Bryant Mother, grandmother COLEBROOK Ñ Janet G. Bryant, 58, died on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook, following a brief illness. She was born on June 19, 1945 in Clarksville, a daughter of Lenwood and Hazel (Masters) Bresette. Mrs. Bryant attended school in Clarksville. She married Walter A. Bryant Jr. on May 16, 1964. She was employed by Tillotson Rubber from 1968 until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed cooking, and was especially talented at making breads and biscuits. She liked to take walks in the country, baking, sewing and home life, especially time spent with her children and grandchildren. The family includes her loving husband of 39 years, Walter ÒBillyÓ Bryant Jr. of Colebrook; a son, Billy Bryant of Colebrook; a daughter, Tammy Bryant of Colebrook; a stepson, Dennis Bryant of Berlin; a stepdaughter, Eleanor May Bryant of West Charleston, Vt.; two brothers, Lawrence Bresette of Rutland, Vt., and Robert Bresette of East Wallingford, Vt.; four sisters, Joy Towle of West Stewartstown, Dorothy Redmond of Ocala, Fla., Marjorie Prescott of North Carolina and Joann Goodwin of North Stratford; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Lenwood Bresette and Frederick Bresette died previously. Calling hours were held on March 2 at the Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3 (today) at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the spring at Colebrook Village Cemetery. Clifford Drake Jr. Roots in North Country SARASOTA, Fla. Ñ Clifford Drake Jr., 76, died on Feb. 9, 2004 in Sarasota, Fla. He was born on April 21, 1927 in New York City to Clifford Drake Sr. and Christiane ÒMarieÓ (Woldt) Drake. He attended the Jefferson Elementary School, where a favorite teacher was Mrs. Carpenter. During this time, he lived with his grandparents Ethel (Drake) Shute and Frank F. Shute, his mother Marie Drake and his younger sister Pat at their home ÒBashabaÓ in the Waumbek Cottage Colony. Mr. and Mrs. Shute were the last owners of the ÒoldÓ Waumbek Hotel resort when it burned to the ground in March 1928. Mr. Drake was a 1947 graduate of the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. Following college, he joined Texaco and was associated with that company for 27 years, based in Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and New York. In 1974 he created the Avanti Petroleum Co., based in London, and he lived there for the next four years. He returned to New York City in 1978 and within a year accepted a position with Mitsui USA. He remained with them until his retirement in 1986. He and his family were long-time summer residents in Spofford Lake, N.H., and later on had a summer home in Quechee, Vt. He was an avid tennis and squash player. Trout fishing was one of his greatest interests. Mr. Drake returned to ÒBashabaÓ many times to fish locally and often with his guide Ernest Cass of the North Road. Together, they took his children Susan and Craig on fishing trips, both in Jefferson and further north. Later on, he and his wife Jill took annual fall vacations at the ÒGlenÓ in Pittsburg where he continued to pursue his love for fishing. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Drake visited numerous countries, but equally important to them were their nostalgic trips back to Jefferson and Pittsburg. For the past 20 years, Mr. and Mrs. DrakeÕs permanent home was on Siesta Key in Sarasota, Fla. He was a trustee of the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Century Foundation, as well as a member of the Field Club of Sarasota and the Union Club of New York. The family includes his wife of 54 years, Kathleen ÒJillÓ (Sladen) Drake of Sarasota, Fla.; his son, Craig L. Drake, his daughter Susan W., and two grandsons, Connor D. and Clifford 3rd, all of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia (Drake) Keady of Longmeadow, Mass., and Mary (Drake) Fuller of Boca Raton, Fla.; and first cousins, Leland F. Ward of Greenwich, Conn. and Winifred S. Ward of Jefferson. A funeral was held on Feb. 13 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Siesta Key, Sarasota, Fla. Drew Grange member, Pythian Sister NORTH STRATFORD Ñ Margaret A. Drew, 87, died on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 23, 2004, at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook. Mrs. Drew was born on Apr. 14, 1916, in Barnston, Quebec. She came to the United States as a young girl with her family and lived in Beecher Falls, Vt. She was a graduate of the Canaan High School in Canaan, Vt., the class of 1934. In 1937, after her marriage, she moved to East Colebrook and lived there until 1955, when she and her family moved to Columbia, and lived on their farm there until 1955. She then moved to North Stratford. She was a 60-plus-year member of the N.H. State Grange, 43-year member of the North Stratford Pythian Sisters, member of the VFW Auxiliary of N. Stratford, a very active member of the North Stratford Senior Citizens and member of the First Baptist Church of N. Stratford. Family members include her two sons, Garland Drew of Califon, N.J. and Gary Drew of Hackettstown, N.J.; four daughters, Sandra Paquette of Colebrook, Beverly Fogg of Columbia, Gail Chappelle and Barbara Riff, both of North Stratford; 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Willard Drew died in 1980, and a son, Haynes Drew, also died previously. Calling hours were held on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A funeral service was held on Feb. 26 at the First Baptist Church in North Stratford, with The Rev. Larry Clough, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery in N. (Wheeler) Kamp, 53, died on Feb. 13, 2004 at Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital. She was born on Dec. 19, 1950 in Manchester, the daughter of Hillary and Ethal (Avery) Wheeler. Mrs. Kamp enjoyed working at Wal-Mart as a cashier, where she enjoyed being around friends and visiting with customers. She and her family moved to Colebrook this past November from Winslow, Me., but because of illness she was unable to work. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. The family includes her husband, Tim Kamp of Colebrook; a daughter, Lori Smith of Colebrook; six grandchildren; and a cousin. There are no calling hours. Leslie Harter Pearse (U.S.A. ret), 85, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., died on Feb. 21, 2004, at the Hadlow Center of Community Hospice. He was born on Nov. 2, 1918 in Boston, Mass., and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1990 from Boca Raton, Fla. following 30 years of active duty. Col. Pearse retired on May 19, 1970 as the Provost Marshal and Commanding officer of the 236th Military Police Detachment at Walter Reed Army Hospital. He began his Army career in 1940 where he served as an infantry officer in Europe with the 3rd Armored Division. In 1961 he became Assistant Provost Marshall and Security & Intelligence Officer of the Chemical Corps. He was the Provost Marshal at Edgewood Arsenal and the Chemical, Biological and Radiology Agency. In 1964 he served in Korea as the Provost Marshall with the 1st Cavalry Division and 2nd Infantry Division. He provided security services for presidents Johnson, Nixon and Eisenhower. Col. Pearse received the Meritorious Service Medal, the Fourragere from the government of Belgium, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation Ribbon. Col. Pearse was a member of Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church, the Marsh Landing Golf and Country Club and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, handball and especially golf. He was the great-nephew of Patrick Henry Pearse, one of IrelandÕs greatest visionaries who sacrificed his life for the formation of Home Rule and the establishment of Southern Ireland. Family members include his wife, Bette Pearse; a son, Leslie ÒSkipÓ Pearse and wife Lee Ann of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Linda Bruce and husband Robert of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Robin Stetler and husband Brian of Jupiter, Fla.; three sisters, Joan Gates of Englewood, Fla., Charlotte Buchanan and Janet Rust, both of Beverly, Mass.; five grandchildren, Talli (Bruce) Connell of New York City, Randall Bruce of San Diego, Calif., Lauren Statler of Jupiter, Fla., Leslie (Pearse) Lyons and Lindsey Pearse, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Alice Pearse of Jefferson.
