Landmarks in Ancient Dover, New Hampshire by Mary P. Thompson, Durham, N.H. ©1892, Printed by the Republican Press Association, Concord, N.H. LANDMARKS:Burnt Ground NAMES: MEADER, Joseph; CHESLEY, Philip; WILLIE, Thomas; Burnt Ground. Mentioned March 19, 1693-4, when Joseph Meader had a grant of 30 acres of "land and swamp" on the S.W. side of the path to the burnt ground bridge, in Follet's swamp. This is apparently the bridge across Oyster river, below Dishwater mill. Philip Chesley's grant of 30 acres was laid out Jan. 23, 1701, above Thomas Wille's, upon the burnt ground. It was on the north side of the road from Oyster River to Newtown. The name is indicative of an extensive fire in the forest in early times. PG 33 - Submitted by C.
