington, Vt.; two sons, Wesley Coffin and Thomas Coffin, both of Berlin; six grandchildren; four brothers, Philip Coffin, Frank Coffin and Raymond Coffin, all of Yarmouth, Me., and Gary Coffin of Mexico, Me.; a sister, Kathy Eaton of Yarmouth, Me.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. A granddaughter, Hallie Coffin, died previously. Calling hours were private. A memorial service was held on Tuesday at Errol Congregational Church, with Pastor Larry Clough officiating. George Fredrick Dimick Air Force vetean EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. -- George Fredrick Dimick, 63, of East Montpelier, Vt., died on Dec. 16, 2003. He was born on Dec. 23, 1939 in Lancaster, the son of Doris (Fitch) and Fredrick Wilder Dimick. Mr. Dimick was a 1958 graduate of Gorham High School and served in the Air Force. Survivors include two sons, Scott Dimick of Gorham, Me., and Troy Dimick of Thornton; a brother, Donald F. Dimick of Osprey, Fla.; and a sister, Harriette O’Brien of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two grandchildren, Hannah and Kyle; several nieces and nephews. His parents and a brother, Paul, died previously. Interment will be in the summer at the convenience of the family. The Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton is in charge of arrangements. Darlene M. (Wood) Dowse Found joy in her family, others ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -- Darlene M. (Wood) Dowse of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died on Jan. 28, 2004 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., at the age of 58. She was born on Sept. 29, 1945 in Lunenburg, the daughter of Rupert T. and Mildred M. (Holloway) Wood. Darlene worked for Palmer Brothers Dry Cleaning in St. Johnsbury, for the last 17 years. Family time and grandchildren were most important to her. She had a passion for flowers, gardening and also cooking. No one ever left her home hungry. She often gave to others without thinking of herself. The family includes her husband of 18 years, Cleo J. Dowse of St. Johnsbury; three daughters and their husbands, Connie L. and John Montgomery of Lyndonville, Lori A. and Edward Leonard of St. Johnsbury, and Tammy S. and George Wagner Jr. of West Burke; eight grandchildren, Andrew and Justin Lee, Nicole and Troy Leonard, Hannah and Lilian Wagner, and Sean and Ashley Montgomery; a great-grandson, Jacob Montgomery; her mother, Mildred Wood of Lyndonville; a brother, Brent Wood of St. Johnsbury; three sisters and their husbands, Janice and Bob Jackson of Lyndonville, Rena and Jim Nunn of Waterford, and Lorna and Dewey Persons Sr. of St. Johnsbury; a brother-in-law and his wife, Ralph and Eleanor Bailey of Colorado; many nieces and nephews. Charles Gordon Earle Jr. Worked as newspaper printer MAIDSTONE, Vt. -- Charles Gordon Earle Jr., 71, of North Road, died on Wednesday morning Jan. 28, 2004 at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, after a long illness. Mr. Earle was born in North Attleboro, Mass., on Sept. 21, 1932, the son of Charles G. and Winifred (Hare) Earle Sr. Charles was raised in North Attleboro and went on to attend Keene State College. For many years he worked as a printer and was employed by newspaper publishers including the Manchester Union Leader and the Lawrence Eagle Tribune. He also taught others the printing trade. On Nov. 28, 1968 he married Janice L. Miller in Manchester. In 1980 they purchased the Trading Post in Pittsburg, which they operated several years. They also resided in Littleton, Maine for nine years during which time they owned and operated the Village Store in Monticello. Charles was well liked and will be remembered for his great sense of humor. Family members include a son, Mark Earle of Guilford, Conn.; three daughters, Linda Hafford of Northfield, Laurie Stockbridge of Franklin, Joy Hebert of Pittsburg; thirteen grandchildren, Melissa Earle, Matthew Earle Sr., Michael Earle, Ashley Earle, Samantha Earle, Matthew Tusi, Steven Tusi, Adam Tusi, Jason Stockbridge, Samantha Hebert, Teasia Hafford, Beth Hebert, Jillian Stockbridge; a great-grandson, Matthew Earle Jr.; three sisters, Audrey Diamond of Florida, Inez Lightfoot of West Chelmsford, Mass., Gwendolyn Broder of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. A son Charles Graham Earle Sr. and a grandson Charles Graham Earls Jr. died previously. There were no visiting hours. A memorial visiting hour was held on Sunday afternoon Feb. 1, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service was held immediately afterward at 2 p.m. The Rev. David Pendleton, pastor of the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ officiated. Linda D. Poulin Horsewoman, active in Boys Scouts WHITEFIELD -- Linda D. Poulin, 51, Stardust Drive, died suddenly on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Littleton, daughter of Joseph "George" and Carlene (Martin) Dumas. She attended local schools and had been employed at the Littleton Coin Company for more then 20 years. She moved to Whitefield in 1985. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Littleton, was extremely active in the area Boy Scouts of America, The Order of the Arrow, the Civil Air Patrol, and was an avid horse person. She was also active with the Junior ROTC of White Mountains Regional High School. Family members include her husband, Bernard J. Poulin, Jr., a son, Bernard J. Poulin, II, her parents, and a sister Donna Tholl, all of Whitefield. Calling hours were held at the Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, on Friday, Jan. 30. A Mass of Christian Burial took place at the All Saint’s Catholic Church, Lancaster, on Saturday, Jan. 31. Burial will take place in the spring in the St. Matthews Cemetery, Whitefield. Rhoades Ferguson "Dusty" Sawyer WWII vet, forester LANCASTER -- Rhoades Ferguson "Dusty" Sawyer, 79, of Richardson Street, died on Sunday evening Feb. 1, 2004, at Country Village Genesis Eldercare, Lancaster. Mr. Sawyer was born in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Dec. 4, 1924, the son of John Henry and Marjorie (Whitemore) Sawyer. Dusty was raised in Northampton, Mass., where he graduated high school. He went on to attended St. Lawrence University Theological School for one year before serving with the Army in WWII. He was a soldier with the Army’s 10th Mountain Division in the Rhineland, Central Europe, Normandy, and Northern France. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day. Returning home he attended four years at New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. He was a professional forester under the employ of International Paper Company as Forest Supervisor, NH Woodlands Operations, for 35 years. He was also a licensed NH land surveyor and a NH Deputy Forest Fire Warden. He attended the Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster, for 40 years. He was a lifetime member of the Society of American Foresters in New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, and member of the Lake Wentworth Association, Wolfeboro. His hobbies included reading, gardening, and music of the big band era. Family members include his wife of 52 years, Irma Bean Sawyer of Lancaster; three children, Kathy Ann Sawyer of South Portland, Maine, Linda Sawyer O’Neil of Alton, Kenneth Rhoades Sawyer of Philadelphia, Penn.; four grandchildren, Alyssa and Joshua O’Neil, Kenneth and Matthew Sawyer; a sister, Margaret Bodeur of Center Tuftonboro. Memorial visiting hours will be held at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster, on Friday evening, Feb. 6, from 6-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1 at the Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster. Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Bentum, pastor, and Rev. Curtis W. Smith will officiate. Cremation will follow with burial in the spring in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. Shirley Mae Simonds VFW Auxilian, gardener LITTLETON -- Shirley Mae Simonds, 82, died at the Littleton Regional Hospital on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004. She was born in Whitefield on May 2, 1921, the daughter of Roy L. and Ethel (Lindsey) Brown. Shirley was raised in Twin Mountain and married Maurice Paradis in 1940. They had four children. After Maurice’s death in 1953, Shirley moved to Littleton to raise her four children with her second husband, Edward Simonds. They lived in Littleton for over 50 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and worked in local shoe shops until her retirement. Shirley enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and spending time with her family. The family includes two daughters, Jeanette Paradis Tetreault and her husband Russell of Littleton; Elaine Paradis Smith of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two sons, Richard Paradis and his wife Marie of Greenville, N.C., and Maurice Paradis and his wife Lynne of Littleton; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd S. Brown of Bethlehem; one sister, Alice LaRose of Sanford, Me.; and many nieces and nephews. Her second husband, Edward Simonds died on Nov. 7, 2003. A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Friday, Jan. 30, with the Rev. Joseph Klatka as celebrant. Burial will be in the spring in St. Rose Cemetery.
