Landmarks in Ancient Dover, New Hampshire by Mary P. Thompson, Durham, N.H. ©1892, Printed by the Republican Press Association, Concord, N.H. LANDMARK: Barne's Island, Bodge's island, Royall's cove NAMES: CHESLEY, J.S.; HILL, Valentine; STEVENSON, THOMAS; BARNES, Capt. Barnes's Island. This is a little island near the eastern shore of Oyster river, not far above the mouth. It now belongs to Mr. J.S. Chesley. It is referred to July 5, 1643, when Valentine Hill had a grant of land extending "from a creek over against Thomas Stevenson's, at Oyster river, that hath an island in the mouth of it, to the head of that creek in Royall's cove," etc. The present name was given it early this century by the boatmen on the river, who left one of their mates, nick-named "Capt. Barnes," on this island, and he was forced to swim ashore. It is sometimes called Bodge's Island. PG 15 - Submitted by C.
