John MacDonald Was Seabee in WWII EAST CONCORD, Vt. -- John MacDonald, 79, of Oregon Road, died peacefully on Friday morning, September 3, 2004, at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab. Mr. MacDonald was born in East Concord on June 4, 1925, the son of Harry and Cleona K. (Nichols) MacDonald. John is a lifetime resident of East Concord. He married Frances E. Whitcomb on October 6, 1942 in Lunenburg. During WWII he served with the 143rd Naval Seabees in the South Pacific Liberation. For 45 years he was employed with Gilman Paper Company/Georgia Pacific. He enjoyed snowmobiling, traveling, camping, gardening, animals, hunting and fishing. Memberships include the Loyal Order of Moose, St. Johnsbury, the Moose River Lodge #82 F&AM, Concord, and the Rock Dodgers Snowmobile Club of Concord. Family members include his wife, Frances of East Concord; four children, Natalie MacDonald Thomas and husband Donald Thomas of Fairbanks, Alaska, John M. MacDonald and companion Fern Loomis of Victory, George F. MacDonald of Fairbanks, and Mary Jo MacDonald Hale and husband Glendon Hale Jr. of Havelock, N.C.; grandchildren, Andrew Thomas, Allison Thomas Carter, Jeffrey Thomas, Ian MacDonald, Nicki Scheifer, Kim King, Ethan Hale, and Erik Hale; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard MacDonald and wife Ruth MacDonald of East Concord; a sister Lillian MacDonald Tatro and husband Peter Tatro of East Concord; several nieces and nephews. Memorial visiting hours will be held on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A memorial service will be held immediately after at 2 p.m. Rev Henry E. Cheney of St. Johnsbury, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Overlook Cemetery, East Concord. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Activities Fund, 1248 Hospital Drive
