Wayne Carter, 69, of Claremont and Gloucester, Mass., died Friday morning Jan. 7, 2005,of a heart attack at his Claremont home. He was born in Concord, June 16, 1935, the son of Allen Carter and Ursula (Cushing) Carter. Mr. Carter graduated from Penacook High School and studied at the University of New Hampshire where he joined the U.S. Army ROTC program. He was a patrolman with the Concord Police Department and was employed as an i nvestigator with the Pinkerton Detective Agency of Boston. During his law enforcement career, Mr. Carter also served as interim Police Chief at the Charlestown Police Department. In the early 1960’s, Mr. Carter was in management at Dorr Woolen Company. He was also the Education and Information Officer for the N.H. Fish and Game Department for several years. His love for the outdoors was memorialized in hundreds of photos over the years. He captured every aspect of life - from tragedies to human triumphs – in photos taken for several newspapers. During the past 40 years, Mr. Carter was employed as staff photographer at the Hartford (Conn.) Times and the Claremont Eagle-Times. He was also a correspondent for The Union Leader and New Hampshire Sunday News. He won many awards, including the International Association of FireFighters Best Photo of the Year Award in 2002 for a photo of a firefighter rescuing a child who had fallen through the ice. He was an active member of the New England Outdoor Writers’ Association and was a director of the Winni Derby, an annual fishing derby on Lake Winnipesaukee. Survivors include four daughters, Kelly Carter-Currier and her husband, Jack, of Nashua; Wendy Carter-Downing and her husband, Cullen, of Claremont; Cathy Carter-Donovan and her husband, Tim, of Unity and Toni Carter-Quinney of Meredith; his sister, Shirley King of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a brother, Laurence Martel of Hilton Head, S.C.; five grandchildren, Daniel Miller Jr., Matthew Miller and Danielle Miller, all of Claremont; Courtney Quinney and Timothy Quinney of Meredith; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends, including his former wife, Carol Carter of Meredith. Mr. Carter is also survived by a special friend, Carole Carlson, of Gloucester, Mass., where he enjoyed walking the beaches and photographing the Tall Ships. He was predeceased by his father, Allen; his mother, Ursula Carter-Martel and his stepfather, Leo Martel. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Union Cemetery in Claremont. The Rev. Laurence Wilson of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate. A reception will follow at the Claremont Eks Lodge. A scholarship for Stevens High School graduates pursuing a photography career will be established in Mr. Carter’s memory. Vogell, 84, formerly of Mineral Street in Springfield, VT, died January 12, 2005 at the Springfield Convalescent Center in Springfield, VT. She was born in Claremont, NH on August 24, 1920 the daughter of Charles H. and Bessie Maude (Hart) Dufield and had resided in Springfield, VT most of her life. Mrs. Vogell was a member of the American Baptist Church in North Springfield and also the grange. She was the widow of her first husband, Frank Ward and her second husband, Rev. Frederick W. Vogell, Jr.. The surviving family includes one son, Frank Albert Ward, Sr.; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Derosier and Eleanor Edith Grover; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery in Charlestown. Janice Ann LaBarre Janice Ann LaBarre, 61, of Manor Drive in Claremont, died January 12, 2005 at the Sullivan County Nursing Home. She was born in Hanover, NH on April 19, 1943 the daughter of Floyd McAdoo and Madeline Eva (Waldo) Douglas and had resided in Claremont for the past five years. She lived in Croydon and worked as a waitress at the New Bridge Restaurant in Lebanon for eleven years. Later while in Alstead, she worked in housekeeping at the Super 8 Motel in Keene and retired in 2000 from the Timber Owners of New England-WCT where she worked as a caretaker and in bookkeeping for fifteen years. She loved playing with her whole family, especially her grandchildren, going to the children's athletic games and her dog, Suzie. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing, video games, cleaning, decorating and crossword puzzles. The surviving family includes, her husband, John James LaBarre, whom she married on April 14, 1973; three daughters, Annette L. Dauphinais and Karen M. Surrell both of Claremont and Stacy Lynn LaBarre of Gilsum; two sons, Kevin L. Pratt of Ludlow, VT and Michael Alan Pratt of E. Alstead; eleven grandchildren, Patrick, Joey, James, Brandon, Kara, Jeffrey, Joshua, Michael Jr., Matt, Mariah and Codie; one great-granddaughter, Emma; one brother, Frederick Douglas; one step-sister, Ruth Douglas and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. John William Geary (see photo - http://www.usgwarchives.net/nh/obits/photos/2005/geary_john_william.jpg) John William Geary, 56, of Park Street in Charlestown, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, after a period of failing health. He was born on July 15, 1948, the son of John F. and M. Hazel (Leonard) Geary. He graduated from Laconia High School in 1966 and from Keene State College in 1971. After teaching one year at Laconia Junior High School, John went on to teach social studies for 30 years at Bellows Falls Middle School. In 1982, John was recognized as "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" for the state of Vermont. He retired in June 2004. During his time at BFMS he coached girls' soccer and track, and was involved in keeping scorebooks for basketball games. John was also instrumental in planning and chaperoning numerous field trips for the students at BFMS, including many trips to New York City, Washington, DC, Boston, Montreal and Florida as well as many trips within NH and VT. As many students recall, together John and his classes scattered various time capsules throughout the Windham-Northeast School District. Although John did not have any children of his own, he was a great mentor to many and a loving caretaker to his cats. John also had a love for the coast of Maine where he spent many summers at Higgins Beach. Despite his deteriorating physical condition, John continued to give of himself to others. He was a native and life long resident of Claremont, NH, born on December 25, 1920 the son of Ernest Eugene and Mary Louise (Eastman) White. He was a very sought after auto body mechanic in the Twin State Valley Region and was the man to find if you wanted the best work done. Mr. White worked in Claremont at Howe Motor's and Dean Hill Motor's. He also worked in White River Junction, VT, Bradford, NH and Concord and retired in 1981 from McNamara Motor's in W. Lebanon. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, gardening, racing and being at Otter Pond. He was a very compassionate and patient man and loved his family especially his grandchildren. The surviving family includes his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth (Fassett) White of Claremont, whom he married on July 29, 1945; three daughters, Janice Pfenning of Claremont, Mary Ellen and her husband, Eugene Kemp, Jr. of Williamstown, MA and Kathy Rae and her husband, David Ford, Sr. of Claremont; a son-in-law, Alfred N. "Skip" Neilsen, of Charlestown; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Owens and Edna Curtis and one brother, Maurice White all of Claremont also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Cheryline Susan Neilsen, who died October 24, 2002 two sisters, Ruth E. Roy on April 22, 2000 and Esther L. Coleman on Jan. 10, 2004 and one brother, Ernest C. Box 660, Lebanon, NH 03766. Elaine D. Pollard Elaine D. Pollard, 77, of Pecor Road in S. Charlestown, died January 14, 2005 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. She was born in Westmoreland, NH on July 20, 1927 the daughter of Walter E. and Doris (Willett) Bowers and had resided in South Charlestown for the past forty-eight years. She enjoyed being around people and having lunch with her best friend of over fifty years, Josephine (Jo) Keefe. She had fun dancing and listening to all kinds of music. She was kind to all that knew her. Mrs. Pollard also cherished and enjoyed her two grandchildren, with whom she spent a lot of time with as they were growing up. She was also an animal lover, especially, Polar, part Lab, part German Shepard dog, who she truly loved and had fun spoiling for the years she had with him as a pet. He was a loving, gentle pet and loved her as well. The surviving family includes her husband, Floyd L. Pollard of S. Charlestown; two sons, Floyd W. Pollard and Mark D. Pollard both of Charlestown; one daughter, Dee Wilk of Claremont; two granddaughters, Stacey L. Wilk of Orford, NH and Shannon D. Wilk-Knapp of San Diego, CA; two brothers, Stanley F. William Herbert Hill William Herbert Hill, 83, a former long time resident of Jackson Street in Claremont, died Thursday morning, January 20, 2005 at the Presidential Oaks Residence in Concord where he lived for the past six years. He was born in Newport, NH on December 25, 1921 the son of William and Grace L. (Senecal-Taylor) Hill and had resided in Claremont most of his life. He was a 1940 graduate of Stevens High School. Mr. Hill retired as an inspector in 1983 from Cone-Blanchard in Windsor, VT where he worked for seventeen years and had previously worked at Fellows Gear Shaper, in Springfield, VT as an inspector and Dartmouth Woolen Mill, in Claremont as a loam fixer. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge both of Claremont. He was the widower of Genevieve Priscilla (Gryckewicz) Hill whom he married on Sept. 4, 1948 and she died Nov. 2, 1998. He was also pre-deceased by one son, Michael A. Hill in 1971 and one brother, Roger Hill in 1989. The surviving family includes one brother, Norman Hill of Cromwell, CT; one sister, Bertha Stacy of Concord, NH and nieces, nephews and cousins. Holt of Putney, VT died Thursday, January 13, 2005 at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor, VT after a period of failing health. He was born on August 5, 1915, the son of Daniel and Helen (Hunt) Holt, in Putney, VT. He attended schools in Brattleboro, VT and Enfield, CT. He married Florence Gardner in Suffield, CT in 1938. He was self-employed in the sales, installation and repair of overhead garage doors for over 40 years. He moved his business from Connecticut to Putney, VT, in 1977. He continued working in the Vermont/Massachusetts area until retiring in 2001, at the age of 86. He loved the out of doors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He particularly enjoyed fly-fishing. He was a member of the Apollo Lodge No. 59, A.F. & A.M. in Suffield, CT, and other national and local organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years in 2004 and a daughter Sally Ann in 1969. He is survived by his children; Eugene D. Holt of Tariffville, CT, and Jane E. Manning of Claremont, NH, his son-in-law, C. Jonathan Manning of Claremont, NH, and two grandsons; Lt. Cdr. Donald C. Manning of Port Hueneme, CA, and Justin E. Manning of Claremont, NH. Richardson, 79, of Jackson Road, Cornish, passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Mt. Ascutney Hospital, of complications from diabetes. He was born in Grantham, NH on December 30, 1925 the son of Bert and Hazel (Ryder) Richardson. He was raised in Groton, VT and resided in Cornish for the past fifty-one years. Before his retirement he was employed as a beater man and night watchman at Coy Paper Mill for fifteen years and had previously worked at the East Ryegate Paper Mill and worked as a self-employed auto mechanic at Ray's Arco Station on Main Street and for a short time at Davis Bros. in Windsor, VT. He also drove the senior bus in Claremont when it first started. Ray was a member of the Cornish Garden Club, and Southern Vermont Old Time Fiddlers. He enjoyed music, played numerous instruments, was an automobile enthusiast, and loved animals, yard sales and collected records. The surviving family includes his wife, Mildred F. (Whitehill) Richardson, of 57 years, whom he married on Sept. 2, 1947; five daughters and their husbands; Juanita and Dennis Ploof of Claremont, Dorothy Flint and the late James Flint of Alabama, Ruth and David L'Heureux of Cornish, Katherine and Daniel Lockwood of Windsor, VT, and Betty and Michael Parker of Conway, NH, as well as 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 2 step grandchildren, and his cat, Chelsea. Three siblings, Harold Richardson, Cedric Newton, and Dot Beers pre-deceased him. She was born in Claremont, NH on August 5, 1920 the daughter of Maxwell L. and Mary Ellen (Smith) Kendall. She lived in Newport most of her life and had resided in Claremont for the past five and a half years. She was a graduate of Towle High School in the Class of 1938. Mrs. Snape retired in 1981 from Encore Shoe Company where she worked as a stitcher for six years and had previously worked for several clothing stores and at Arlington Sample Book Company all in Newport. She was very active in Newport at the United Methodist Church and the Umatilla Ladies Group of the Church, the Senior Center, the Bowling League, the Rebekah’s and the Senior Line Dancing Group. She also did volunteer work at various places. She was the widow of John W. Snape whom she married Sept. 3, 1942 and he died May 2, 1982. The surviving family includes two daughters, Carol King of Okemos, Mich. and Diane Traegde of Claremont; six grandchildren, Laura King, David King and Lisa King, Tanya Murphy, Barry Geer and Kristian Traegde; fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Flint of Sunapee and Pearl Jennison of New London; one brother, Lawrence Kendall of Maine and Florida; also several nieces, nephews and a special friend, Danny Carleton. She was pre-deceased by three sisters, Ruby Burns, Marjorie Kendall and Charlotte Drew. Ouellette, 66, of Durham Avenue, died Saturday morning, January 22, 2005 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Fitchburg, MA on October 9, 1938 the son of Hilaire and Isabella (Ouellette) Ouellette. He attended St. Bernard High School and later attended Worcester Technical School specializing in drafting. Mr. Ouellette lived most of his life in Fitchburg, MA, before moving to W. Swanzey, NH in 1986 and later residing in Claremont since 2002. At the time of his death, Eugene had been employed at Sonnex Industries in Bellows Falls, VT as a design engineer and had previously working at Kingsbury Tool Design in Keene, NH and General Electric in Fitchburg, MA. He enjoyed gardening, reading, assembling jig saw puzzles, dancing and the excitement of traveling within the United States. The surviving family includes his wife, Jacqueline M. William Stanley Szalucka William Stanley Szalucka, 83, formerly of South Brook in Claremont for the past four years and a recent resident of Summer Crest in Newport, died Friday morning, January 21, 2005 at the Valley Regional Hospital. He was born in Claremont, NH on July 31, 1921 the son of Victor and Elizabeth Szalucka. He was a graduate of Stevens High School in the Class of 1938 and a graduate of UNH in the Class of 1942. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He resided in Bridgeport, CT for nearly forty years and worked for Producto Machine Company as a comptroller and retired in 1984. He was an avid golfer having received many awards and trophies and just loved everything connected to the game. Rozwadowski, 88, of Acer Heights (formerly Maple Heights), in Claremont, died Monday afternoon, January 24, 2005 at the Sullivan County Nursing Home, surrounded by his family. He was a native and life long resident of Claremont, born on Nov. 3, 1916 the son of Ignacy and Josephine (Wolska) Rozwadowski. He graduated from Stevens High School in the Class of 1934 and Bentley College in Boston, MA. In 1945. He retired from Joy Manufacturing Company in 1980 where he worked as head accountant and comptroller. He was a life member and the financial secretary of the Polish American Citizens Club for fifty-three years and a life member of the Elk's Lodge and a member of the Claremont Country Club. The surviving family includes his wife, Theresa E. (Granger) Rozwadowski of Claremont whom he married on Nov. 22, 1951; two sons, Charles Rozwadowski of Claremont and Alan Rozwadowski and his wife, Ann of Hooksett, NH and two nephews. David Edward Bugbee David Edward Bugbee, 62, of 243 Broad Street in Claremont, NH, died Monday morning, January 24, 2005 at the Valley Regional Hospital. He was born in Claremont, NH on May 16, 1942 the son of Erwin Church and Ruth Elizabeth (Greene) Bugbee. He resided in Claremont for the past twenty years and previously lived in Poultney, VT. He worked at Holson-Burns Photos on Twistback Road in Claremont as a fork lift operator and warehouse worker. The surviving family includes one daughter, Jessica Bugbee of Claremont; one brother, Robert E. Charlestown, NH, died Tuesday morning, January 25, 2005 at her home. She was born in Milford, CT on Jan. 26, 1938 the daughter of Harold C. and Flora (Mack) Wheeler. She resided in Milford, CT most of he life, attended Milford High School and lived in N. Charlestown since 1985. She retired Dec. 5, 2000 from Whelen Engineering where she worked for twelve years as an electronic engineer and had previously worked for eleven years at the BIC Pen Company in Milford. She was the widow of Eugene W. Jones whom she married on Aug. 30, 1981 and he died Dec. 2, 1989. The surviving family includes long time devoted companion William McLain of Charlestown; two sons, Michael W. Cohen of Agawam, MA and Clinton C. LaPlant of Milford, CT; grandchildren, Stephine Cohen and Dana Cohen Alexander LaPlant, Jacob LaPlant, Amendra LaPlant and Arwen LaPlant; and great-grand-daughter, Nichole Cohen; one sister, Marjorie Oldfield of Wallingford, CT; also nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by one sister, Esther Monsanto and two brothers, Harold C. Wheeler and Leonard A. Wheeler. Keith Clark LaFountain Keith Clark LaFountain, 67, of 243 Broad Street, Claremont, died Wednesday morning, January 26, 2005 at the Veteran Administration Hospital in White River Junction, VT. He was born in Moriah, NY on September 17, 1937 the son of Earl and Ora (Clark) LaFountain and had resided in Newport most of his life. He attended Newport Schools and served in the US Army. Mr. LaFountain worked for ten years at the Joy Foundry in Claremont and then took some correspondence classes in general contracting to become self employed in masonry and carpentry. He owned a furniture store, a Gulf gas station and a taxi business and also had several apartment houses all in Newport. He considered himself a jack of all trades and master of none and enjoyed helping others. The surviving family includes his best friend and loving wife of 36 years, Pearl "Midge" (Raymond) Filiault LaFountain of Claremont whom he married on July 6, 1968; five children, Keith C. "Buddy" LaFountain, Jr. of Enfield, Dennis Filiault of Newport, Gloria Peck of Claremont, Eileen Schafer of Zephyrhills, FL, and Lisa Smith of Vershire, VT; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Gerald LaFountain and Gary LaFountain both of Newport and Douglas LaFountain of Claremont also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by one daughter, Diana P. Simoneau , one special grandson, Guy Boardman and a brother, Earl LaFountain. At his request there will be no visiting hours or services. He also suggested that in lieu of flowers that you do something nice for yourself. A time of fellowship and sharing will be held at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Broad Street, Claremont on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30th from 1 to 4 PM.
