WINSTON BANFILL Mr. Winston E. Banfill, 82, of Columbia, died suddenly on Friday morning, January 7, 2005 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital. Mr. Banfill was born on April 6, 1922 at Kerr's Hospital, formerly Nugent's Filling Station, in Colebrook, son of the late George and Bernice (Bennett) Banfill. He was a graduate of Canaan High School in 1939 and later was graduated from Lyndon Normal School in 1941. He moved to Wolcott, Vt., and taught school for one year, then enlisted in the Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1946 he returned to the North Country to farm, and continued farming until his retirement in 1978. Mr. Banfill then owned and operated the Idle Inn Dairy Bar, and operated a farm machinery business. He enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens and would often give his gladiolus and other flowers to friends and family members. He was a past member of the Benton Lodge #88, F&AM in Guildhall, Vt. Mr. Banfill is survived by his stepmother, Muriel Daicy of Lancaster; three nieces, Patricia L. Banfill of Clarksville, Marie E. Banfill of Louisville, Ky., and Gail Lewis of Concord; four cousins, Edgar Bennett of Lisle, Ill., Karen Bennett of Studio City, Calif., David Bennett of N. Hollywood, Ill., and Claire Young of Colebrook; and a god-daughter, Nancy Baird of Brossard, Quebec. Mr. Banfill is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George Banfill and Gordon Banfill. Calling hours were held on Sunday afternoon, January 9, followed by a funeral service in the afternoon at Jenkins Funeral Home, with The Reverend Priscilla Hull officiating. A Masonic graveside service conducted by Evening Star Lodge #37 F&AM will be held in the spring at the Colebrook Village Cemetery, with military honors to follow. KAREN DICKSON Karen Lee (Mitchell) Dickson, 50, of Rochester, died peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2005 at her home. Born on March 18, 1954 in Manchester, she was the daughter of Paul and Ruth (Beard) Mitchell. Mrs. Dickson was graduated from the Sacred Heart Nursing College in Manchester. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Frisbie Memorial Hospital and the Rochester Manor. She loved being a nurse and was heartbroken when her illness made her unable to work. She was a very active volunteer advocate, assisting families with children with disabilities. She enjoyed riding snowmobiles, gardening, the outdoors, camping, quilting, making crafts, flowers, and the companionship of her dogs. She was an avid hockey mom, loved to fly fish and spend time up at her camp in Pittsburg, and most of all, spending every moment possible with her granddaughter. Members of her family include her husband of 29 years, James A. Dickson of Rochester; her sons, James A. Dickson II of Dover and Adam Dickson and his fiancée Stephany Collins of Somersworth; her father, Paul Mitchell of Manchester; a sister, Brenda LaPointe and her husband Bud of Sanbornton; two brothers, David Mitchell and his wife Kathy of Pace, Fla., and Steven Mitchell and his wife Suzanne of Derry; a granddaughter and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, Ruth Mitchell, and a brother, Gary Mitchell. Calling hours were held on Sunday afternoon and evening at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home in Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday morning at St. Mary's Church in Rochester, with Fr. Pierre Baker as Celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery on Lowell Street, Rochester, in the spring. VERTORINE HORNER Vertorine Horner, 82, of Canaan, died at Genesis Health in Lancaster on Monday, January 10, 2005. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, January 14 at the Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Satur-day, January 15 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Canaan. A full obituary will appear in next week's paper. DOROTHY KILMER Dorothy R. Kilmer, 71, of Whitefield died on January 9, 2005 at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster. Born on February 28, 1933 in Littleton, she was the daughter of Harry and Ellen Sidney, and attended Littleton schools. She worked for Connors Footwear and Henschel's Shoe for many years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. The family includes a son, Andrew Kilmer of Littleton; three daughters, Edna Ellis of Stewartstown, Zina Schmidt of Whitefield and Tara Kilmer of Hampton, Va.; two brothers, Raymond Sidney of Bethlehem and Ernest Sidney of Florida; a sister, Ila Hoar of Barnett, Vt.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephew. One son predeceased her. A graveside memorial service will be held on May 20 at Glenwood Cemetery at 2 p.m. Pillsbury Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Inc., is handling arrangements. JOSEPH MARKOVICH Mr. Joseph Markovich, age 94, of Berlin, died on Tuesday afternoon, January 4, 2005 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, where he had been admitted as a patient. He was born in Berlin on February 14, 1910, the son of Joseph and Mary Truka Markovich. A lifelong resident of Berlin, he was a former member of St. Kieran Parish, now known as Good Shepherd Parish. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as president of B&J Lincoln-Mercury Auto Sales. He had also worked at the Brown Company Bermico Mill and at the Brown Company Offices. He attended St. Patrick School and was a graduate of Berlin High School. He greatly enjoyed woodworking, a craft at which he was very good, and had completed many numerous projects in his craft. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Irene (Ouellet) Markovich of Berlin; a sister, Rose Dion of Colebrook; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a sister, Mary Lovejoy. Calling hours were held last Tuesday at the Fleury-Patry Funeral Home in Berlin. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Thursday at St. Anne of Good Shepherd Parish; interment followed at Calvary Cemetery. DAVID PATRICK David Knox Patrick, age 76, of Canaan died on January 3, 2005 in Canaan. He was born in Hinesburg, Vt., he was the son of John Hayward and Elizabeth Booth Patrick. He was a 1960 graduate of the University of Maine with a bachelor of science in wildlife management and forestry. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara Marsett Patrick; a son, William Gordon Patrick; a daughter, Victoria Patrick Zolnoski; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Patrick; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many friends. He truly enjoyed the road of life. Funeral arrangements will be private and at the family's discretion. Remembrances may be made to the charity of one's choice.
