Bottoms Former president of Timberland Machines HARLINGEN, Tex. -- Robert J. Bottoms, 79, died on Thursday, May 13, 2004, at his residence in Harlingen, Tex. Bob was born in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada on September 9, 1924. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his three children, Rick of Poland, Maine, Teri of Keller, Tex. and Gayleen of Cape May, N. J. and six affectionate grandchildren who knew him as "Bobby." His wife of 48 years, Aileen, had died previously. In 1933, Bob joined the Oxford Rifles and played drum in the bugle band. Bob served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1941 to 1948 and took great pleasure reminding his fellow American that Canada entered WWII before the United States. He entered the war at the age of 16 and had actively maintained relationships with his fellow surviving naval seamen until his passing. In 1950, Bob was employed by Timberland Machines Ltd. in Woodstock, Ontario. In 1956, Timberland Machines, Inc. established a facility in Lancaster, N.H., which grew to five branches supporting the New England region. Timberland Machines, Inc. was responsible for the success and development of the Timberjack Log Skidder. In the 1960s, Bob was a motivating force in the introduction of the snowmobile to New England and Timberland Machines, Inc., the last sole independent distributors of the Bombardier Ski-Doo Snowmobile. In 1977, at the age of 52, Bob retired as President of Timberland. Bob and Aileen traveled extensively in their mobile home in the United States and throughout Central America. During this period they grew to enjoy the climate and friendships they developed in Southwest Texas. In 1981, Bob and Aileen permanently moved to the Rio Grande Valley, and established many lasting friendships there. Bob was an avid golfer and fisherman. He will be remembered and dearly missed by those who truly appreciated his integrity, humility, and pride as a husband, father, and grandfather. A private memorial service was held on Saturday, May 15. Jack Eckerd Founded Eckerd wilderness camps CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Jack Eckerd, 91, philanthropist, activist, and founder of the Jack Eckerd Corporation, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in the company of his family. Starting in the 1950s, he transformed the retail drugstore business, creating self-service stores and the chain bearing his name. A man of great faith, he deeply believed that every child is entitled to an opportunity to succeed. In 1968 he and his wife, Ruth, founded Eckerd Youth Alternatives, a leading non-profit organizations offering therapeutic educational programs to troubled and at-risk youth. During his lifetime, more than 60,000 troubled youth have been helped in Eckerd Youth AlternativesÕ programs, including at Camp E-Toh-Anee in Stewartstown, N.H. His active involvement in politics and service in both state and national government spanned 30 years and included appointments by both Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter as Administrator of the General Services Administration. He was also appointed to serve on the Grace CommissionÕs PresidentÕs Private Sector Survey on Cost Control by President Ronald Reagan. In 1981, Florida Governor Bob Graham appointed Mr. Eckerd Chairman of Prison Rehabilitative Industries & Diversified Enterprises, Inc. (PRIDE). Mr. Eckerd served as a trustee of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., an institution promoting the principles of free enterprise. In 1986, he successfully led the ÒNo CasinosÓ campaign to defeat casino gambling in Florida. He also ran unsuccessfully for public office in Florida three times: twice for governor and once for the U. S. Senate. Mr. Eckerd served as a trustee and interim president of Eckerd College, trustee of PACT, Inc. (Ruth Eckerd Hall) and as a former deacon and member of the Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, Fla. Over the years, he was involved with numerous business, civic, and charitable organizations. Born on May 16, 1913 in Wilmington, Del., Mr. Eckerd was graduated from Culver Military Academy and the Boeing School of Aeronautics. He was a pilot for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, receiving the Air Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of the Hump Pilots Association, the organization of pilots and crews that served in the China-Burma-India Theatre that flew over the Himalayan Mountains known as the ÒHump.Ó In addition to his wife, Ruth, Mr. Eckerd is survived by seven children, William Eckerd, Bozeman, Mont.; Rosemary Lassiter, Wilmington, Del., James Swann, Merritt Island, Fla.; Kathy Swann Brooks, Tampa, Fla.; Terrell Swann Clark, Tampa, Fla.; Richard Eckerd, Asheville, N.C.; Nancy Eckerd Hart, Clearwater, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church on May 24. Homer Dean Frizzell Leaves North Country siblings MAXTON, N.C. -- Homer Dean Frizzell, 73, of 97 Sanbryer Lane, died on Friday, May 14, 2004 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. Family members include his two sons, Dean Frizzell and wife, Michelle of the home, and Blaine Frizzell of Lumberton; two daughters, Audrey Parker of Lumberton and Wanda Farris and husband Steve of Lumberton; a sister, Eva Knowlton of North Stratford, N.H.; a brother, Benjamin Earl Frizzell of Milan, N.H.; a special friend, Ernestine Griffin of Lumberton; and four grandsons. His father, Albert O. Frizzell and his mother, Marcia T. Dingman, both died previously. Funeral services were held on May 17 at Revels Funeral Home Chapel in Lumberton. The Rev. Willie Scott Jr., The Rev. Gary Deese and The Rev. Greg Locklear officiated. Burial followed in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens. Wanda L. Grenier Devoted to home and church TWIN MOUNTAIN -- Wanda L. Grenier, 56, of Route 3, died on Monday, May 17, 2004 at Littleton Regional Hospital, following a sudden illness. She was born in Barre, Vt., a daughter of Julius and Dora (Overstreet) Edson. She spent most of her lifetime in the Barre area prior to relocating to the Littleton, Bethlehem and Twin Mountain area about 10 years ago. Mrs. Grenier was an active homemaker, a woman who was continually caring for others, and extremely active in her church. The family includes her husband, Antonio Grenier of Bethlehem; two sons, Roger and his wife Hattie Joyal of Valdosta, Ga., and Matthew and his wife Ruth Joyal of Deltona, Fla.; five grandchildren, Brian, Bradley, Brett, Michael and Mariah; her father, Julius Edson of Barre, Vt.; a sister, Linda Blow of Barre, Vt.; and two brothers, James Edson of Websterville, Vt., and Charles Edson of West Burke, Vt. Andre Joseph Pelletier Avid fisherman, family man WHITEFIELD -- Andre ÒAndrewÓ Joseph Pelletier, 86, of Forest Lake Road, died at his home on Tuesday morning, May 18, 2004. Mr. Pelletier was born in Causapscal, PQ, Canada, on August 25, 1917, the son of Pierre Joseph and Marianne (Rioux) Pelletier. He retired at age 62 from the Groveton Paper Mill after 26 years of employment. He enjoyed his retirement years with his wife Irene, fishing in Florida in the winter and New Hampshire in the summer. His last two summers were spent with his family in their new home on Burns Lake in Whitefield, where his wife Irene continues to reside. Family members include his wife, Irene (Choquette) Pelletier of Whitefield and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons, Henri Daniel Pelletier of Ft. (St. Laurent) Poell, 84, a former lifelong resident of Manchester, died on May 19, 2004 at Littleton Hospital. She was born in Manchester, the daughter of Alfred and Marie Louise (Abel) St. Laurent, and attended local schools. She had lived in Whitefield for the past 18 months. Mrs. Poell had been employed at VarickÕs Jewelers and was a retired employee of the former Manchester Federal Savings & Loan Association, having been employed in banking for many years until her retirement. She was a parishioner of Saint Joseph Cathedral. The family includes numerous nieces and nephews, including Maxine M. McGuire of Marion, Ind., Marilynn M. Turgeon of Whitefield, and Joyce J. Patricia Lee Rusboldt Candy maker NOTTINGHAM -- Patricia Lee Rusboldt, 61, of 9 Swan Drive, died on Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Exeter Hospital in Exeter, after a period of failing health. She was born on April 12, 1943, the daughter of Andrew and Henrietta (Connary) Kay. A resident of Nottingham since September of 1998, she was a volunteer fundraiser for the American Lung Association. Patricia was known for her homemade candy making and enjoyed sewing. The family includes her husband, Edward Rusboldt of Nottingham, whom she married in 1966; her mother, Henryetta (Connary) Kay of Lancaster; a son, Thomas Rusboldt of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Christina Rusboldt of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Richard Kay of Nottingham and Ronald Kay of Maynard, Mass.; two grandchildren; and two nieces. Smith Loved children, avid reader GROVETON -- Doreen H. Smith, 73, of Main Street, died on Tuesday morning, May 18, 2004, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. Doreen was born in Lancaster on December 13, 1930, a daughter of Laurence J. and Rena H. (Pierce) Smith. She was a graduate of Lancaster Academy and worked many years as a secretary at mills in Northumberland and North Stratford. Doreen loved children and enjoyed reading books. She resided many years in Lancaster and has lived in Groveton for over 30 years. Family members include her sister Arlene M. Cloutier of Groveton; three nieces, Cynthia Ledger of Groveton, Linda Maguire of Alton, and Sandra MacKillop of Whitefield; a nephew, David Currier of Lancaster; other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Burial followed in the Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster. Joseph C. Way Worked as logger, mechanic COLEBROOK -- Joseph C. Way, 41, of Spring Street, died at his home on Friday evening, May 21, 2004. Joseph was born a twin in Savanna, Ga., on December 29, 1962, the son of Harold and Ann (Cullen) Way. Raised in Lancaster he was a 1982 graduate of White Mountains Regional High School. He worked most of his life as a logger and mechanic, having been employed by Pike Industries and Nash Equipment. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, stock car racing, and outdoor activities such as snowmobiling. The family includes five children, Holly Way, Joanne Way and Joseph Way Jr. all of St. Johnsbury, and Michael Way and Hannah Way both of Dalton; two stepchildren, Caleb Sobliros and Gabriel Sobliros; his mother, Ann C. Way of Littleton; his father, Harold Way of Colebrook; six brothers and sisters, Guy Way of Littleton, James Way, his twin brother, of Colebrook, Mary Ellen Bishop of Pooler, Ga., Daniel Way of Dalton, Ann Marie Dubreuil of Lancaster, and Brad Way of Ansen, Me.; two grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Eveline Webster Homemaker, loved by family, friends LANCASTER -- Eveline Webster, 85, formerly of Lisbon, died on May 16, 2004 at the Country Village after a long battle with cancer, with her family by her side. She was born on September 9, 1918 in Newport, Vt., the daughter of George and Mabel (Gilbert) Laleme. Mrs. Webster was a homemaker. She was a strong lady and had a major impact on her family and friends. She was loved and respected by all who knew her. The family includes two sons, Marvin Webster of Lisbon and Dalton Webster of Dalton; one sister, Marguerite Young of Lincoln; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jasper H. Wood Farmer, community volunteer CONCORD, Vt. -- Albert R. Wood, 75, died on Sunday morning, May 23, 2004 at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. He was born in West Burke on July 1, 1928, a son of Herbert and Edith (Thurston) Wood. Albert grew up in South Kirby and attended the one-room schoolhouse. He attended Concord High School and left in his sophomore year to work on the family farm in South Kirby. On June 9, 1951, he married Phyllis (Morehouse) of Concord and in 1953 they purchased their own farm in Concord. Albert was a lifetime farmer and sugar maker, well known for his pride in his crops. He was a lister for the town of Concord, a selectman for 12 years, school director and a member of the Concord School Committee. Many knew Albert as a substitute mail carrier and full-time carrier, retiring in 1986 after 31 years. Other interests included membership with the Essex County Agriculture Conservation Service and a 54-year membership in the Moose River Lodge 82 F&AM. The family includes his wife, Phyllis Wood of Concord; three sons, Roger Wood and his wife Joy and Alan Wood, all of Concord, and James Wood and his wife Jennifer of Kirby; three daughters, Leslie Sanborn and her husband Cedric of Barre, Vt., Jane Bengston and her husband Douglas of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Linda Sherman and her husband Gerald of Lyndonville, Vt.; a brother, Donald Wood of South Kirby, Vt.; two sisters, Priscilla Allen and her husband Frank of Middlesex, Vt., and Marion Warden and her husband Carl of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
