Richard Beattie Lancaster Academy graduate AMHERST, Mass. -- J. Richard Beattie, 90, of 36 Hartman Road, died on Monday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. He was born in Lynn on July 26, 1914, son of the late Neal W. and Mildred M. (Morse) Beattie. He was a 1932 graduate of Lancaster Academy, in Lancaster, N.H., and a 1935 graduate of the former Mount Hermon Preparatory School in Northfield, where he and his late wife remained active in school affairs; particularly in fund raising. His education continued at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1939, followed by a master in science in 1940. Mr. Beattie became a professor at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he remained until 1974 when he retired as Associate Dean, and Associate Director of Extension in the College of Food and Natural Resources. During his tenure at the University he was instrumental in the development and implementation of a regional approach to Cooperative Extension Programs in Massachusetts. Upon his retirement in 1974, Mr. Beattie received Professor Emeritus status at the University. He also served the University of Maryland as an administrator after his retirement. He was a former member of the American Association of University Professors, former President of Massachusetts Agricultural Club, and an active member of National Extension Committee on Organization and Policy. His memberships include Epsilon Phi, an honorary extension fraternity, and Alpha Zeta Phi, Phi Sigma, and Alpha Tau Omega. His awards and citations were numerous, with many coming from agricultural and 4-H organizations throughout the state and New England. An ardent fan and supporter of athletics in Amherst, Mr. Beattie had a particular love for the youth programs, and was noticeably present at whatever sporting event was being contested at the time. He continually took time to congratulate and encourage young athletes in their efforts and accomplishments. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Amherst, a Trustee of the Fisher Home, and a former chairman of the Amherst Council on Aging. He was a town meeting member representing precinct three, and a trustee of the Eastern States Exposition. He had served as a county agricultural agent for Plymouth County and as Extension Cranberry Specialist in E. Wareham, where he had lived for 16 years. He was a member of the Pacific Lodge of Masons in Amherst, the Melha Shrine, and the Scottish Rites Bodies in Springfield. His wife, Lillian (Robinson) Beattie died previously, as well as a son, Paul W. Beattie. Family members include a daughter, Nancy C. Kosloski of Amherst; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Friday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Amherst. Bernard Worked at Gilman Paper WHITEFIELD -- Aurore “Ora” L. Bernard, 90, died at her daughter’s residence in Thornton on Monday, Dec. 13, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Tingwick, PQ, Canada, the daughter of Archibald and Rose Emma (Houle) Frechette. Mrs. Bernard had been a resident of the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, for several years, but prior to that had spent the majority of her lifetime in the Gilman-Dalton area. She was formerly employed as a twister machine operator at the former Gilman Paper Company in Gilman, Vt. for many years. She was a former member of the Altar Society of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, and the Senior Citizens group, both of Gilman. Her family includes four daughters, Doris Mickay of Harwich, Mass., Rita Boyle of Campton, Carole Allen Statesboro of Georgia and Patricia Imrie of Thornton; two brothers, Philip Bernard of Gilman, Vt. and John Bernard of Kannapolis, N.C.; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew’s Church in Whitefield on Wednesday, Dec. 15 (today) at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the St. Matthew’s Cemetery. Driscoll, 81, of Portland Street, died on Saturday morning, Dec. 11, 2004 at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mrs. Driscoll was born in Jefferson on Sept. 3, 1923, the daughter of Louis and Ida (Kenney) Samson. Raised in Jefferson, she was a 1941 graduate of Lancaster Academy. During World War II she was employed at American Bosch in Springfield, Mass. Returning to Jefferson, she was employed at the Post Office as a clerk for 26 years and as postmaster for 10 years. She had resided in Lancaster since 1946. She was a Communicant of All Saints Church, Lancaster. Family members include two sisters, Virginia Gregory of Shrewsbury, Mass. and Daphne Merrow of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Robert J. Driscoll died in 1989. Visiting hours were held on Monday, Dec. 13 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at All Saints Church, with the Rev. Fuller Rialto projectionist WEST STEWARTSTOWN -- Zane L. Fuller, 84, died on Dec. 7, 2004 at Coos County Nursing Hospital. Mr. Fuller was born on Feb. 12, 1920 in Canaan, Vt., the son of Frank A. and Lula M. (Wright) Fuller. In 1935, he moved with his family to Whitefield, and was graduated from Whitefield High School in 1939. He worked as the projectionist at the Rialto Theater until he was drafted into the Army Air Force in December of1942. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He moved to Lancaster and made his home there for five years and returned to the Rialto Theater. He later moved to North Haven, Conn., and worked for Pratt & Whitney for more than 30 years, retiring in 1982. After retirement, he returned to Canaan, Vt., and lived there until he moved to West Stewartstown in 1996. He was a member of Northland American Legion, Post 47 of Canaan, and a past member of Lake Wallace Association of Lake Wallace, Vt. Family members include three sisters, Juanita Shearer of Bradford, Vt.; Beatrice Hankins of Coca, Fla.; and her twin sister, Jane Stevens of Canaan, Vt.; many nieces and nephews. Hammond Stratford High School graduate HOLDERNESS -- Norma J. Hammond, 78, of Grapevine Cove and of 99 Clinton Street, Concord, died on Dec. 9, 2004 at Concord Hospital following cardiac surgery. She was born in West Paris, Me. on Oct. 31, 1926, a daughter of the late Samuel and Josephine (Hall) Johnson. Mrs. Hammond was raised in North Stratford, and was graduated from High School there in 1944. She later attended Plymouth Teachers College. She married Everett G. Hammond in 1947, and lived in Plymouth until moving to Holderness in 1975. Mrs. Hammond was employed by the U.S. Forest Service in Plymouth until retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. Family members include her daughter, Susan Butts and her husband, Dick of Concord; her son, David Everett Hammond and his wife, Lisa of Eagle, Colo.; grandchildren, Richard Everett Butts and Keegan Elise Hammond; sisters, Erma Sherwood of Charlotte, N.C., and Belva Graham of Bloomfield, Vt. and Dover; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Box 204, Holderness, NH 03245. Shirley H. Scott Long-time Groveton resident CONCORD -- Shirley H. Scott, 81, died on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at Concord Hospital. She was born in Groveton, a daughter of Ernest and Alice (Rogers) Hodgkins. She had lived in Groveton most of her life before moving to Concord nine years ago. Her family includes two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael R. and Cheryl Roy of Strafford and Brian W. and Diana Roy of Watson, Ariz.; two daughters, Dianne J. Roy and Deborah J. Scott, both of Concord; two grandchildren, Andrew and Paige Weatherbee; a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Carol Hodgkins of Summerville, S.C.; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Her husband, Elbert G. Scott died in 1989. A grandson, Sean Roy, four brothers--Sherwood Hodgkins, Winston Hodgkins, Ernest Hodgkins Jr. and Darrell Hodgkins, and one sister, Beverly Jewell also died previously. Edward Nash Owned Nash Equipment COLEBROOK -- Edward "Eddie" Nash, 68, died on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, after a brief illness. Born on August 17, 1936 in Stewartstown, he was the son of Frank and Gertrude (Gleason) Nash. He attended local schools in Kidderville and Colebrook Academy, after which he served three years in the Army, mostly in Korea. He married Shirley Purdham on May 24, 1958. After his discharge from the military, Mr. Nash worked on the family dairy farm for several years until he started selling used farm equipment in the early 1970s. His business, Nash Equipment, expanded to include construction equipment, logging equipment and heavy equipment of all types. Mr. Nash frequently traveled around the country buying equipment. His pride and joy was a Model A Ford. He enjoyed listening to his equipment advertisement on the radio and taking friends and customers to local establishments to listen to polka music. The family includes his wife, Shirley of Colebrook; two daughters, Susan Nash of Colebrook and Mrs. Dana (Melanie) Lynch of Columbia; two sons, Scott Nash of Colebrook and Chris Nash of Concord; a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Bonnie) Buhay of New Mexico; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Newman Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Colebrook. Scales Jr., 71, of Twin Mt. and formerly of Danville, died suddenly on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004. He was born on Oct. 24, 1933 in Tewksbury Mass., a son of Leo and Catherine (Riley) Scales. Leo was semi-retired, working as a traveling salesman for Maine Oxy Welding Supply out of Auburn Me. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed duck hunting with his boys. He loved the outdoors. His favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren. He had many friends and those who knew him know that he always had a good joke to share. The family includes his wife of 40 years, Frances; two sons, Leo J. Scales III and his wife Monica of Twin Mt. and Michael Scales and his wife Erica of Somerville, Me.; five grandchildren, John, Lauren, Gabrielle, Liam and Ian; three sisters, Jean Bando of Medford, Mass., Joan Shultz of Manchester and Margaret Hennigan of Melrose Mass.; three brothers, Francis Sprague of Everett Mass., John Sprague of Hilton Head, N.C. and Daniel Sprague of Tewksbury, Mass. Timothy Thibeault Former pastor at St. Matthew's PENACOOK -- The Rev. W. Timothy Thibeault, 60, died on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, after a period of declining health. He was born in Manchester on May 3, 1944, a son of Thomas A. and Diana (Robert) Thibeault. Fr. Thibeault attended St. Anselm College in Manchester and was graduated from Our Lady of the Angels Institute at Niagara University, Niagara, N.Y. He earned a bachelor of arts and a master of divinity degree. He was ordained into the priesthood on May 20, 1972 by Bishop Ernest J. Primeau at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. On June 3, 1972, Fr. Thibeault was appointed associate pastor of St. Matthew Parish in Whitefield. He later served as associate pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Lebanon, Queen of Peace Parish in Salem, St. John the Evangelist Parish in Concord, St. Michael Parish in Exeter and St. Joseph Parish in Salem. Fr. Thibeault was also co-director of the Concord Deanery Christian Life Center while residing at St. Thomas More Parish in Durham. On Sept. 30, 1987 he was appointed pastor of St. Jude Parish in Londonderry. Most recently, he served as pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Penacook. Fr. Thibeault was elected to serve on the Council of Priests Personnel Board by his fellow priests. He also served as chaplain to the Catholic Daughters of New Hampshire. The family includes his mother of Manchester; a sister, Suzanne Uncles of Chester; six brothers, Peter P. Thibeault of Boston, J. Thomas Thibeault of Littleton, Mass., David M. Thibeault of Manchester, Richard F. Thibeault of Manchester, Christopher D. Thibeault of Hooksett and Matthew A. Thibeault of Manchester; 12 nieces and nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
