Gilbert Korean, Vietnam War veteran WHITEFIELD -- John A. Gilbert, 73, of Lancaster Road, died on Sept. 30, 2004 at Weeks Medical Center. Born on June 25, 1931 in Boston, he was a son of George and Dorothy (Vickory) Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert attended school in Randolph, Vt. He was an Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was captured when he was 19 and was a POW for three years. He also served in the Vietnam War and had more than 20 years of active service in the Army. He was a member of VFW Howard Shawney Post 816. Mr. Gilbert worked in the maintenance department at Littleton Regional Hospital for 10 years. He loved to fish and hunt in the North Country. The family includes his wife, Jacqueline Gilbert of Whitefield; four sons, John Gilbert Jr. of Willoughby Lake, Vt., Brian Gilbert and Sean Gilbert, both of Sacramento, Calif., and Michael Gilbert of Chino, Calif.; four daughters, Sheldon Carmen of Morrisville, N.C., Holly Carmen Kachmarik of Maidstone Lake, Vt., Helen Carmen Munroe of Twin Mountain and Hope Carmen Andrews of Littleton; a brother, Phillip Gilbert of Springfield, Vt.; two sisters, Louise Burnell of Brockton, Mass., and Barbara Gilbert of Whitefield; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A calling hour was held on Oct. 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Pillsbury Funeral Home in Littleton. Roger Grimard Born in Canada LIBERTY, Ky. -- Roger Grimard, 83, of the Liberty Care Center in Liberty, Ky. and formerly of Russell Springs, Ky., died on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2004 at the Liberty Care Center. He was born on Nov. 30, 1920 in Sherbrooke, Que., Canada, the son of Vitaline (Robidoux) Grimard and Gustave Joseph Grimard. The family includes his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Fitting) Grimard of Liberty, Ky.; two sons, Ernest R. Grimard of Jefferson, N.H. and Peter W. Grimard of Jackson, N.J.; three daughters, Priscilla and husband Gary Loiacano of Penfield, N.Y., Sandra and husband Dennis DiPasquale of Holly, N.Y. and Rita and husband Richard Berg of Irondequoit, N.Y; eight grandchildren, Amy and Jason Grimard, Peter and Paul Loiacano, Wendy and Anthony DiPasquale, Richard Berg and Kathleen D'Alfonso; three brothers, Robert Grimard and Norman Grimard, both of Whitefield and Raymond Grimard of Antrim, N.H.; two sisters, Theresa Stevens of Concord, N.H. and Rita Altamuro of Houston, Tex. Following a visiting hour on Monday, Oct. 4 at the Bernard Funeral Home in Russell Springs, Ky., a funeral service was held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Jamestown, Ky., with the Rev. Dan Lincoln officiating. Burial followed in the Columbia City Cemetery in Columbia, Ky. Irene A. Halpin Enjoyed needlework and gardening LUNENBURG, Vt. -- Irene A. Halpin, 79, died on Sunday morning Oct. 3, 2004, at Country Village Health Care Center in Lancaster, N.H. She was born in Lunenburg on March 26, 1925, the daughter of Alfred J. and Malvina L. (Bilodeau) Sivegny. Irene was a lifetime resident of Lunenburg. She was a graduate of Lancaster High School and was employed for Cellucord in Gilman from 1944 to 1961. For many years she also worked at the Mary Elizabeth in Lancaster. She enjoyed making dolls, sewing, needlecraft, and gardening--especially flower gardens. She was a communicant of St. Leo's Church in Lunenburg. Family members include her husband, Glenn J. Halpin of Lunenburg; a daughter, Bette J. Robinson and her husband Edmund of Groveton, N.H.; a sister, Beatrice Timson of Lunenburg; two granddaughters, Casey Robinson and Kimberly Robinson, both of Groveton; and a very special great-grandson, Dakotah Guerin, who she affectionately called "Little Man." Her parents and other brothers and sisters died previously. A visiting hour was held on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6 (today) at St. Leo's Church in Lunenburg. The Rev. Patrick J. Forman will officiate. Horne School bus driver for 25 years GORHAM -- Marion E. (Lowe) Horne, 73, of 7 Dublin Street, Gorham, died suddenly on Friday afternoon, Oct. 1, 2004 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. She was born in Whitefield on March 27, 1931, the daughter of Gordon and Norah (Daley) Lowe of Randolph and had lived most of her life in the Berlin-Gorham area. Marion enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was active with the senior citizens in Gorham. She was a member of the Gorham Congregational Church. She was employed as a school bus driver for the city of Berlin for 25 years and had also worked at the family store, Lowe's Service Station, in Randolph. The family includes three sons, Brad Horne and his wife, Helen, Colin Horne and his wife, Dede, and Dana Horne and his wife, Diane, all of Gorham; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Vyron Lowe of Jefferson and Alan Lowe of Randolph; a sister, Carolyn Conway of Jefferson; nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours were held on Monday, Oct. 4, at the Bryant Funeral Home in Gorham. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Gorham Congregational Church, UCC, in Gorham. Interment followed in the Randolph Cemetery on Durand Road in Randolph. Mitchell Active in Groveton organizations SUN CITY, Fla. -- Lucille B. Mitchell, 92, formerly of Groveton, died on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at the Sun City Retirement Residence. She was born on Sept. 10, 1912 in Dover-Foxcroft, Me. to Clarence and Alice (Wood) Williamson. Mrs. Mitchell attended school in Pittsfield, Me. and Bristol and was graduated from Plymouth (N.H.) Normal School in 1933. She taught school in Danbury, Groveton, Stratford Hollow and North Stratford. During her years in Groveton she was very active in Eastern Star, Retired Teachers Association, Neburban Club, Dorcas Society of United Methodist Church and was President of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers' organization. In later years, she found enjoyment in composing poetry to share with her friends and family. The family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Peter Lunsford of Dunbarton; her granddaughter and husband, Lynn and Robert Bouchard of Concord, her grandson and wife, Bryan and Becky Cameron of Nashua; three great-grandchildren; her stepdaughters, Mrs. Patricia Welch of Seabrook and Mrs. Jane Sisti of Gilmanton; her stepsons, David of Grand Island, Fla., C. Thomas of Savannah, Ga., William Jr. of Hayden, Colo. and James of Hill; and their families. Her first husband, James J. Bryan and second husband, William C. Mitchell died previously, as did her daughter, Ann (Bryan) Cameron and her husband, David; a son, James J. Bryan Jr.; and two great-grandsons. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Groveton. Beulah A. Reynolds Enjoyed crafts, gardening, grandchildren WHITEFIELD -- Beulah A. Reynolds, 77, Highland Street, died suddenly on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004 at the Littleton Regional Hospital. She was born in Lancaster, the daughter of Burton and Conseulla (Burt) McLain. Mrs. Reynolds grew up in Lancaster and attended local schools, spending most of her lifetime in the Lancaster-Jefferson area. She had resided for the past 12 years in Whitefield. She enjoyed her crafts, gardening, going for long rides in the car, making her photo albums, but most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family includes her three sons and their spouses, Philip and Marilyn Reynolds of Franklin, James and Flora Reynolds of Alexandria and Timothy and Susan Reynolds of Milan; three daughters and their spouses, Brenda and William Bishop of Gorham, Pamela and Reginald Willey of Whitefield and Rebecca and Gary Evans of Boscawen; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Ball and Lillian Flynn, both of Lancaster. Her daughter, Marcella and a grandson, Timothy II died previously. Visiting hours were held at the Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, on Thursday, Sept. 30. A celebration of life was held on Friday, Oct. 1, at Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel. Burial followed at the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster. David Bruce Wallace Family man, friend, plantsman EXETER, R.I. -- David Bruce Wallace, 54, of Mockingbird Drive in Exeter, R.I., loving father, husband and friend to many, died on Thursday, Sept. 30 in a wooded area off of Flagg Road in Kingston, after a long struggle with multiple health problems. He was the husband of Susan K. (Martin) Wallace. He was born in Hartford, Conn., the son of Jean L. and Doris J. (Smith) Wallace. Having earned a BS and MS from the University of New Hampshire, Mr. Wallace was well known for his outreach efforts in the URI Cooperative Extension Service program. He co-authored articles on plant protection and coordinated a plant clinic at the URI Department of Plant Sciences. Richard Casagrande, chairman of the department, said, "Dave was well-liked, well-respected and counted on by many people in the agriculture industry in the state." Mr. Wallace was actively involved with the New England Greenhouse Growers, the R.I. Christmas Tree Association, and the R.I. Nursery and Landscape Association. He taught the Master Gardeners program at URI and received lifetime recognition as an Honorary Master Gardener. A farmer at heart, Mr. Wallace raised chickens and grew hothouse tomatoes, apples, blueberries and assorted vegetables. He coached Exeter/West Greenwich Youth Hoops and Ocean State Soccer. Beloved by his young players, he taught them that fairness and integrity are more important than winning. He had an impact on many lives, young and old. An avid reader, Mr. Wallace also was an accomplished photographer and woodworker and he loved playing the drums. The family includes his wife, Susan of Exeter, R.I.; two sons, Luke Michael Wallace and Joshua David Wallace, both at home; his father, Jean of East Windsor, Conn.; and two sisters, Barbara Fede of Feeding Hills, Mass. and Linda Wallace of Chicopee, Mass. His mother died previously. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Kingston Congregational Church in Kingston, R.I. Burial will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14 in the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster.
