She was born in Mt Holly, VT on January 12, 1901 the daughter of Fred M. and Helen J. (Hoyt) Pratt. She attended schools in Wallingford, VT and attended the First Baptist Church there. She married Horace A. Holden on Sept. 29, 1920 and they moved to Charlestown in June of 1939. She has resided in the same house for sixty-five years. She held the Boston Post Cane for the past several years. She retired in 1965 from Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, VT where she worked as a bookkeeper for twenty-five years. Mrs. Holden was a member for over 75 years and Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, a charter member and Treasurer for 20 years of the Charlestown Garden Club and a member and Treasurer for five years of the Senior Citizens Club. Every winter she knitted over 50 pairs of mittens for children until she was ninety-five years old. Clara was hard working and took an active part in her community, generous and caring and would always make you smile. She never had a negative thing to say about anyone. She will be missed by all who knew her and we will always be thankful for her kindness and happy spirit. She was the widow of Horace A. Holden who died July 20, 1980 and was also preceded in death by a son, H. Alfred Holden, Jr. who died Dec. 26, 1965 in Los Angeles, CA. The surviving family includes two grandsons, Mark A. Holden and Wayne F. Holden and his wife, Luna and one great-granddaughter, Nicole C. Holden all of Charlestown. Therriault, 87, of Centennial Street (formerly Eastman St.) died at his home on Saturday evening, October 2, 2004. He was a native and life long resident of Claremont, NH, born on July 22, 1917 the son of Telesphore E. and Antoinette (Archambault) Therriault. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. Mr. Therriault retired in 1979 from the Joy Manufacturing Company where he worked as a machinist for twenty-four years. He had previously worked for several years in the International Shoe Shop and retired as a foreman when it closed and also worked at the Dartmouth Woolen Mill. He enjoyed his cottage on Lake Sunapee and loved fishing, hunting, playing cards and watching TV. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was the widower of Lorraine (LeClair) Therriault whom he married on July 2, 1938 and she died December 26, 1991 and was also pre-deceased by his step-mother, Corona Therriault, who raised him. The surviving family includes, one daughter, Mrs. Ronald C. (Lillian T.) Whittemore of Claremont, one granddaughter, Deborah L. John Stanley Boyce John Stanley Boyce, 92, formerly of the Old Springfield Road in Charlestown, NH, died Saturday evening, October 2, 2004 at the Sullivan County Nursing Home. He was born in Moretown, VT on March 8, 1912 the son of John O. and Vivian (Brown) Boyce. He had been a patient at the Sullivan County Nursing Home since September of 2002 and had previously resided in Charlestown for twenty-three years and in West and East Hartford, CT for twenty years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He retired in 1977 from Travelers Insurance in Hartford, CT where he worked in the Data Center on computers and also worked at the Claremont Coke-Cola Company as a bottler for seven years. Mr. Boyce was a member of the VFW, the Charlestown Senior Center and the North Charlestown Methodist Church. The surviving family includes one nephew and several nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford H. Boyce and Robert Boyce. Caroline Howland E. Dorst Caroline Howland E. Dorst, 89, formerly of Shellar Drive in Nashua, died Saturday evening, October 2, 2004 at the Merrimack County Nursing Home. She was born in Claremont, NH on December 23, 1914 the daughter of Ernest L. and Jeffries W. (Leete) Elliott. She is a graduate of Stevens High School and Salutatorian of her class of 1932. She graduated from Middlebury College where she studied French and Music. She taught publicly and privately for many years and studied at Williams and Bennington Colleges and in Paris, France. Mrs. Dorst loved cats and her house on Otter Pond. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Pilgrim John Howland Society, the Matthay Association, and the Trinity Episcopal Church in Claremont. The surviving family includes her daughter, Tina Larochelle and her husband, David F. of Boscawen, NH; her son, John S. Florence Virginia Harris Florence Virginia Harris, 92, of Happy Acres Road in North Charlestown, NH, died Sunday morning, October 10, 2004 at her home. She was born in Prospect, VA on August 26, 1912 the daughter of George and Mary Jane (Hatchett) Carter. She was raised in Prospect, VA and graduated from Thine Institute in Chase City, VA, lived in Orange, NJ for twenty years, in East Orange, NJ for forty years and in North Charlestown with her daughter for the past five years. Mrs. Harris retired at the age of eighty-seven from the East Orange Board of Education where she was a teachers-aid for thirty-one years. She was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Orange for many years. She loved her family and enjoyed jig saw puzzles. She was the widow of Frank Anderson Harris whom she married on January 15, 1940 and he died December 12, 1998 and was also the last of six siblings. The surviving family includes one daughter, Mrs. William (Mary Ann) Murdoch of North Charlestown; one son, Frank Andrew Harris of Washington, DC; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was born in Newport, NH on March 14, 1919 the son of Joseph and Josephine (Cheloni) Bonaccorsi. He graduated from Towle High School in Newport in the Class of 1937, from Tilton Junior College in Tilton, NH in 1939 and received his BA Degree from Boston University in 1942. He enlisted in the US Army in Oct. of 1942 and was discharged in 1946 as a Master Sergeant in the Transportation Corp. After the service he lived in Cambridge, MA and for a short time worked for R.H. White Department Store. In 1948 he began his career working for Metropolitan Insurance Co. In 1954 he was promoted to the position of Sales Manager and transferred to the Claremont, NH office. He retired in 1981 having completed 33 years with the company. He served on the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Veteran’s Association and received the Outstanding Veteran’s Award. He was a graduate of Life Underwriters Training Council, LUTC, and was an instructor of LUTC classes for ten years. He received the Chartered Life Underwriters degree and was the Charter President of the Twin State Life Underwriters Association. He was on the Claremont City Council from 1963 to 1968, received the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award, was a member of the School Board of St. Mary High School and a Past President of the P.T.O., Chairman of the Cancer Crusade for Claremont for several years, chairman of the Boy Scout Campaign, served on the Hospice Executive Board and served on the Board of Trustees for the Claremont General Hospital. He was a former member of Father Cote Council Knights of Columbus and a former member and Past President of Kiwanis. The surviving family includes his wife, Rebecca I. (Ahde) Bonaccorsi of Claremont whom he married on November 4, 1944; two daughters, Ann Fontaine and her husband, Glenn of Newport and Paulina Griesbach of Burlington, Ontario Canada; two sons, Thomas Bonaccorsi and his wife, Kathleen, of Lee, NH and Peter Bonaccorsi and his wife, Elizabeth, of Washington, DC; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Emily Bonaccorsi, Ethan and Lauren Griesbach, and Hilary Bonaccorsi, also nieces and nephews. Harold L. Blodgett (see photo - http://www.usgwarchives.net/nh/obits/photos/2004/blodgett_harold_l.jpg) Harold L. Blodgett, 90, died peacefully at his home on the morning of October 16, 2004. Mr. Blodgett had been lovingly cared for by his family. He was born December 23, 1913 in Charlestown to Elsie (Phelps) Blodgett and George Blodgett. Mr. Blodgett was the oldest of eight children. He attended Charlestown school and left school at an early age to go to work to help support his family. During the Depression he was a member of Civilian Conservation Corps and helped to build fire roads in the White Mountains near the Kancamagus Highway. Harold joined the U.S. Army and among other assignments was stationed at Hickham Field at Pearl Harbor during the attack on Pearl Harbor. All of his service was in the Pacific Theatre. Harold was a life-time member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, a long-time member of the Charlestown Congregational Church where he served as a trustee and as a member of the Stewardship Committee. He served as Finance Officer for the local American Legion post and was a life-time member of the local VFW. His employment history was long and colorful working in woolen mills, plumbing and heating, greenhouses, Keil Lock and at Charlestown schools. His most enjoyable and his last job was with the Charlestown Water Department where he had close friends and co-workers. As "Grampa" he cared for his four grandchildren while their parents worked. He was also a "Grampa" figure to many children throughout his life. Harold was a history buff and many students benefited from his knowledge of World War II and Charlestown history. He was very well read but his worn copy of Sherlock Holmes was a favorite. He did the crossword puzzles in several daily newspapers until very recently. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris (Goodell) Blodgett whom he married in November of 1944. He is survived by his two daughters, Mary-Ann and her husband John Conly of Plainfield, NH and Barbara Jean and her husband Philip Jellie of Manchester, NH and four grandchildren: Susan Podeswa of San Antonio, TX, Mandy Spieker of Whitman Air force Base and Knob Noster, MO, Linda diBrandi of Madison, NH and Joshua Wakefield of Worcester, MA; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was an E-5 in the Windsor Vermont Army National Guard. Roger was the supervisor of the window department at the Newport LaValley's Building Supply Store and had previously worked at Customized Structures, Inc. and several years as a self employed carpenter. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Claremont Country Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed playing horseshoes. He was an avid hunter and golfer. He especially loved his family. She was born in Manchester, NH on October 18, 1964 and resided in Newport, NH. Cynthia graduated from Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro, VT in June of 1983. She spent most of her time volunteering at the local Senior Center where she enjoyed playing cribbage and pekeno. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, puzzles, movies, playing cards and spending time with her family, especially her daughter and grandson. He lived in Charlestown and Claremont on and off for thirty years, lived in Hartford, CT from 1960 to 1997 when he went to the Sullivan County Nursing Home in Unity. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. Mr. Bailey was a truck driver at various places. He married the former Vena Merrill, still living in Charlestown, on March 9, 1946 and they are now divorced. The surviving family includes one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth H. She was born in Sioux City, Iowa on April 20, 1962 the daughter of Terry Eugene and Lois Mae (Hill) Mace, Sr.. She had resided in Claremont since 1992 and previously lioved in Sunapee and New Jersey. Tammy worked as a visual designer at Fashion Bug in Newport and previously for Shoe East in Newport and as a waitress at Joey's in Claremont. She loved knitting, crafts, computers and traveling. The surviving family includes her husband, John Murray Grossi of Claremont whom she married on March 9, 1991; two sons, Jason M. Grossi and Anthony M. Grossi both of Claremont; one step-son, John David Grossi of North Bergen, NJ; her mother, Lois Mae Poulos of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers, Terry Eugene Mace, Jr. of Sioux City, Iowa, Christopher W. Leo Robert Burke (see photo - http://www.usgwarchives.net/nh/obits/photos/2004/burke_leo_robert.jpg) Leo Robert "Bob" Burke, 79, of Bank Avenue in Claremont, died Monday afternoon, October 25, 2004 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. He was born in Newport, NH on January 31, 1925 the son of Henry and Lura (Roberts) Burke and had resided in Claremont most of his life. He attended schools in Newport and was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy on the USS Stembel. Mr. Burke retired due to disability in 1973 from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Windsor, VT where he worked as a fork lift operator for thirty-one years. He loved making wooden animals, talking on the "CB" radio where he was known as "Bucklure", also enjoyed hunting and feeding the birds and animals. The surviving family includes his wife, Helen (Madeja) Burke of Claremont whom he married on May 31, 1952 in St Joseph Church; one son, Robert Burke and his wife, Jennifer of Claremont; one daughter, Jane Hamilton and her husband Mark of Fayetteville, GA; four grandchildren, Erica, Stephanie and Spencer Burke and Rieley Hamilton; one brother, Norbert Burke and his wife, Fay of Newport; four nephews and one niece. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Walter Burke, Henry Burke and William Burke. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning, October 30th at Ten-Thirty in St Joseph Church with Rev. Father Stanley J. Piwowar, Pastor, officiating. Interment with full military honors provided by the Newport American Legion will follow in St Mary Cemetery in Claremont. Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral home on Saturday morning from 9 to 10 AM prior to the Mass. Stanley Carl Wilson (see photo - http://www.usgwarchives.net/nh/obits/photos/2004/wilson_stanley_carl.jpg) Stanley Carl Wilson, 81, of Eric Place in Pine Hill Mobile Home Court, died Tuesday afternoon, October 26, 2004 at the Claremont Health and Rehab. He was born in Richmond, NH on August 3, 1923 the son of Carter and Freda (Westine) Wilson. He attended schools in Chester, VT, lived in Springfield, VT for forty-four years and in Claremont for the past four years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army-Air Force. Mr. Wilson retired in 1987 from Lovejoy Tool Company of Springfield, VT, where he worked for thirty-nine years as a supervisor and chief inspector. He was a member of the Springfield Moose Lodge and the Bartonsville Grange. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, hunting, dancing and playing the guitar and loved spending tine with his family and having fun. The surviving family includes his wife, Dorothy Ellen (Morris) Wilson of Claremont whom he married on April 24, 1943; two daughters, Sandra Laflamme and her husband Ted of Springfield, VT and Luana Reynolds and her husband Scott of Claremont; four grandchildren, Edward Laflamme, Kimberly Dishman, Kara Harford and Trapper Reynolds; three great-grand-children, Amanda, Matthew and Brendan Dishman also nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Gerald Wilson and a sister, Ione Fontaine. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, October 29th at One-thirty in the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont. John Melendy Pinette John Melendy Pinette, 77, of Winter Street, Claremont, died Monday evening, October 25, 2004 at his home. He was a native and life long resident of Claremont, NH, born on March 30, 1927 the son of John Baptiste and Louise Caroline (Ahrens) Pinette. He was a graduate of Stevens High School in the Class of 1946 where he excelled in football for four years. John enlisted in the US Navy medical Corp upon graduation and served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge he was employed by the US Post Office for thirty-three years, retiring on July 1, 1984. Dogs and horses were his hobbies. He was Past President and board member of the Woodstock, VT Dog Club, with his wife, helped found two Appaloosa Horse Clubs (NH&VT). He was also a Life Member of the NRA and the Bonoi Club of America having bred an all champion kennel ("Gwejon") known world-wide. The surviving family includes his wife, of fifty-one years of marriage, Gwendolyn (Fitzgerald) Pinette; one daughter, Lori Diane Pinette and one granddaughter, Nicole Pinette all of Claremont. Funeral services will be held Monday morning, Nov. 1st at Eleven O'clock in the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street with Stephen Cook, Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Interment with military honors will be held Tuesday morning, Nov. 2nd at Eleven O'clock in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. Lucille M. Marcotte Lucille M. Marcotte, 85, of Apopka, FL, formerly of 199 Pleasant Street in Claremont, NH, died October 24, 2004 in Florida. She was born in Conventry, VT on December 14, 1918 the daughter of Elphee and Atonia (Gagnon) Desbiens. Mrs. Marcotte had been a member for many years of Court Virgil H. Barber #892 Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the St Anne Society and the Green Mountain Home Extension. She was the widow of Roland F. Marcotte who died January 5, 1985. The surviving family includes one daughter, Pauline Wheeler of Delta Junction, Alaska; two sons, Norman Marcotte of Lady Lake, FL and Dennis Marcotte of Greensboro, NC; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Beaumier of Newport, VT and several nieces an nephews. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning, Nov. 4th at Eleven O'clock in St Mary Church in Claremont. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery in Claremont.
