Brown Poet, gardener LUNENBURG, Vt. Ñ Dorothy C. Brown, 75, of Lunenburg, Vt., died on April 3, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her family, books and poems that she had written. She was born on July 3, 1928 in Rochester, Vt., a daughter of John E. and Elizabeth (Manchester) Miller. Mrs. Brown was a loving homemaker and was a bookkeeper for many years for her husbandÕs business. She was a proud member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed bird watching. She loved to write religious poems and was involved in mail ministry. Family members include her husband of 50 years, Sherwood V. Brown Sr.; two sons, three daughters; several grandchildren; three brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 18 at the Gilman Methodist Church in Gilman, Vt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Caledonia Home Health, Sherman Drive, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. Ñ Duncan Estabrooks, 50, beloved father of three died unexpectedly on Monday, April 5, 2004, at his home in Guildhall. A complete obituary will appear in next weekÕs paper. Information on services will be updated as it becomes available. Holly J. Hyde Was Weeks childrenÕs librarian GREENVILLE, R.I. Ñ Holly J. Hyde, 58, of Greenville, R.I., died on Saturday, March 20 at home. Born in Providence, R.I., she was a daughter of Rupert Cohn Hyde and Dorothy (Colwell) Hyde. Mrs. Hyde had lived in Greenville for many years, previously living in Lancaster. She was a childrenÕs librarian at the Weeks Memorial Library in Lancaster for 10 years. She was also a volunteer docent at Roger Williams Zoo in Providence during the past year. She was a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society, the Rhode Island Audubon Society and the Wild Plant Society. A competitor when she was younger, Mrs. Hyde enjoyed keeping and riding horses. The family includes her husband, Philip S. Verrier; her son, Adam B. Verrier of Anchorage, Ak.; her daughter, Angela V. Carbonneau of Newport, Vt.; her mother, of Greenville, R.I.; a brother, Leslie C. Hyde of St. George, Me.; a sister, Shirley Fontenault of Chesapeake, Va.; and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Andrew Carbonneau. A Memorial Service was held on March 26 in the Greenville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Russell W. Arnold officiating. Her burial was private. Leo J. Monahan Veteran, outdoorsman WHITEFIELD Ñ Leo J. Monahan, 85, formerly of Elm Street, and more recently of the NH Veterans Home, Tilton, passed away at the Franklin Regional Hospital on Saturday, April 3, following a short illness. He was born in Berlin, a son of James and Mary Monahan. He had resided in Whitefield since the early 1940s. He worked as a millwright for 40 years at the Georgia Pacific Paper Company, Gilman, Vt. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting and fishing, and doing woodworking as a hobby. He served in the Army during World War II. His wife Helen died in 1999. Four sisters, Stella, Kathleen, Gertrude, Betty, and three brothers, James, Lawrence and Stanley also died previously. His family includes two sons, David Monahan of Whitefield, and Michael Monahan and wife Carol of Katy, Tex.; two granddaughters, Kelley Stafford and husband Robert of Stowe, Vt., and Molly Harrigan and husband Thomas of York, Me.; two grandsons, Joel and Chase Monahan; four great-grandchildren, Riley and Sarah Stafford, and Alex and Grady Harrigan; a sister, Elizabeth LeVesque and husband Joseph of Berlin; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Florio, of New York. There are no visiting hours. Funeral Services will take place at the Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, on Wednesday, April 7 (today), at 11 am. Hyman Nusman Decorated veteran, livestock dealer LANCASTER Ñ Hyman Nusman, 81, of Holton Point, died on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Weeks Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lowell, Mass. on November 14, 1922, a son of the late Samuel and Ida (Sideman) Nusman. He lived in Lowell, Mass., and the Pelham, N.H., area during his youth, and moved to Conway and Berlin following his military service. He was the husband of the late Ida (Simonoff) Nusman, to whom he was married for 25 years, and the late Norma (Lane) Nusman, with whom he shared 19 years of marriage. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Nusman served with the 90th Division Infantry in Central Europe and Rhineland, and was a recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medals, the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946. With his late brother Louis he owned and operated Nusman Livestock, as a livestock and cattle dealer for many years. Family members include his son, Richard Nusman and wife Lor Nusman of Bradenton Fla.; two daughters, Sharon Nusman Foster and husband Earl Moore of Virginia Beach, Va., and Debra Nusman Stever and husband H. Guyford Stever Jr., of Randolph; a step-son, Paul Lane of Vermont; a step-daughter, Elizabeth Lane Raymond of Vermont; grandchildren, Samuel Foster of Virginia Beach, Va., Rosalind Stever of Boston, Mass., Beth Nusman of Bradenton, Fla., and Leah Nusman of Bradenton, Fla.; step-grandchildren, Kelly Lemieux, Sara Lane, Michelle Lane, Jacob Raymond, John Bertoni and Brian Bertoni; one step-great-grandson, Zachary Lemieux; two sisters, Shirley Goldberg and Bertha Ayotte; one brother, Max Nusman; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held on Sunday, April 4, at the Montefiore Synagogue Cemetery in Pelham. Charles A. Robbins Jr. Was Pittsburg transfer station supervisor PITTSBURG Ñ Charles A. Robbins Jr., 74, died on March 30, 2004 at Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, Colebrook, after a sudden illness. He was born on Jan. 1, 1930, in Quincy, Mass., a son of Charles and Annie (Brunette) Robbins. Mr. Robbins attended school in Massachusetts. He was first employed as a clam digger. He worked as a machinist for Boston Gear Works in Wollaston, Mass., and later as a truck driver for JP Noonan and Roy Amy. Mr. Robbins served as a fireman and rescue diver for Pembroke (Mass.) Fire Department. He moved to Pittsburg in the mid-1980s where he was supervisor of the Pittsburg Transfer Station for many years. Family members include his wife of 51 years, Carolyn (Walker) Robbins of Pittsburg; four daughters, Linda Robbins Porazzo and Leanne Kelley, both of Pembroke, Mass., Lois Pento of Halifax, Mass., and Lorrie Byrnes of Pittsburg; four brothers, Donald Robbins, Francis Robbins, Howard Robbins and Albert Robbins, all of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Private family calling hours were held on Saturday, April 3. The funeral services will be held at Hollow Cemetery in Pittsburg later in the spring. Denis Rouleau Avid sportman COLUMBIA Ñ Denis Rouleau, 46, of 6 Rouleau Road, died on March 29, 2004 at his home. He was born on August 30, 1957, in Tupper Lake, N.Y., the son of Robert and Jeannine (Desautels) Rouleau. He was a self-employed logger. Mr. RouleauÕs interests included gardening and raising horses. He was considered an avid sportsman. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. Family members include a daughter, Emily Rouleau of Colebrook; two stepdaughters, Ellen Mills and Laura Mills both of Columbia; his mother, Jeannine Boire of Colebrook; a granddaughter; his brothers and sisters, Micheline Lambert and Diane Walsh, both of Manchester, Peter Rouleau of Columbia, Judy Erbaker of Holiday, Fla., Serge Rouleau, Germaine Boire, Norman Boire, and Rita Gilbert all of Colebrook, Francoise Johnson of Newmarket, Jocelyn Boire of West Stewartstown, Blandine Shallow of Jefferson, and Helen Phillips of Hampstead; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Silsby, 79, of Pond Hill Road, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at the Littleton Regional Hospital. She was born in Lancaster on November 30, 1924, a daughter of Clifford and Eleanor (Morse) Colby. Karlene was a homemaker and lifetime resident of Lunenburg. She was a graduate of Lancaster Academy. Family members include her son, George Silsby of Lunenburg; a daughter, Charlotte Cornell of Lunenburg; two sisters, Marilyn Pond and Marcia Pond both of Lunenburg; six grandchildren, Jason, Kendra, and Steven Silsby, Raymond and Ina Whitcomb, Ellen Nelson; nine great-grandchildren, Nathan and Nicole Silsby, Marc, Christa, and Jessica Poulin, Macaelin and Makenzie Flensburg, Emily Offt, Leigha Nelson; nieces and nephews. Her husband Harry W. Silsby and a brother, Dana Colby, died previously. At KarleneÕs request there were no visiting hours. A graveside service was held on Saturday morning, April 3, at 10 a.m., in the Riverside Cemetery, S. Lunenburg. Rev. Steven Bascom, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Littleton, officiated. Tobyne PastorÕs wife, volunteer LANCASTER Ñ Pauline M. Tobyne, 76, of 186 Main Street, died on Monday evening March 29, 2004 at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mrs. Tobyne was born in Northumberland, on May 25, 1927, the daughter of Erastus and Mary (Silver) Blodgett. She was raised in Stratford Hollow, and educated in Stratford schools. On August 28, 1946 she married Rev. Ralph S. Tobyne of Lunenburg, Vt., and they later moved to West Warren, Mass. She worked 20 years at W.E. Wright Inc. of West Warren. They later moved to Brownington Center, Vt., where Ralph was the pastor of the Brownington Center Church. In 1996 they returned to New Hampshire where they have shared an apartment at the McKee Inn, Lancaster. As a pastorÕs wife she devoted much of her time assisting Ralph within the ministry. She was also an avid volunteer providing even more time to the communities where she resided. At one time she was a Hospice volunteer. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and crafts. Family members include her husband of Lancaster; a son, Jerry Tobyne and his wife Shelia of Lancaster; a sister, Dorothy Baker of Franklin; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, and four brothers, Elsworth, Ralph, Everett, and Leslie died previously. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, March 31, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 1, at the Advent Christian Church, Whitefield. Rev. Lou Going, pastor, co-officiated with Rev. Dean A. Stiles, pastor of the Jefferson Christian Church.
