Makinen (see photo - http://www.usgwarchives.net/nh/obits/photos/2004/makinen_oscar_j.jpg) Oscar J. Makinen, 75, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, NH following a long illness. Oscar was born August 21, 1929 in Westmoreland, NH. He was the first son of John and Gertrude (Norcross) Makinen. His father came through Ellis Island from Finland in the early 1900's. Oscar was always proud of his Finnish heritage. He attended the Westmoreland South Village School through 8th grade and then graduated with Mechanical Honors from Keene High School in 1947. As a child he was active in the 4-H program, including being a camp counselor. Following High School, Oscar worked at Hinkle's Tool & Dye Maker in Keene. On November 1, 1950, he joined the Air Force for four years. He received his training in electronics in Wyoming where he graduated top in his class. He was then stationed in Newfoundland for 2 years where he helped to maintain the American telephone circuits for the government and the railroad. He completed his service commitment in North Carolina. On November 21, 1953, he married Irene "Peg" Daigneault. Many family members and friends helped them celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 2003. Following his time in the service, he returned to Hinkle's Tool & Dye Maker in Keene and then worked at Hick's Machine Shop in Walpole. He began working for IBM in 1955 and retired after 35 years of service. He lived in Concord and then Hudson until 1966 when he and his family moved to Lover's Lane in Charlestown. They resided at this location until 2003 when he and his wife moved to Walpole. Oscar has a long history of community service, for which he was proudly honored by the Charlestown Rotary's "Service Above Self Award" in 1999. He served the town of Charlestown in many capacities including: Selectman from 1971 to 1974 and again in 1979 to 1984, the Planning Board from1969 to 1972, the Planning Board ex-officio in 1973, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1984, the Finance Committee from 1973-1979 and from 1990-1998, the Building Inspector and Zoning Administrator from 1977-1987, the Conservation Commission ex-officio in 1978, the Zoning Board of Adjustment - alternate from 1989-2002 and the Zoning & Planning Regulation Committee from 1984 - 1985. In 1982, Oscar developed the "Help the Town Program", requiring that able-bodied persons receiving assistance work off their aid payments. The program is a successful one to this day allowing participants to build skills and self-assurance. Oscar's willingness to serve Charlestown, in the various elective and appointed positions mentioned, is but a small testimony to his interest in, and support for his community, constantly exhibited but not noted by way of official record. There are few days when Oscar did not come into the office to design a piece of software or to work the bugs out of one someone else didn't quite finish. He served as training consultant for new employees, having a wealth of history and experience to impart, to avoid a need to "reinvent the wheel" but was always receptive to ideas which might improve upon standard practice. And, while it is difficult to assign a number to the countless hours of this informal volunteerism which Oscar had donated over the years, one can honestly say that he was always there when he was needed. In 1994 he received the NH Municipal Association Outstanding Volunteer Award. He served on the Fall Mountain Regional School District school board from 1974 to 1978. He enjoyed the outdoors especially gardening. Oscar was a great collector of many things. He was a member of the Pieces of Eight Square Dance Club. He enjoyed working on anything mechanical or electronic including computers, which he did for many people in the area. He also enjoyed visiting and talking about politics. He was a member of the Charlestown Congregational Church for many years. The surviving family includes his wife, Irene; one daughter, Norma Jeanne and her husband Adrian Pinney of W. Swanzey; one son, Ronald Makinen and his wife Tammy Vittum of Walpole; five grandchildren: Brandon Pinney of Washington, DC, Ethan Pinney of Swanzey, NH, Erin Pinney of W. Swanzey, Karri Makinen and Joshua Makinen of Walpole, NH; one brother, Arnold Makinen and his wife Sylvia of Westmoreland, a brother-in-law, Dick Delano of Westmoreland and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
