Noseworthy Outstanding athlete WHITEFIELD -- Frederick A. Noseworthy, 93, died on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005. He was born on Dec. 10, 1911 in Montreal, Que., Canada, a son of Frederick and Ella (Angel) Noseworthy. Mr. Noseworthy was graduated from Beebe Junior High School in Malden, Mass. and Bridgton Academy in Maine. He attended New York University. He excelled in all sports as a youth, setting Canadian national records in snowshoe racing, as well as winning many speed skating and track events throughout his teens and 20s in the Northeastern United States. He and his younger brother, Eric appeared often on programs at the Boston Garden and Madison Square Garden as skating clowns and giving barrel jumping exhibitions. As a professional in baseball, he worked out for two seasons with the Boston Braves as a utility infielder and played minor league ball throughout the east. He established and ran the Fred Noseworthy All-American Ski School in Plymouth in the 1930s and 1940s, offering instruction in the American style of skiing, a blend of Austrian and Swiss movements. His early business experience included service with the Daniel Webster Council of Boy Scouts of America, prior to his long career in the insurance business. Starting as a field supervisor with Union Mutual, Mr. Noseworthy later moved to the Travelers Insurance Company where he managed operations in Worcester, Mass., Cleveland, Ohio and Boston, Mass., retiring in 1971. Mr. Noseworthy was well known in amateur golf circles. He was the former club champion at Cocheco Country Club, Rochester Country Club and Laconia Country Club, as well as the Manakiki Country Club in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. He was also a senior champion at the Duston Country Club in Hopkinton and belonged to many state and regional senior golf organizations. He was a member of the Mason Mount Lebanon Lodge No. 32 for more than 60 years. Family members include a son, Frederick N. Noseworthy of California; a daughter, Lee Williams of Franconia; three grandchildren; three sisters, his twin, Freda Gettman and Phyllis Daley, both of Melrose, Mass. and Frances Barclay of Topsfield, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Janet (Neal) Noseworthy, whom he married in 1941, died on Dec. 11, 2004. A brother, Eric and a sister, Bernice also died previously. A memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Noseworthy will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Littleton, with the Rev. Barbara Thrall officiating. Carlie Masters Boudle Lancaster Academy graduate WEST STEWARTSTOWN -- Carlie Masters Boudle, 85, formerly of Lancaster, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at the Cošs County Nursing Hospital. She was born in Lancaster on July 8, 1919, the daughter of Irving W. and Lilla (Masters) Boudle. Carlie was a graduate of Lancaster Academy and went on to attend nursing school in North Adams, Mass. Her many jobs included employment at Mellin-Quincy Mfg. Co. and also Streeter's Laundry, both in Whitefield. She also worked at Jefferson Nursing Home, caring for the elderly, returning to Lancaster to work in various residential homes. Carlie was one of the first members and attendants at Lancaster Assembly of God, which was her church home. Her favorite pastimes were embroidering, writing to or calling on friends, and homemaking. She especially enjoyed making large meals for family gatherings. While working at times for Peaslee's Potatoes in Guildhall, she gained the reputation of one of the fastest potato pickers in the area. Surviving family members include two brothers, Cleo W. Boudle and his wife Bernice of Warren, Me. and Henry J. Boudle of West Burke, Vt.; two sisters, Gladys L. (Boudle) Ingerson and husband Carroll of Jefferson and Beverly (Boudle) Wright and husband Stanley of Groveton; plus many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held on Thursday afternoon and evening, Dec. 30 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service was held on Friday afternoon at the funeral home, with the Rev. Curtis Smith of Lancaster, along with The Rev. Gary Clark, pastor of the Columbia Assembly of God, officiating. Burial followed in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. Marguerite McMurtrie-Bean Chair of English Dept. at WMRHS YARMOUTH, Me. -- Marguerite McMurtrie-Bean, 75, of 378 Portland St., Yarmouth and formerly of Randolph, died on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 at Brentwood Nursing and Rehabilitation in Yarmouth. She was born on May 16, 1929 in Gorham, the daughter of Douglas M. and Madeline (L'Empereur) McMurtrie and lived in the Gorham-Randolph area before moving to Maine several years ago. Marguerite attended Gorham schools and the University of New Hampshire and obtained an MA in English. She was chairman of the English Department at White Mountains Regional High School and loved to teach. She loved music, playing the trumpet, painting and the mountains. She was an incredible all-around athlete and enjoyed swimming, baseball and golf. She came in 13th in a National Golf Tournament in Virginia in the 1960s. She was a member of the Gorham Congregational Church, UCC in Gorham, the National Teachers Association and the Androscoggin Valley Country Club in Gorham. Members of the family include three children, Richard Bean of Randolph, Jody Flynn-Dalvet and her husband Stephen of Portland, Me. and Jeffrey Bean of Thomaston, Conn.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Robert McMurtrie and his wife Francoise of Michigan, George McMurtrie and his wife Ruth of Nevada and David McMurtrie and his wife, Virginia of Massachusetts; a sister-in-law, Claude McMurtrie of Massachusetts; nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin, Nicole O'Hara. She had a special family relationship with the Edward Fenn family. Her brother, Richard McMurtrie died previously. Funeral services were held on Jan. 2 at the Gorham Congregational Church, UCC. Interment will be in the Lary Cemetery in Gorham. Relatives and friends were invited to call at the Bryant Funeral Home in Gorham on Saturday evening. Helen F. Cassady Housekeeper, enjoyed her grandchildren DALTON -- Helen F. Cassady, 77, died on Monday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2004 at Littleton Regional Hospital, Littleton. She was born in Lisbon on Aug. 13, 1927, the daughter of Leonard and Martha (Baines) Wessels. Helen was raised in the Franconia area where she was graduated from Dow Academy. For a time she was employed at Gilman Paper Company and was a housekeeper for the Conners in Sugar Hill for over 25 years. For many years she and her husband, Arthur B. Cassady, resided in Lancaster and they had lived in Dalton for the past nine years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was also member of the VFW Auxiliary in Littleton. Family members include her husband of 50 years, Arthur B. Cassady of Dalton; four sons, William Wessels of Bethlehem, Andrew Wessels of Worcester, Mass., Daniel Cassady of Berwick, Me. and Donald Cassady of Whitefield; two daughters, Denise Sheldon of Hooksett and Darlene Curley of North Stratford; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wilfred Wessels of Franconia and John Wessels of Littleton. Her sister, Katherine Splude died previously. There will be no calling hours. A memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8 at All Saints Church, Lancaster. The Reverend Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in North Monroe Cemetery, Monroe. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice. Janice W. Davis Born on Pioneer Farm COLEBROOK -- Janice W. Davis, 75, of Route 26, Colebrook, died suddenly early Friday morning, Dec. 31, 2004, at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital. She was born at the Pioneer Farm in Columbia on April 4, 1929, a daughter of Lew and Gladys (Clark) Wallace. Mrs. Davis graduated from Colebrook Academy, Class of 1947, and received a bachelor's degree in home economics from Nasson College. She married Perley E. Davis on Oct. 21, 1951, and loved caring for her family as a homemaker. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed making Christmas wreaths and flower arrangements for family and friends. She also enjoyed bird watching, especially bluebirds. Mrs. Davis was Past Worthy Matron of Eureka Chapter #2 O.E.S. of Colebrook, and Past Grand Organist of the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire O.E.S. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and was especially proud of her four granddaughters. The family includes her husband of 53 years, Perley E. Davis of Colebrook; a daughter, Julie Colby and husband David of Colebrook; a son, Tim Davis and partner Tony of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Beth Young of Columbia and Sis Dugas of Barnstable, Mass.; four granddaughters, Melissa Boire, Jacie Colby, Hannah Colby and Tia Mcdonald-Davis; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her son, Peter Davis died in 1959; a brother, Lew Wallace Jr. and a sister, Ione Young also died previously. Calling hours were held on Sunday, Jan. 2 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. An Eastern Star Service followed, conducted by Eureka Chapter #2 O.E.S. of Colebrook. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Colebrook Village Cemetery. Dunham Wife, mother, grandmother GILMAN, Vt. -- Brenda Joyce (Griggs) Dunham, 53, of Jefferson Ave., died at her home on Wednesday morning, Dec. 29, 2004, after a long illness. She was born in East Charleston, Vt. on July 17, 1951, a daughter of Raymond Burton and Myrtle Mae (Woodard) Griggs. As a child, Brenda attended school in Island Pond, Vt. She attended Junior High and High School in Southwick, Mass. She loved visiting her grandchildren, fishing with her husband, and collecting and sharing old and new family pictures with her family. She also enjoyed collecting stuffed animals. Family members include her husband, Raymond Dunham of Gilman, Vt.; a son, Carl Dunham and his wife Shannon of West Springfield, Mass.; two granddaughters, Maya and Marissa Dunham; three sisters, Mary Savino of Manchester, Conn., Betty Sweeney and her husband Ray of West Springfield, Mass., Fay Moore and her husband Fred of Brownington, Vt.; a brother, Gordon Griggs of Manchester, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont. Henry E. Cheney, pastor of the Gilman Methodist Church, officiated. Catherine W. Hicks Devoted to family LUNENBURG, Vt. -- Catherine W. Hicks, 79, of Tobyne Road, died suddenly on Thursday morning, Dec. 30, 2004 at Holton Point in Lancaster. She was born on July 24, 1925, the daughter of Francis Neville and Wyola Catherine (Shaw) Wechtel. Catherine married Walter Bartlett Hicks Jr. on April 22, 1946 and they settled in Sea Cliff, Long Island, N.Y. After Walter retired in the early Ô80s, they moved to Lunenburg, Vt. to be near their daughter, Virginia "Bonnie" VanDamm and family. Catherine had been a resident of Holton Point since August of 2004. The family includes a granddaughter, Elizabeth Bochtler and husband Edward of Reston, Va.; a grandson, Bradley VanDamm and wife Jennifer of Gray, Me.; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Alexander, Nathan Paul, Benjamin Karl, Christopher James Bochtler, and Bonnie Olivia VanDamm; and a few nieces and nephews. Her husband, Walter, died in April 2003 and her daughter, Bonnie died in November 1989. There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. The Rev. Gerry Piper of Orleans, Vt. will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in South Lunenburg. Shirley M. Kimble Born in Groveton LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Shirley M. Kimble, 85, died on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 in Lakewood, Colo. She was born on Dec. 9, 1919 in Groveton, a daughter of Joseph S. Beaton and Celia (Wilson) Beaton. The family includes her brother, Robert Beaton of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Merle K. Kimble, a sister, Geraldine Hicks and two brothers, Franklin Beaton and Paul Beaton died previously. Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 7 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Lakewood, Colo. Interment will be in Olinger Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colo. George Andrew Langley Jr. WWII Navy veteran; past selectman GROVETON -- George ÒPopÓ Andrew Langley Jr., 83, of Groveton, died on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004 at Cošs County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown with his family by his side, after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Born on Feb. 6, 1921 in Whitefield, the son of George Andrew and Althea (Willey) Langley, he was a lifelong resident of Groveton until he became a resident at Cošs County Nursing Hospital in May of 2000. Pop was a graduate of Groveton High School, class of 1939. He was a Navy Seabee, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Gilkey Lodge #101 F & AM, Groveton and the American Legion Fredonwarell Post #17, Groveton. Before retiring, he owned and operated Langley's General Insurance for 35 years before selling to G.M. Stevens in 1976, and he worked for them until 1995. He was one of the founders of ÒCans for KidsÓ and worked with that for several years. He was a past Sweepstakes Commissioner for 18 years; served on the Groveton School Board for many years; was a past president of the PTA. He was a past selectman and served on the Groveton Foundation for several years. He was very active in the Methodist Men's Club and community volunteer services. He was very active in politics. Pop loved to play cards, go for walks, visit with his friends and collect coins and political pins. The family includes his wife of 63 years, Eleanor M. (Blay) Langley of Groveton; a daughter, Carol Ann Lavigne of Groveton; two sons, Dennis Langley of Groveton and George A. ÒAndyÓ Langley III of North Conway; three grandchildren, Carla Vaughan, Stephanie Langley and John Bockman; two great-granddaughters, Ashley Vaughan and Jessica Vaughan; one sister, Carolyn Hebert of Manchester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours were held on Monday, Jan. 3 at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton; the American Legion and the Gilkey Lodge recited prayers in the evening. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at the Groveton United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will be in the spring in the Northumberland Cemetery. Smith Sr., 81, of Sand Street, died on Wednesday morning, Dec. 29, 2004 at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. He was born in Lancaster on March 29, 1923, the son of Israel and Beatrice (Emery) Smith. Fred was a lifetime resident who worked for 39 years in paper manufacturing. For many of those years he was employed at the Northumberland Mill and later worked for a time in Groveton and Stratford. He also ran a small engine repair shop out of his home. During World War II, he served with the Marine Corps and was a member of the John W. Weeks VFW Post #3041, Lancaster. Fred also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was particularly good at hunting bear. Family members include two sons, Kenneth F. Smith of Auburn and Frederick I. Smith Jr. of Lancaster; a half-sister, Eleanor Vidito of Plainfield, Vt.; a brother-in-law, Clarence Scott of Lancaster; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. His wife, Marion Victoria Smith, a son, Richard E. Smith and a daughter, Sylvia Smith died previously. Visiting hours were held on Friday, Dec. 31 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster.
