Berry WWII Seabee PITTSBURG -- Albert O. Berry, 87, died on May 25, 2004 at Golden View Healthcare Center in Meredith. He was born on July 6, 1916 in Wolfeboro, the son of Albert O. Berry Sr. and Edith (Whitehouse) Berry. Mr. Berry was a graduate of Austin-Cate Academy, class of 1933. He served in the Navy during World War II in the 134 Naval Construction Battalion Seabees in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945. He worked for the town of Meredith and harvested ice from the lakes. He also worked as a logger and landscaper and he owned a small trucking firm during the 1950s and 1960s. He also owned and operated BerryÕs Fuel Company in Meredith until his retirement in 1982. Mr. Berry had resided in Pittsburg since 1981. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and also loved to fish, particularly deep sea fishing for more than 73 years. As a young man he belonged to Demolay. He was a member and past Noble Grand of Belknap Lodge 14 I.O.O.F., a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Ashland and the George L. OÕNeil American Legion Post 47 of Colebrook, a member of the National Cribbage Club and Cribbage Cohorts of Colebrook, and a lifetime member of Seabee Veterans of American Island X-4 of Laconia. The family includes a son, Gregory F. Berry of Meredith; a brother, Francis Berry of Northfield; a sister, Clara Louise Philbrick of Concord; and two grandchildren. A son, Terry D. Brown Jr. Veteran, surveyor LANCASTER -- Daniel P. Brown Jr., 75, of Elm Street, died on Friday morning, May 28, 2004, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mr. Brown was born in Lancaster on November 7, 1928, the son of Daniel P. Brown Sr. and Rena (McKaig) Brown. Dan was a 1946 graduate of Lancaster Academy. He also attended the University of New Hampshire where he acquired a degree in geology. He served with the Army and the Air Force where he acquired an associateÕs degree in aviation. For 30 years he was employed with the New Hampshire State Highway Department as a surveyor. He enjoyed building model airplanes and was a World War II buff. He was a member of John W. Weeks VFW Post #3041, Lancaster. He is survived by his longtime companion Mariellyn Chase of Lancaster, and his best friend who was like a son, Timothy Chase of Warren. David I. Brungot Loved motorcyling BERLIN -- David I. Brungot, 50, of 616 Third Avenue, died on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. He was born in Berlin on March 16, 1954, the son of Clarence and Catherine (Maines) Brungot and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Brungot was self-employed as a co-owner of the Norsemen Motorcycle Company. He was a long-time member and past president of the Road Kings Motorcycle Club and he loved to ride his motorcycle. The family includes his son, Sean Brungot of Berlin; his mother, Catherine Brungot of Berlin; two sisters, Kathy Block of Berlin and Penny Paquette of Concord; two brothers, Steven Seaborn of Bend, Ore. and John Brungot of Malakoff, Tex.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. His father, Clarence Brungot died previously. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5 at Skate Y Cat, 29 French Hill Road, Milan. Patricia Dodge Enjoyed piano and painting ORANGE CITY, Fla. -- Patricia Dodge, 60, of Orange City, a retired clerk for the town of Lancaster, died at home on May 25, 2004. Mrs. Dodge was born on Nov. 3, 1943. She moved to Florida in 1994 from her native Lancaster, where she lived on Stockwell Road. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary, both of Lancaster. She enjoyed playing the piano and painting with oil and acrylics. Family members include her husband of 33 years, Robert; two sons, Duane Dodge of Orange City and Travis Dodge of Hot Springs, Ark.; her father, Philip Stearns of Lancaster; a brother, Philip Stearns of Stark; two sisters, Diane Berube of Groveton, and Joy Potter of Stark; and two grandchildren. Howe Democrat correspondent, Weathervane devotee KEENE -- Julia R. Howe died on May 25, 2004 at Harborside Westwood nursing home in Keene, after a period of failing health. Born Julia Morrell Ridgely on Dec. 2, 1916 in Baltimore, Md. to Marguerite Callendar Hunt and Julian White Ridgely, she attended the Calvert and Bryn Mawr Schools and received a BA in French from Virginia's Sweet Briar College in 1939. While in France for her junior year, Julie earned Diplomes d'Etudes Francaises at the Universite de Poitiers and at the Sorbonne. From 1948 to 1966 Julie was a secretary and administrative assistant in the Biology Dept. at the University of Rochester (N.Y.). She then moved to New Hampshire and worked for several years as a proofreader at the Stinehour Press in Lunenburg, Vt. Settling in Whitefield's Highland House in 1981, Julie was a member of the Whitefield Historical Society and the Whitefield Advent Christian Church. She was also the town correspondent to the Cošs County Democrat for many years, where her lively columns and enthusiastic reviews of local theater productions were widely read and appreciated. Julie was especially passionate about Whitefield's Weathervane Theater, where she attended every show, every summer, for as long as she was able, always wearing one of her signature wide-brimmed hats. In recognition of her devotion and faithful literary support, the Weathervane's Board of Directors honored her with a lifetime subscription in 1992. The family includes her sister, Margaret Keith of Lancaster; her nephew, Christopher Keith of San Leandro, Calif.; and her niece, Cynthia Keith of Norwich, Vt. JuliaÕs two brothers, Ned and Tom, died in 1978 and 1999. ÒBobÓ Hughes, 88, of 2501 Howard Street died on Saturday evening, May 29, 2004 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. Mr. Hughes was born in West Warwick, R.I. on December 15, 1915, the son of John and Clara (Morris) Hughes. He was graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1939 and moved to Berlin, where he began a 43-year teaching career in the Berlin public schools. In acknowledgement of his enormous impact on the high school art department, Mr. Hughes was officially recognized by the state of New Hampshire as Teacher of the Year in 1975. In the 1960s, Mr. Hughes worked as a graphic designer and found himself the recipient of numerous awards and commissions, from then until the present. These include being a John Hays Fellow, Rhode Island School of Design Alumni of the Year in 1989 and the GovernorÕs Award as New HampshireÕs Living Treasure in 1991, as well as being featured on New Hampshire Crossroads and in the video ÒThe City That Trees Built,Ó a documentary about Berlin. Throughout his career, Mr. Hughes was an active participant in many local art celebrations, including the White Mountain Art and Music Festival, which he helped found and the North Country Chamber Players Summer Festival and Music in the Schools programs. Although primarily a sculptor, Mr. Hughes worked in all mediums, including woodcuts and design. His works are also on display in the Concord State Library, the Living TreasureÕs Gallery, and private galleries and homes. He commissioned works in the New Hampshire State Prison and the Cošs County Court House, as well as other public spaces in New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Mr. Hughes had a one-man show at Urban Architecture in New York City in June and July of 2000, and his most recent show was during May of 2001 at Artspace in Birmingham, Mich. In 2002, Mr. Hughes was chosen as one of the artists from New Hampshire to design an ornament for the White House Christmas tree. He and his wife attended a reception at the White House in December honoring the artists. He had just finished a large bird mobile for the new VeteranÕs Home in Tilton, and it was installed in the autumn of 2003. His design was chosen as part of the Percent for Art program. Mr. Hughes was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of Good Shepherd Parish. The family includes his wife, Marie (Malvaso) Hughes of Berlin; a daughter, Sharon Kruger and her husband Jurgen of Cossayuna, N.Y.; a son, Kevin Hughes and his wife Margy of Fairhaven, N.J.; a granddaughter, Patricia Whittemore and her husband Andy of New Jersey; a grandson, Nicholas Hughes and his wife Megan of Pottsdam, N.Y.; a nephew, Christopher Hughes and his wife Janice of Norfolk, Mass. His first wife, Ann (Duggan) Hughes died previously. Box 339, Berlin, NH 03570. William T. King Jr. Korean War veteran GUILDHALL, Vt. -- William T. King Jr., 71, died on Friday afternoon May 28, 2004, at Concord Hospital, Concord. Mr. King, one of 15 children, was born in North Stratford on November 2, 1932, the son of William T. and Carmen (Dupuis) King. Raised in North Stratford, he worked for a time for the Canadian Central Railroad. He went on to serve in the Army in the Korean War and was decorated with several medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. At one time he worked several years for the New Hampshire Highway Department and for 17 years he was employed with F. B. Spaulding, Lancaster, where he delivered grain. More recently he drove the Head Start bus in Groveton for six years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved cooking and gardening. Family members include his wife Charlotte (Eastman) King of Guildhall; five sons, Daniel King of Groveton, Warren King of North Chelmsford, Mass., Lindsay King of Guildhall, Brian King and David King both of Lancaster; a brother, Armand King of Lancaster; six sisters, Rita Emerson of Lancaster, Orleans Jeffers of Westbrook, Me., Gloria Brooks of Lancaster, Joyce Holden of Lebanon, Darlene Henry of North Stratford, and Carol Sibulkin of Hooksett; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Teresa Shepard Was chef at U.S. Embassy LANCASTER -- Teresa Shepard, 84, died on Monday morning May 31, 2004, at the Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster. Mrs. Shepard was born in Hungary on July 27, 1919, the daughter of Jozef and Teresa (Szeles) Dabizs. She resided many years in Hungary where she once worked as the head chef at the U.S. Embassy. She moved to the United States in 1957 residing for a time in Boston until moving to the North Country in the 1970s. For many years she lived in Lancaster residing in the Chesley Block and the McKee Inn. Family members include two sons, Joseph Shepard of Victoria, Tex., and John Shepard of Shrewsbury, Mass.; two daughter-in-laws, Shiela and Betty; five grandchildren, Joseph J. Shepard, Timothy J. Shepard, Thomas R. Shepard, John Shepard Jr., and Dawn Shepard; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Rogers, Brittany Bator, Arrick Bator, Alexandra Shepard, Anthony Shepard, Stephanie Shepard, and Alexi Shepard. Evelina White Longtime Groveton resident BERLIN -- Evelina ÒEvelynÓ (Houle) White, 98, died on May 30, 2004 at Cošs Nursing Home after an extended illness. She moved to Berlin from Groveton in May of 1997. Born on June 19, 1905 in Barford, Que., Canada, she was the daughter of Magloire and Clara (Lambert) Houle. Mrs. White was a resident of Groveton for 75 years, where she lived with her husband Harold and raised their children. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. The family includes a daughter, Pauline (White) Gendron of Berlin; a sister, Blanche Gosselin of Valleyfield, Que.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Her husband Harold died in 1952. An infant son, Harold, and son, Raymond White, two brothers, Ernest and Aldie Houle and three sisters, Eleanor Beuregard, Simone Lavoie and Mathilda Quime also died previously.
